thanks for the tip on the screening. Great idea.

I've been Sooo waiting for paint that I have been eying the roller and brush sitting in the garage.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Kit and others,

You can fix the screen to the intack with clear rubber silicone. That way you can peel it off if needed with put worring about it. Turn it upside down fit the screen spot the silicone and let dry (mash the screen down into the silicone to get a good grip, use several spots. put the silicone inthe groves if the bars so you won't see it from the top side.

Just found and read through your thread here. Very cool 'burd, and the history makes it even better. Glad to see you are still sticking with the project over the years. I will be with the others waiting to see how it all turns out.

Kit,

IF your going the OEM route, DON'T forget that on the front nose cap there is a approx. 2" wide section around the headlights that gets painted white, no matter what the rest of the colors are. I had to make myself a note to remember this on my two tone.

Where is the white paint ? Mine has original chrome rings as shown below and there wasn't any white paint around the headlights. So I'm a little confused, which isn't out of the ordinary for me anyways...:ito:

i believe he's referring to the area around the grill support and front fenders:

Double check that. That detail may be a Chevrolet only thing, and may not apply to GMC's. Looking good!

OEM4Me.

You are correct, I was mistaken on the white trim. I was reading another thread and they were talking about a true OEM restoration paint job.

THE GMC'S DID NOT HAVE THE WHITE TRIME RING - SORRY :(

No Problem !. Thanks anyways as all information is worth knowing and looking into. :ito:

Today we got the dashboard painted and a lot of prep work around the windshield. Did find some stress cracks around the windshield area that need attention before paint and the new windshield installed.

Piece by piece it get's closer to getting finished.

Well...it is slowly dragging on. Not much done that shows. a little more metal work and decided to fix a cracked hinge are on the rear door before paint. Of course, just as we are ready to paint, the weather turns to crap and work piles up for everybody.:waah:

Hopefully painting the hood tomorrow and the area around the windshield so I can get that reinstalled. The hood really looks nice..can't wait for paint !

Wow the chrome rings look real good. I thought they were painted on mine now I'll have to try and polish them. Here are a few pictures of the dash and headlight rings on my 61. As you can see the dash looks to be a flat charcoal (black with a touch of brown). And, my headlight bezel seem to be painted but may be too far gone to polish, but Ill try anyway. Im learning a lot from your build. Thanks !!!!

What does that knob between the glove box and radio control? I've always wondered why those two holes were stamped into the dash. Your truck is the first stock GMC I've seen with something attached that appears to be original.

Surfdaddy 02-07-2011 01:36 PM

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

The knob on the lower control the radio speakers to the camper. He had another knob on the other side of the radio that controled a fan. He ran a duct from the floor to the camper to allow heat or air from the cab to the camper to try and keep the kid confortable. I'll have to see if I can get some factory pulgs for them since I took the camper off.

markeb01 02-07-2011 02:56 PM

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

If you’re looking to remove the switch and replace the factory plug, I still have the originals from my truck. One was drilled decades ago for an indicator light, but the other is untouched. If you want one or both shoot me a PM with your address and I’ll send them to you as a donation to the project.

Thanks

Bill

Hey Bill, I found a local upholstery shop (SMS auto fabrics) that has in stock not only our headliner material, but the original seat pattern as well. Just thought I'd let you know. It is pricey stuff though, I think the headliner was the cheapest at $49 a rolling yard. Check them out.

Any more progress?

I have a 62 panel with a spotlight in the same exact locations as yours. Was that factory?

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Kinda stalled again. Since it is at a friends house/shop until the paint is done, it sits there. The hood and roof is painted, just need the sides and rear completed. He said around April 1st....why does that date make me nervous...?

Thanks for the lead on the headliner. The seats are really going to put a hit on the wallet.

As far as the spot light....good question...I will call my dad in the morning and ask him if it was installed when purchased, or if he installed it.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I asked my Dad and he said he installed it on the roof after he moved us to Arizona in 1960. Said it was too damn dark in the desert.

:frog: Well it's been a while...long ..long while. Back to work on the beast. :metal: Have the windshield scheduled for installation Thursday morning. Hope to make that deadline.

Decided to finish the grill and head light section tonight. Wife's out of town so the living room is fair game as a quasi-garage. :gi:

I've been waiting too ! Unfortunately, on a scale of 1 to 10 it falls into the priority category of 12. Once I get it back from my friends place I can work on it more.

Between work, time and money, it seems that the 3 haven't matched up. Hopefully it will be finished with paint within the next month. The windshield was supposed to happen last Thursday, but due to an unexpected trip by the painter..the area around the windshield wasn't done and the glass couldn't go in. Now scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday. :waah:

Sometimes...although missed schedules or deadlines tend to be depressing. That beast was supposed to be painted last year... deadlines come..deadlines go... :waah:

Great week ! First granddaughter born Monday morning and work started back on the Burb.

Cut out the section under the driver's door, the last body work. Made the new piece and welded in the new piece.

Slowly coming along. finished the metal work and body work on the rear cargo door. Final prime and sand around the windshield then painted. Same with the inside. Inside doors sanded and light ding removal, ready for interior paint. Need to shoot around windshield and the doors and get the new windshield installed. It's going slow....but it's progress.

ah....You expect to stay on a schedule,. I've been at this phase for going on two years, and 8 before that.

One thing I've learned (LAFCF) Life and family come first.

Your progress is at warp 2, don't complain.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

My schedule wasn't an 8 year plan..but started in 2004 and with several 1-2 year stalls it has been slow. When I see work being done, and another milestone past I get excited, then look at what is left and get overwhelmed.

But, it is getting close to coming home. That is exciting ! Once it is home things will get done faster. Thanks for the verbal support. Anybody want to be a ca$h support ?
