While waiting on my new rocker to show up, I continued with body filler and sanding. Worked on the firewall and inner cab mostly.
Roof is all done. Nice to have that big area wrapped up. Attachment 1881859 This was the cab one year ago. Helps to look back and see the changes to keep motivation up. Attachment 1881860 Finally calling the firewall done! A lot of time spent on the area. Going to get some seam sealer for the firewall channel in the next week or two. Attachment 1881861 Body filler over the inner windshield patch. Will get some glaze on it this week and then call it good. Attachment 1881864 Body filler on the majority of the back of the cab. It really sucks sanding inside the cab. Legs get real sore on the metal floor! Attachment 1881865 |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Dang, lot of filler work man, nice work. What is the glaze?
|
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Thanks! I've been using Evercoat products. The glaze is called Evercoat Metal Glaze. I'm using it over the body filler that was sanded down with 40grit and then sanding the glaze with 80 grit. Next step will be high build... Hopeful to have that done by spring.

Been gettin' after it in the shop lately. Still sanding on the interior of the cab. Had to switch gears though as I need to get some more supplies.
While waiting to get my supplies, the new rocker I ordered came in on Friday. I spent Saturday night and Sunday installing the new rocker. Finished the glaze on the inner windshield patch. Turned out pretty good. Also cleaned up the roof lip and various other little areas. Attachment 1884343 The rocker I ordered was okay quality. I probably could have left it as is and it would have been decent... But going through all that work I wanted the gap to look perfect. So I cut the rocker in half as well as various pie cuts. Attachment 1884344 Once I was happy with the gap, I started welding the top section back on. Attachment 1884345 Pie cuts up front. I'm thinking this is pretty common on most rocker replacements. Attachment 1884348 Welded and started grinding. Will finish cleaning it up this week. Attachment 1884349 |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Well done sir. Looking good! I pie cut mine for sure, all over the place... One thing to remember that I didn't think about until I was done was for the front of the rocker, door gaping, you may want to hang your front fender and make sure the door and fender are good with spacers if you use them.
I hung my doors the way they were from PO and there were no spacers in door or fender. So when I finished both my rockers I noticed that the doors are sunk into the frame pretty far and need spacers to push them out which means my rockers are going to be sunk in depending on how far I space out my doors, and then the fenders will need spacers too probably. I dread the fact I may need to cut up my rockers again... Are you going to spot weld the top inside edge of the rockers to the floor pan or are you just welding the surrounding edges? :chevy: |

I do plan on spot welding the rocker in once I'm complete with the rocker massaging. It's currently just tacked in place. Hopefully I can knock it out tonight! :metal: |

Keeping up on the progress. Spent the week working on the tailgate and rocker. Finally got the rocker fitting pretty solid. Threw the door on for a quick check and then did the plug welds. I'll get the bottom lip when I flip the cab for undercoating.
Welded up the spot weld holes and trim holes on the outer skin of the tailgate. I also got a tailgate handle relocater kit off eBay, so I'll plan on welding the filler patch this next week. This weekend I went and visited my parents and was able to pick up some more supplies for the bodywork. Got home and finished sanding the back inside the cab. Lastly, I started putting some body filler on my inner passenger door skin. Where I welded the patch panel in there was a slight high spot. It looks like with a little body filler I'll be able to blend it in. Plug welds on the Dr rocker. I'll add one more on top and all the bottom lip when I flip cab. Attachment 1885944 Driver door fits nicely. Attachment 1885945 You can see where the high spot is on the pan door where the patch panel was welded in. Attachment 1885946 Back of cab is ready for high-build. Attachment 1885947 Here is my dad's 68 Camaro project he has had for awhile. Was helping him replace the floor pan while I visited him down in Pullman. Attachment 1885948 |

Picture of the outer tailgate skin. Will shoot to get the handle filler patch in this week.
Attachment 1885962 Been flirting around with the idea of either fabricating or purchasing some louvers for my hood. I figure since my cab already has the drip rail mod that it would add to the custom look. Found this Camaro hood picture online. My spare truck I bought came with a hood with a scoop so I figure I could try it on that and if it didn't turn out right I can use my original hood. Based off my initial research it would take a good amount of work and I would have to be cautious welding/cutting in the hood skin. We shall see if it comes to fruition. :chevy: Attachment 1885963 |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
Looking good there Scurry, how long did it take you to prime and filler work the back inner cab?

Worked on fixing my radio cut out. Was more time consuming than I thought it would be. Took awhile to get it to fit snug with the radio. Used a step drill bit for the holes. Turned out fitting pretty good.

Re: 67 SWB First Build
Looks good man, now I think I better get the dimensions of the retrosound radio to make sure my radio fix is correct size before I paint!
I just noticed your ignition hole has 3 tabs cut out, is that factory? Mine doesn't look like that... |

I haven't posted in awhile. Progress has slowed down a lot since I've been working out of town the last month and will be through the summer. I had a few hours this weekend to work on the cab. Finished sanding on the dash. Starting to clean up inside the cab to hopefully get the interior in primer and sound deadening installed. Then I'll flip the cab and get it in primer and an undercoating sprayed.
Hopefully I'll get more updates in the coming weeks. |

Had a couple hours free to work in the shop this weekend. Took advantage of the time and was able to install the tailgate handle relocate patch. Fit was pretty decent. Also started to weld the tailgate back together. Will finish it up another weekend.

Dang tailgate is taking longer than I figured. Had an hour this weekend to cut out the handle relocate. I was hoping that the kit I bought would be a flush mounted patch but turns out it is meant to bolt in. Will possibly try to modify it or at a minimum weld it in instead of using the bolts.
Bow is definitely less noticable than before. Attachment 1920040 Handle relocate cutout. Attachment 1920041 New handle location. Also a few small patches I need to finish welding from needing access with hammer and dolly. Attachment 1920042 Goal is to get this and my floor in some primer by end of summer. I'll hopefully be done working out of town by then and have more shop time :metal: |
Re: 67 SWB First Build
All this work is going to pay off. That tailgate is looking good sir. Interested to see how you deal with the bolt in handle relocate.

Great progress on the Tail-gate.
Thanks for all the pictures. It is looking good. . |

It’s looking good! All that blocking time spent will definitely show when it’s shiny.

Friday night I finished up welding the tailgate holes. Spent Saturday morning getting everything prepped and then spraying primer for the tailgate and cab floor. Had to spend a little time with the DA getting rid of some surface rust.
Tailgate prepped for primer. Attachment 1925806 Floor in primer. Will eventually get a sound deadener installed. Next is to flip the cab. Attachment 1925807 Tailgate in primer. Pretty sure I'm going to bolt the handle relocate in. Attachment 1925808 Misc. Items Attachment 1925809 Starting slinging mud on the tailgate. Fingers crossed all that effort will show at the end. Attachment 1925810 Ran out of time to make a lot of progress. Hopeful to hit it hard the next couple of weekends. |

Not a lot of progress. Finally moved back home after an out of town job for work all summer. It's been a busy week back getting caught up on things a neglected around the house. Managed to squeeze an hour in the shop here and there. Finished with the body filler and now onto the skim coat and 80grit.
Still can't believe I have been working on the dang tailgate for over 6 months :smoke: |

Ouch, I feel like a selfish jackwagon lol. Well maybe not that bad. My wife is dealing with a lot right now. She will be getting a vacation when I finish my truck to say the least ;). That tailgate is gonna be sweet when you finish scurry. Can't wait to see it done!

I decided it was time to switch gears. The tailgate still needs some work. It's far from perfect, but hopefully it'll do the job.
Set the tailgate aside and started mudding my driver door. I got it roughed in for the time being. I won't finish it up until I hang the doors again. Last weekend I had some buddies over and took advantage of it. I had them help me flip the cab onto the firewall. From there I started cleaning up the bottom of the cab. I had some random pin holes to fill from when I was doing floor patches. Also removed some old seam sealer where the floor pan overlaps the firewall. New seam sealer went in right behind it after it was cleaned up. Welded up driver rocker/cab corner as well. The previous cab owner welded up the bench seat frame holes and had used a different seat. I plan on using a bench seat from a 68, so I was able to remove the welds and run a thread cutter through the bracket nuts to get it cleaned up and functional again. Lastly, I put a couple coats of epoxy primer on it. I realize it's not perfect and my welded seams standout. I figure it won't matter too much because it'll never really be looked at. I'll throw some undercoating on later this weekend or early next week before I get the cab flipped back over. That should help mask the weld seams. Ah man, no lizard skin?? I'm just kidding, looks great. How did that sem brand undercoating do?
|
Re: 67 SWB First Build
A+ great work.
Does that undercoat mask the welds like you wanted? I want to know. Because the floor pan I purchased re-stamped need a little cover up or reweld. Your floor-pan work looks Good. . |

Was able to spend a little time in the shop this weekend. My brother and I did some brewing in Friday. Afterwards he helped me flip my cab back.
Spent yesterday night hanging the doors and slinging some mud. I'm liking the looks of the gaps so far. Will hopefully finish the last of the glaze on the doors and cab by the end of the week. Attachment 1944285 Attachment 1944286 Attachment 1944287 Attachment 1944288 Attachment 1944289 |
