Re: 1966 C-10 build
Hi kdad, just caught your build. You’re making great, fast progress and it looks incredible. If you ever get anything from CPP, I live in Placentia and know they can be tough to handle. I’m literally a mile from them. I wouldn’t mind, for anyone on the forums, just reach out via PM and I can drop in on them. Just let me know what you need! Don’t mind making shipping packages to save on gouging prices to send a few items...or banging heads to get correct parts to you. Just let me know. At 6’4” and 250, I usually get what I need. LOL!
Now, I just need to remove the cover off my 64 and get moving. It’s been sitting for 3 years with life getting in the way...but still collecting all the parts needed, including some great upgrade plates, both PS and Brake Booster adapters from CaptianFab and rideblue00 tach mount along with couple trips to pull your part yards. With life issues mostly clear except the ever present honey-do list, I’ve been motivated by your posts and will get up and get moving...the honey do list can sit for a while. I also just ordered the blaster attachment you posted, getting here Saturday! Keep it up, it a great thread. Tony |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
Thanks Tony I will keep that in mind. You just cant go wrong with the Captains brackets for sure. Not sure if you have a build thread or not but would love to follow along.

Re: 1966 C-10 build
I just read through from the beginning. I like what you are doing here. Good work!

Re: 1966 C-10 build
Just finished reading this tread today. Good work thus far.
BTW 8 tracks are cool even though most people my age don't know what they are. LOL |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
Been fairly busy over here with sheetmetal replacement. When I started this transformation I wasn't really thinking of getting too detailed with the metal work. I did want to repair and replace anything with rust in it. That meant the floors on both sides from front to rear and the rockers on both sides. Of course once I dug into it I found the cab support on the passenger rear side was toast as was the right side cab corner... UGGHH!
I also knew that I would patch all of the holes the PO used to put various sizes and styles of mirrors on this truck. Sounds easy... Well it sounded easy. A few pics for the fun of it. started to put pics here but they were giant size |

Re: 1966 C-10 build
So the thought is to leave the exterior with its patina (rust holes in doors and faded out silver paint with sun bleached spots) paint the upper cab white and the stripe inside the trims.
On the interior I went with as much new or rebuilt as possible to give the wife her comfort all the while maintaining that "Ol skool" look.. hence the name of the truck... "Ol Skool" passenger door coming along nicely https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pszvopsym7.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psuzgbs5su.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...ps4bba5blr.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psvqkv2q4o.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psnhhbdsfr.jpg Dam kick panels needed replaced.. https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psqzavdrtt.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psazfzd76y.jpg Here was a nice puzzle https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...ps4av63hry.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psjl7abwj5.jpg |

I used self drilling screws to hold the panels while I test fit and got ready to weld

Re: 1966 C-10 build
The wife walks in and says wow you got allot done...
Im feeling all proud and looking ;like a king basking in the light of my own brilliance... Then she says.... "hey I thought you were gonna put that fuel tank in the back" I'm thinking … Really? So she goes on a tangent about how since its all torn down that I might as well just take the tank out and mount a new one in the rear. I mean how hard could it be she says?????? I am thinking the whole time doesn't she have a nail appointment or a trip to the salon to get to? So I end up taking the tank out and thus we have another hole to weld up. https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pswkamfq9b.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psepyz3mvm.jpg Poor old tank https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psrcvdlnft.jpg I got my way when I insisted we go to an OG mirror painted to match all the white on the cab. https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psrsol3zyn.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psrshskvhj.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pswzx9kpcf.jpg Gotta get back to it the Boss (Wifee) wants this thing running asap with no excuses from me... I still love my truck and the dog.. always love that dog.. the wife I'm just tolerating at this point. She adds any more items to my list and we are gonna have issues.. LOL |

Slowly but surely...I am trying my hand at the welding part....its a SLOW SLOW Process with a BIG learning curve..... Famous last words....How hard could it be...LOL |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
Thanks John, You keep at it and the welding will come with practice. I tell everyone to go down to the local city college and take a course. It will shave years off the learning curve..

Gas tank installed and plumbed.
Funny thing is the truck ran ok with the old tank and line as it was. I dropped this one in and ran a new line (3/8 braided stainless) start the truck up and it runs better?????? Must have had some blockage in the old line. https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psg07uctk8.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pskgndtri9.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pselmn9r1c.jpg Sorry the truck is so dusty but somebody has been cutting sanding welding and grinding around here.. https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...psfoslilmk.jpg https://oi175.photobucket.com/albums...pseunwwwuu.jpg |

I am by far no welder but am gonna give it a good try....bought a 3 in 1 welder Mig, Tig and Stick...welds up to 1/4 so I figure itll be good for what I am doing. |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
John, I know the combo rigs will weld plenty good. It some times takes a bit more messing around with them to get em right. I have dedicated Mig, Tig, Oxy/Acet. Arc welders that I have been using for years so its a little easier with individuals that I can set up for each to do a specific task. For example I have my arc welder set up to do heavy welding 3/16 and above. The mig has been set for 16 to 18 gauge sheetmetal the Oxy/ Acet rig is set up for two tasks. cutting and heating. The Tig is set to do anything up to 1/4"
The carpet is actually a great product. At first I was looking at it as just being a piece to cover the floor but the stuff is really nice and the fit is near perfect. Plus the boss loves the color and the texture. Gotta get back out there and finish the sound proofing material install. Link to where the carpet comes from below. https://www.stockinteriors.com/AutoC...374&ModelId=88. |

Re: 1966 C-10 build
Scott I appreciate the info.....You are probably correct about buying direct but I do know some employees that work for them so I may be able to go that route...Im more interested in seeing the product at this point so that I can ensure the color. Just kinda stinks that shipping is 47.00 for a 20 min ride.
ACC went through a change a few years back when a lot of their management was killed in a plane crash. They seem to be a great company. Itll be awhile before I get carpet....Still doing the body work so sand sand sand is my motto right now and of course lots of reading on painting. Im still in the process of getting the initial body work done....Once that is done Ill put it all back together and do panel matching and get the gaps as best I can.....day by day. Still have a few places to fix some interior cab metal but waiting on the welder to arrive. |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
So heres a real quick one.. Fuel gauge nightmare:
So I have a new tank new sending unit and new wiring. The fuel tank has a couple gallons in it... the gauge reads full?? I am like WTF. So of course I screwed something up right? I spend a couple hours last night and most of this morning taking everything apart making jumper wires, checking grounds, making sure everything is good and still when I turn on the key it goes straight to full... I take the sending unit out and am standing at the back of the truck messing with it when I look through the back window and its working again... I am like WTH now? https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psx6vrllnw.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pspzbmqm27.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6mywu0v9.jpg They put a stop for the arm to fall on when the tank is near empty and yes of course it grounds out and shows full tank..... Dam rocket science I tell you.. needless to say that stop has now been conveniently tweeked out of the way and the arm bent just slightly to keep it from grounding out and now the gauge works perfectly... LOL glad I pulled the wiring harness out and double checked every wire from the starter to the tail lights... |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
So I have been reading all of the horror stories here about the weatherstrip gaskets around the doors and honestly have been concerned that I will end up with a truck you have to slam the doors to close them. Last project car I did was a 1963 Karmann Ghia and yes you have to slam the doors. Sucks but they just don't make many options for that car. Anyway I figured I would try the cheap weatherstrip pieces at Classic parts $25 a pair was pretty reasonable. If they don't work well then I can go the import route and spend the extra cash on those as they get good reviews. I put in the as I like to call them "El Cheapos" Adjusted the striker and to my surprise they fit great. The door does not fall shut by itself but I also do not need to slam the door. And they even seal the door.. Thinking I must have gotten lucky or done something wrong.. LOL. Oh well the seals worked out great and now I am finishing off the carpet with new mats and kick panels to match the "El Cheapo" carpet.
Keep thinking I was going to keep this build simple. https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pslvzkx8t9.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psygzx4zep.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psxkccfxtt.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psllrhkjfl.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psk3a6fbtz.jpg |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
Broke down and bought the bed wood. Went to classic parts again due to the low price as well as shipping costs.
Also got a few pieces of the door trims that were missing when I bought the truck. I open the box the wood was shipped in and sitting on top with no protection is the new door trims.. OUCH! All dented and dinged up from the handling of the packages. https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pswgmcbar3.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...psz52und2v.jpg Dents you can see through the package.. Opened them up and they were even worse.. The wood had the same matching dents.. LOL https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pskodk0agw.jpg Now I know I opted to purchase the lower grade wood knowing this truck will get a bed that is used on the daily and could end up with motorcycles, bikes and maybe even a motor or transmission back there. https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pskodk0agw.jpg https://i175.photobucket.com/albums/...pstq1ghepp.jpg So here is the good news.. I called Classic parts and with no hesitation they apologized and said no worry we will get the new parts out to you immediately.. Looks like the tracking number says delivery scheduled for tomorrow... All in all the rest of the bed wood looks great so we shall see. |
Re: 1966 C-10 build
I haven't been here in a while...You have done a lot Scott! Everything looks great!
I just can't decide whether to put carpet in or the repop of the rubber floor mat...hmmm |

Re: 1966 C-10 build
Scott the carpet looks really good. I got some samples from the link you sent me and they look really good as well. I got 4 samples from black to silver...now to decide..lol.
Classic Parts does a really good job about replacing things..I had a couple of things I ordered that were toast when I got them...called and just like you they sent replacements out quickly. As far as the door weatherstripping I purchased mine from Precision https://www.prp.com/product/detail/352505 these are the push on type which I like. I tried it on the passenger side and they worked pretty good....a lil snug but not real tight...may be an option for you if you don't like the ones you got. BTW what are you doing for speakers? |
