Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

As I am waiting for some parts to get back on the rewiring, I modified the modified wipers

As I said, I took the bearings out the skateboardwheels, made new wiperrods and put them back in.
Sounds fast, but it was 5 hours of work to get it properly working.
It works great, only now I want the wipermotor mounted in rubbers...

This is the first modification, also worked, but the bearings were bronze and way gone.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2...o/P1250675.JPG

Took it apart, you can see the skateboard bearings that I used.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A...o/P1250676.JPG

Plan is to weld the bearing on a newly made rod:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/P1250677.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-i...o/P1250678.JPG

Leftside was easy, a little bent here and there.
The rightside had to be fabricated:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...o/P1250679.JPG

This piece is mounted on the wipermotor, it's in testmode ;)
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/P1250688.JPG

This is the leftside, ready and mounted:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...o/P1250689.JPG

The rightside ready and mounted:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/P1250690.JPG

And the wipermotor:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250693.JPG

I never had such great working wipers on a classic car :metal:

When I had the wipers off, I cleaned out the cowlvent and took Mr Taz off, who was sitting there for several years I think...
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v...o/P1250680.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-a...o/P1250681.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-k...o/P1250684.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/P1250686.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-z...o/P1250687.JPG

I think it looks pretty solid in there. Only at passengersside at the lower hinge is rust that I have to weld. The rest I will see when the front comes off.

I also bought a little present for the truck ;)

Nice mods.
Very cool tach.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

You are lucky, very little rust in the cowl. I have a tach just like that clamped on the steering column of my truck!

RockinKees 11-06-2014 05:06 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Kim and Gary!

Have to make a clamp for the tach, it doesn't have one right now...

Still waiting for electrical parts, but I have done something today.
Almost the complete wiring is in, except for the light switch and the dash has to be done.
The original lightswitch is broke, or at least I don't get taillights out of it?
I managed to get the switch in little parts, to see if it can be repaired, but to tell the truth, there are no parts in it that really can be broke :hc:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l...o/P1250672.JPG

I cleaned the thing and put it back together, but at no effort.
This evening I get a "modern" switch, a new one for a Chevy Van, nice side issue is that now the front parking lights stay on with the headlights, I wanted that. Tommorow I shaal build it in and then it shoeld all be working, I hope ;)

New wires, all with plugs.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0...o/P1250673.JPG

My notes.... When all is working, I gonna make a nice diagram of what I did and keep a copy in the truck.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-R...o/P1250674.JPG

Busy getting wires in

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t...o/P1250697.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250698.JPG

Almost ready, does it look good to you?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6...o/P1250699.JPG

All wires are marked behind the fusebox, so I know which is what.

The rest of the parts is also coming together: Tiltsteering column of a '77 Chevy Van with columnshift, GM steering pump with hoses and brackets, speedocable, steel (2 x 3")for the Jag IRS to make a new subframe, steel plates to box parts of the framerails. And I ordered new brakes for the front and rear Jag axles.
Haven't been sitting still :metal:

Thanks Kim!

Almost everything works now.
Dimmerswitch only gives lowbeam and I have no brakelights yet.
Dive into this monday.

For now weekend!! :four::tim::five:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

So, for the happy viewers, I've got all electrics going :metal:

All lights work, even highbeam and brakelights!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/P1250703.JPG

The heatercore was leaking, at least I think it does....
I took it out of the truck, the core looks like it doesn't leak, if I close one end and blow through the other, it doesn't leak any air.
But normally the system is under pressure, so I have it leaktested, to be sure.
Also the PO had used normal gardenhose for the heatercore, don't think it was his best set....

Did a bit of tuning on the engine, cleaned the enginebay a little bit for now bolted on the aircleaner on that came with the car, so that's ready for inspection.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...o/P1250704.JPG

I am ready to take it to inspection, but unfortunatly have to wait until December 2.
Now I can do the little things that are not neccesary for inspection, but have to be done, such as the heater (we need one in the Netherlands!), blower hoses that are broken, thinking about colors on the outside....
I have no idea what color I'm gonna use.
I lean towards semi gloss black with high gloss red.
But then again, there are more TF trucks with that color...
Maybe only sanding and look what comes through...

I want a 50's Hot Rod / Rat Rod look on the truck so if you guys and girls have any tips??

You made quick work of it Dutch, I'd give you a passing grade.

What was the original color or did I miss it.
I'm kind of partial to the tan and cream color scheme on the fleet sides.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thank you 1958Warrior, for the passing grade ;)
If the nice inspection men did the same.....

That's a very beautifull Fleetside. I had a Chevy Van in Brown with Tan, so now it's up for an other color. I think it was originally white.
There are some scratches on the outside that shows white (and gold), on the inside all is white.

My old 1981 Chevy Van:

I had to sell it because of the tax rules here in Holland, couldn't pay for it anymore.
Had great fun with it. Sold it to a German guy, who I still have contact with. He sent me pictures once in a while of what he did to it. Very nice to know that this Van has gone to a great home!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Cool van, I used to have a 79 that looked almost the same. Too bad you had to sell it, did they change the taxes?

RockinKees 11-11-2014 03:44 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes, they changed the taxes a lot!
We have a European Classic Car rule that says 30 years is an Old Timer or Classic Car. In Holland was it 25 years old, then you don't had to pay roadtax anymore, because of the few miles those cars drove. The Netherlands "suddenly" came short on money and picked the oldtimers to pay...They say because of environment reasons, yeah right.
In the Netherlands are about 350.000 Classics at 7 or 8 miljon cars....
The rules changed into 40 years old ( remember, European rules are 30 years!!). When your car is 40 years or older, you don't have to pay the roadtax. Between 30 and 40 years, is something completely different. If you drive on normal gas you pay €120,- (around $150 these days) a year and for three months you may not drive the car (Dec, Jan and Feb). If you have a Diesel or LPG you pay the whole lot on roadtax, like it is a "normal" car. I drove LPG with the Van (32 years old), so I had to pay €244 a month!! That's about $ 304 a month!! From nothing to this....Even I can't effort that amount!!
Luckily there is a foundation who fights this new law, hope they manage to get this law reversed.. Time will tell.

But now something completely different.
As American Classics are not common at our streets, we are always happy to see this in the wild:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Z...o/IMG_2314.JPG

It is very nice restored Apache, you don't see them much in Holland!

RockinKees, I'm working my way through your thread, I really like your way of working through all your issues.

One example being the wiper motor fix, two thumbs up. Jim

Thanks Jim!!
I really appreciate that!

We don't have parts lying around in Holland for this kind of cars, so you have to be inventive sometimes ;)

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Closed the dash today.
All wiring has been done, all works good now.
The PO had the fuelgauge mounted in the dash, he has cut a hole in it.
Why I don't know, the original fuelgauge is working as it should.
So I welded it, I have a few weeks before inspection ;)

Sorry for the crappy pics, made with my cellpone...

This is the fuelgauge hole:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/IMG_2317.JPG

Too bad, 'cause the rest is in pretty good shape, except for the screwholes he put in for that nice red interiour he put in..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v...o/IMG_2318.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...o/IMG_2319.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_...o/IMG_2320.JPG

Question:
What should be in the middle hole above the radio delete plate?
I tried to get an old sigaretlighter in there, but the lighter I have is too long unfortunatly. The wiperarms just touch the +side of the lighter, I don't take that risk.
Thats why I put it at the leftside of the radio plate.

I don't want to cut the dash up, it must stay like this.
Now I'm thinking where to put the radio, I've thought I make a strip under the dash, from left to right, mount there the radio, extra gauges and the switch for petrol/LPG, integrate the steeringcolumn in it also.
If you have tips and/or pictures you can show me, please do!

Final finish again when I start the fun works, after I get my title :chevy:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks for explaining the tax rules for the old cars, I'm always interested in the way other countries treat antique car drivers. I think we have it pretty good here in the US, it is much cheaper. That's why I have a lot of admiration for anyone who wants to have this hobby in another country. I don't understand how the government thinks more taxes will help, when all you could do was sell your van to someone in another country, and now they collect no taxes on the vehicle!

RockinKees 11-13-2014 04:22 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Kim and OrrieG!!

Gary, it's not only that a bunch of us couldn't effort the classic cars they like, but also the government brings down a whole industrial branch!!
I think the half of parts suppliers for Classic is gone broke by the new rules.
BIG mistake!! Hope they learn from it.

Oh, you also see it on the meetings we have here, much less American cars from the 70's and 80's, there goes the historical inheritage....

Have fun and take some pics!

RockinKees 11-17-2014 12:38 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Meeting was fun!
Only the pics I took are too dark, so it's difficult to see the nice things.

Tried to get a speedocable, didn't get it
So, I made my own from the original and a Chevy Van cable. Hope it works...

I only got the outer cable of the truck and a complete one from the Van.
You can turn the white drive square of off the cable, thus you can make the innercable at the right length.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-M...o/P1250803.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...o/P1250805.JPG

Plan was to grind the nut or swivel of off the original cable and connect it to the one from the Van. I connect the two to push a 8mm rubber hose over the two parts and set them with hose clamps.
I did it so that I could slide the original nut to the desired length of the inner cable. Not too tight or too loose.
Next to the truck it works okay ;)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/P1250806.JPG

So it looks like this:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U...o/P1250809.JPG

Screwed into the speedometer:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-a...o/P1250811.JPG

The speedometer was turning a bit heavy, so I used WD40 to get it loose.
Don't know if it can hurt the speedo, but it went into the drive unit where the cable connects...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/P1250807.JPG

Did not test it yet, we will see if it works.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Question for you all:

I'm going to run 15 inch steelies, front are 6 inch wide, rear are 7 inch wide.
What is the most common tiresize you would use?

I was thinking, front 205/70-15 and rear 235/70-15.
Does that make sense?

RockinKees 11-19-2014 02:21 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Today at home working on the heaterbox.
The heater core seems to leak, pipes are not what they used to be, so decided to buy a new one, only this one is from a European car. If it can heat up a four door sedan, then it can heat up a small pick up too

That's why I had to change the heater box to get the core fit into it.
Also the connection of the hoses of the blower are somewhat crispy...

From this pile of parts I have to make a working heater again:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250812.JPG

I first welded a small piece of the box together, so that the mounting bolts for the heater stay at same place. The I grinded the box loose from the mounting bolt
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/P1250814.JPG

Next I drilled the underside of the box loose and made steel plates to make the box longer
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_...o/P1250815.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/P1250816.JPG

One side of the new heater core is held by two aluminium pieces that I riveted inside the box

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i...o/P1250817.JPG

The other side is bolted to an aluminium angle piece, that bolts into the original holes of the box

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/P1250819.JPG

Of course I ran out of weldinggas, so I finish this tommorow.

To get the window defrost hoses connected again to the box I used PVC pipe, that we normally use for plumbing in the kitchen, bathroom etc.
I took two end stops and drilled and turned the nuts on the lathe to get a hole for the much needed air:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E...o/P1250820.JPG

To get the hoses connected I had to make a new, metal plate for the box, the old plastic one is broke into many pieces...and I don't know how it originally looked like, so I must engineer something, that I think will work ;)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n...o/P1250821.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-s...o/P1250822.JPG

After filing the two holes from 30mm to 40mm, the PVC end stops finally fitted into the plate.
Time to stop here, because my body hurt so much I can't do no more.
Hope it's get better in the morning so we can build further with a new, fresh sense :mm:
I will take the whole bunch to the truck tommorow and will make it all fit and working.

To be continued....

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

After a short brake I went full on it again :metal:

A bit of Japanese Metal Origami and you have a working heater again.
The PVC pieces are fitting like a glove!!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/P1250826.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250827.JPG

After test fitting I sprayed the heater black, don't know what to do with it yet.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p...o/P1250829.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-w...o/P1250831.JPG

To bolt the heater into the truck I had made a template, because the heaterpipes are in a different place:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F...o/P1250832.JPG

As you all know: measure twice drill once...it works ;)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/P1250833.JPG

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-q...o/P1250834.JPG

When I went to a friends place to get his '46 Chevy dash that has to be pinstriped, I said I wanted a "new" old bench and get rid of that pimpseat that I have now...My friends buddy said "I have one for you, a 1955 original, take it, don't use it anymore!"
Well, you understand, I am as happy as a little kid!!

Pimpseat finally out!!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-U...o/P1250835.JPG

Original '55 benchseat in!!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/P1250836.JPG

Much better!!
Maybe a new seatcover in the future, but for now, it's just right ;)
And that happend in Holland, just 14 miles away from my house...miracles happen!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Today I had a little fine tune on the engine, set the timing right, tried to tune the carb, but I need a digital tachometer to do it right.
But then again, I'm going with LPG instead of petrol, so then I will be doing it again....
It's running fine now, hope it stays that way to the inspection next week :uhmk:

Before you forget. I'm working on this thing :lol:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/P1250837.JPG

At home I started with the Jag hubs, machined them down to take a Chevy rim. The center hole of a Chevy is 2,4 mm smaller then the one from the Jag.

I set the hub in the lathe and fixed it, I had 0,1 mm swinging at last. Couldn't get it better.
Thats fine by me ;)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6...o/P1250838.JPG

Finished it looks like this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V...o/P1250839.JPG

That's all :waah:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7...o/P1250840.JPG

Tomorrow we go testdrive the truck, check the steering, brakes, e-brakes and what else we come along.
Then it's waiting for the inspection.....fingers crossed....you'll never know how they look at old cars ;)

The tire sizes you mentioned should work fine, but I think a 7 inch wheel is a little narrow on the back. I have 15x8 wheels and 235/70-15 all around on my 55, and think it looks good.

RockinKees 11-24-2014 06:22 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I now have 6-lug 8 inch in the back with 255/60-15.
I think that's too wide for a Jag IRS setup.
It just fits right now...

If it's too narrow, I always can widen the rims later, but now I have to work with the ones I have. That's why the question...

oldman3 11-24-2014 08:03 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Kees, if I read that correct, then the Jag has the same bolt pattern as Chevy, except center section in different?...Jim

RockinKees 11-25-2014 03:59 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes Jim, that's correct.

Jag has the small Chevy bolt pattern, 5 x 4,75.
Only the Jag center is 74mm, my Chevy rims are 71mm, so I machined them down with 3mm.
All fits good now ;)
