Re: Barn raising
Had a little bit of time to waste the other day so I finally got to finish off the trailing arms the way I wanted to. Went and got some solid aluminum round stock and made myself some billet trailing arm ends and polished them up, and installed a set screw to hold them all in place. I am happy with the results and I think it finishes off the arm nicely. I will eventually clear coat them but for now I just put some sealer on them.

Re: Barn raising
looks killer, what did you use for a "sealer"

Re: Barn raising
The guy who polished my grill sugested Master Formula. I got it at the San Diego County Fair last year, it seems to work ok, haven't used it too much though.

Re: Barn raising
Several reasons why I did not go with Hooker; The hooker pipes are 4" dia. and with them hanging low on the side I did not want to add any more clearance issues. The Patriot side pipes are 3.5" an would give a bit more clearance given that it is a long wheel base and going into driveways and parking lot I did not want to high center. Since this is a daily driver it was more of an issue than if it was a weekend toy. Second is the price, Patriot was quite a bit less than the hooker pipes. From what I could tell there was not much difference between the two other than the Hooker glass pack could be removed and replaced when the glass was blown out or for racing. The Patriot pipes have a single tack weld holding the glass pack in place so if I needed to remove the muffler I could with out much trouble. Third was the length, maybe they do sell them longer but the longest I found the Hooker product in 65" length and I needed 73" and Patriot had them that long. SWB trucks might have an easier time with the shorter length pipes.

Re: Barn raising
Fenders? or frame? I am using the original ram horn headers that came with the truck and they work great. They were routed at a 90* bend directly behind the rise in the forward frame rail, about right in line where you see them disappear under the truck. I did not come out from the headers in the wheel well area, the way it works out the side pipes miss the fender and wheel well altogether. It was definitely a custom fit up and not just bolt on item.
I am still trying to get a good sounding video of the truck, just dragging my feet I guess. |
Re: Barn raising
well my big concern is if the hooker headers will go low enought to clear the fender but not too low.... I called hooker and they don't even have dimensions

Re: Barn raising
I guess I am not surprised, try Doug Thorley they seem to know more about the product they sell from my experience.

Re: Barn raising
ok will do!!! thanks again and I love your truck

Re: Barn raising
wow just checked out your build thread , we have to get together some time

Re: Barn raising
Awesome truck man. I love the lowering kit and all the custom work u did i wish i could do all of that. U should paint the chevrolet in the grille black and around the headlights or have someone photoshop it to see what it would look like.

Re: Barn raising
Garth,
I would love to get some of the San Diego members together. Seems like the So Cal chapter is mostly up in L.A. area. I am going to start going to the La Mesa and El Cajon street meets when they start up again. I know that spots can be reserved for clubs to come and park, and it would be cool to have a whole line of trucks on display. Long Horn, Yeah, that is on my list to get done, but I just cannot seem to find the time and I have a bunch of other projects in line in front of it. |
Re: Barn raising
Hey I almost forgot, after about 8 month battle with the DMV they finally said uncle and issued the YOM plates that I restored. Had them on the truck that day. Now I just need to build a rear bumper to hang it on, The rear window placement is getting old. Pics tommorrow.

Re: Barn raising
Got a little more done on the truck today, I am in the middle of fabricating a spoiler for the tailgate. My plan is to have a spray in bed liner and a roll up bed cover so the spoiler should transition nicely. Sorry I don't have great pics because it has been raining in So Cal this weekend. to finish it I will have it powder coated satin black.

Re: Barn raising
When I read spoiler, I thought, please no big wing. This should look alright though.
|
Re: Barn raising
very cool idea. how are you going to paint it to match?
|
Re: Barn raising
Ha Ha my wife said the same thing when I told her I was going to build a spoiler. This should be very modest and classy addition, Once the bed liner and roll top cover are installed it should look even better. I figure if I am going to have a NASCAR inspired shop truck it would need a spoiler.
I finished welding the end caps on but the rain got too bad to pull it out and take a picture. I will be bolting it on with four S.S. button head screws. Two inside and two outside. The finish will be black satin powder coat. |
Re: Barn raising
i like it
|
Re: Barn raising
You could paint it black then go over it with a gray and use a heat gun to give it the aged effect . Or something like that

Love those tires hope to see more, not a Nascar fan myself but those tires just look classy

Re: Barn raising
hey whats up with the truck man hate to see this die
|
Re: Barn raising
Been pretty busy lately. but I did get the spoiler back from powder coat and promptly twisted off a S.S. button head sheet metal screw in the mounting hole. Had to take it off to see how I am going to extract the remnant w/o damaging the tailgate.
Also I prefit a F350 bench seat that I had bought last week. This seat is the same width on the bracket and only needs minimal mods to get it to fit our trucks. Going to have it re upholstered to match the original bench seat stitch pattern. I am going to change the color to black and the carpet also. |
Re: Barn raising
I always figured it would have racing buckets and huge belts that say simpson or something. And window nets...
|
Re: Barn raising
I have one daughter and one wife, So I can take my whole family, including my two yellow labs in the bed, on a cruise if I have a bench. I thought about getting a modern split bench seat with all the adjustments that come with it but I really wanted to maintain the vintage look.

Re: Barn raising
Your truck looks sweet! I've been pondering doing something like this with mine but I have to paint the whole thing first. Gonna try the "fake" patina on it since I just can't handle the mental stress of having a nice paint job:crazy:
Just my opinion, leave it long. Too nice of a truck to hack down. |
Re: Barn raising
Mike
I just found and read thru you whole build. The tire idea is really cool and I like your spoiler idea. Looks similar to something I was thinking of for my '98 before I sold it. Is your 9" out of a Lincoln Mark V? The brakes look similar to mine. I was looking at how the caliper mounts to the bracket. It has been so long since mine was together I forgot how they go back together. Looks like I guessed right, I have the spring steel and retainer on the side end of the caliper as you do. The only difference is that my bracket puts the retainer to the top instead of the bottom. I will need to go check mine to see if I have the brackets flipped side to side. Do you know if they are marked as to what side they go on? |
Re: Barn raising
Mine is a 77 Mark V, the brackets for the e brake are from an 80's Mark VII. The bracket geometry is reversed so that the cable can pull in the direction I wanted. The brackets are not interchangeable left to right so you cannot get them backwards because they do not fit on the wrong caliper as well as they fit on the correct one.

Re: Barn raising
Love the spoiler! Very nice, not too drastic. I want one!! I'm a huge Nascar fan and love the ideas!

Re: Barn raising
Finally got around to snapping some photos of the finished spoiler. I finished it with a S.S. molding so it matches the rest of the trim but also protects the edge from getting dinged.
http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/o...DSC_0026-1.jpg http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/o...k/DSC_0029.jpg http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/o...k/DSC_0028.jpg I also found a '95 F350 seat that fits in our trucks with some minor reshaping of the front bracket. Had it recovered and made sure it was stitched in the 60's style white thread with parallel seams. I loved the old seat and there was only minor tears in the vinyl but being a low back the rear window is the first thing my head would hit in a crash. My wife convinced me that the turquoise is a better color for the vinyl rather than black. http://i361.photobucket.com/albums/o...DSC_0024-1.jpg |
Re: Barn raising
That spoiler turned out waaaayyy better than I thought it would nice work.
|
Re: Barn raising
I'm running a mid 90's ford seat in my step also, I was quite suprised how well it fit. and its alot more comfy than the origanal bench. I like the spoiler idea, it looks sharp. Did you think about putting some peices molded into the rear bed corners kinda like a 3 piece spoiler. just a thought.
|
Re: Barn raising
Thought about it but I wanted to keep it simple and not drill into the fleetsides.
On my seat I did notice that the Fords have an arm rest on the door that runs the entire length of the door and the back of the bench is narrower than the original Chevy but the bottom is just about the same. I had the upholstery guy add 2" of foam on each side to fill in the gap worked out great. |

Lookin good mike!
