Thats sweet looking. I have my stock springs if you want I'll send them to you. I put jeep ones on mine. Let me know and I'll make sure I still have them.;)Chrome in the Dome was lame. No bags, no frame dragers. Only one 63 and a couple 51's.

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

Dave ,I have the stock springs from the 71 Long bed that donated the front crossmember. I thought I would put those on and see what it looks like, then order some lowered springs if I need them . Thanks for the offer!!! How are the jeep springs working out for you?

daverod 03-21-2010 12:03 AM

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

I like the jeep ones. I think the ones I have are off somthing else anyway. I was counting the coils and they look different then yours. They might be off a 71 sub.:waah: Jeep springs are soft if your going to use your truck to haul heavy stuff it might bottom. I think you need the spring with a pig tail on both ends? You could put bag on the back for cheaper then springs. I got two bags for $109.I see LMC wants170 for springs

bubba327 03-21-2010 12:18 AM

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

Dave Those look really thick and stiff.
Let me try the 71 springs I have or I have some stiffer overload springs off my other 71 shortbox. I want to keep the truck at the same height it is now, Just do not want the springs banging together at the coils like it does now. Yes I need the tight radius at each end for the hold-down bracket.
Sorry the cruise was lame. I worked on the new brake lines today then went to the junkyard this afternoon but they closed early today and would not let me in. :whine:
Put in longer wheel studs in both rear axles. the old studs only caught about 4 threads with these thick aluminum wheels

Time for brakes -- Bought a booster bracket last fall from Captainfab, found a brake booster from a 75 Impala and bought a rebuilt master cylinder for a 75 Impala. Modified a proportioning valve bracket from a S-10 to mount a 70's GM combination valve, then spent two afternoons bending all new brake lines. I ran 1/4" to the rear drums and 3/16" to each front disc. Should stop better than the original set-up.
Double flares are sure hard for me to do, I messed up several times. I hope they all hold when I bleed the system.

The old E-brake set-up from the 64 . This has the short E-brake cables which hooked to this old bracket that centered under the transmission in about the same location as the finished picture.

Attachment 565507

Attachment 565508 the new custom one-off E-brake tensioner complete with Teflon slides. I drilled and welded a 1/2" I.D. sleeve in the transmission brace before I installed the transmission. Heat shrink was installed on the sliding piece so it won't rattle. The new E-brake cables really slide nice and with the brakes all cleaned up Every thing is working smooth

The Fed-ex man has been here so many times he is now coming in the garage to check out the progress on the truck ..
He brought me a new aluminum fuel cell.. Had my mind made up to go with the 49-52 Chevy car tank (Lakeroadster's build) but found this at Summit racing during a "one more search".
It is 17 gallon and includes the 0-90 ohm sending unit , -8AN fittings. (a pick-up, a return, and a vent fitting)
It measures 30" wide X 17"long X 7' deep-- made by RCI
It will need a few modifications of course.........but it is pretty close to a perfect fit

Nice tank. I was going to come out the side and put a ranger door on it but after seeing how much they want for a door I doing some rethinking..

Removal of the bed the easy way . Should make the gas tank much easier to install.
Dave I was planning a side filler door but have not priced them at the Pick a part yard . How much did they tell you they charged?
Are the ranger doors the way to go or will a full size PU or suburban door work as well?
I thought i would just scrounge the junk yard till I found something that matched the body curves.. I bought a year-long entry pass to Jalopy Jungle and It gets me into two different yards.

daverod 03-30-2010 07:57 PM

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

Get me a door when you go.;) The junk yards here suck. They wanted $150 here. Said it was a big deal because they had to cut it out and the gas tank was right there. I think rangers work good. Alan put one on his truck I've seen other people use them too. I'm thinking a full size pickup would work just as good. I always make the old lady help me take my bed off. I just set the back on saw horses and she drives out from under it while I hold the front. Your way looks like less fighting.

Attachment 566374. New tank is 30"wide (X17"long) and frame rails are 34" to the outside so if I trim a little off the bottom flat I should still have 2" of frame rail left on the bottom on each side of the truck. Top rail will be left alone.
Planning on adding a 4" steel channel across the back of the steel frame for strength. Adding 1/4"plating on the outside of the frame for protection of the tank and strength things and then a receiver hitch to help hide the tank.
Tank is only 7"deep so maybe 3"-3.5" might stick below the 4" frame rails. should fit good.
OUCH -I just priced -AN fittings for the top of the cell -- expensive stuff!!! no wonder they are military stuff . The regular people cannot afford them

Daughter bought new tires for her truck today.
There is a local car show here in Star on the Saturday before Mothers day sponsored by Momz garage, a local rod and custom shop.
We are trying to get it drivable by then , but it will most likely be on a trailer and entered in the "under construction" class.
My guy with the Tig welder has too many projects going and is holding up progress on the aluminum fuel tank. .

Thank Alan .
This just kinda turned in to a build thread .
Did not start out that way.I probably should rename it and move it to the build section but it is almost done for now.
We are getting impatient to drive it again so the body work is going to wait (until after the inevitable teenage wreck)
Body and paint were done in 2000 but a little rust is sneaking back in the usual places. I may get it back someday when the girls are done with it , then I will rework it again --- Bubba

The frame rails are cleaned up and primed and undercoated. I put the springs from a 71 long bed C-10 just to see where it will sit when the tires go on and if I will get dropped springs later. Truck had 255/60/15 rear and 215/70/15 fronts. I am putting 235 /60/15 on all four . the rims are 8.5" wide and the old fronts did not fit right on that wide of rim. Power steering will turn them easier.Installed a new electric fuel pump and filters with new 3/8" aluminum fuel lines from tank to carb. Attachment 576763

Attachment 576764The tank as installed and the frame has been slightly modified to fit. the filler neck will turn out over the frame rails

the tank is advertised as 17 gallon , fits pretty well and does not hang down very far. I had the aluminum angle for the brackets welded on locally. I cut out the AN-8 fittings and made some tapped aluminum blocks with MIP thread that welded inside the tank and so I could use fighter radius fittings. The AN -8 90* would not clear the bottom of the bed.I moved the pick-up tube to the passenger side of the tank. Thought if you ran out of gas and pulled off the road the gas would run to that side .
Attachment 576765I welded heavy 4" channel across the back of the frame and braced it well . If you get rear ended I wanted some strength around that tank. Still better there than in the cab! I welded angle tabs out for the bed mounts. the original mount holes are now in-accessible. the bottom of the bed rail has holes for outside the frame anyway. ran all new electrical wiring for lights and tank sender added a spare wire for future back up lights and maybe a trailer plug. ran a frame ground too

Attachment 576766 Now I can build the filler neck and turn it out over the frame rail. and to a fill door cut in the side of the bed like Alan is doing in his thread

Wire wheeled it until it shined- wiped with thinner . sprayed red oxide primer then covered with rustoleum undercoating spray.
It should last another 40 years

daverod 04-28-2010 07:56 PM

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

So is that paint rubberized?:uhmk:

bubba327 04-28-2010 11:33 PM

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

Yes the undercoating is very rubberized and sticks to anything in it's way. The overspray went on my jeans and will not wash out.
Rustoleum undercoating spray from auto zone Was about $7 a can. I am pleased the way it stuck. Had to scrape a section off where the new bed mounts needed to weld on and it was well adhered .
The red oxide primer was from a industrial distributor. nothing fancy

It is a driver again !!!!
I put in the HEI, bolted on the old Rochester B and Darn --it would not start with out starting fluid nor would it stay running . Tried a different monojet . would not idle- just off idle and rpm. Would not start when hot.Tried a rochester 2 jet - again lots of rpm, no idle. then the float stuck and I had a flood of gas down the intake. Had to quit for the night and dry things up. Borrowed a different rochester 2 jet and again no luck idling finally tried a monojet leftover from my 71 , just bolted it on after at least four years of sitting and it starts and runs- not real smooth but starts good hot and cold and it no flat spots in acceleration. I did find early on that the HEI likes around 10 degrees advance instead of 0-4 as with the points.
Attachment 579527 I did not want to put gas in the new tank until I am finished welding back in that area. We just strapped the gas can to a board bolted quickly to the frame.

Attachment 579528 Still LOTS of stuff to do but it sure felt great to drive it again after 11 months . I need to finish the gas tank filler neck before the bed can go back on. Then aligned and licensed and tags
whoops still need speedometer and gauges and seat belts and wiring ... on and on .........................................

Sweet ride.;) Good to see you driving. Who needs a bed anyway. I like the gas can idea. Gotta love it when gas just gushes down the intake.

Re: At Last- Power steering in a I-6

Dave- I cheated and made it a trailer queen for a day. I hid the flatbed around the corner of a building out of sight and drove it the last little bit into view. I do not have current stickers for it yet and with no bed, lights tags ... It was not worth the risk of getting the sheriff all exited.
I had a heck of a time getting it up the ramps on the flatbed. No weight and no bed it just spun the tires. I finally backed it on with two friends pushing. the ramps had a little traction but when the rears hit the boards on the beavertail they just spun and slipped sideways . Kinda got a little close to falling off.

It is good to be renamed and here in the build section.
I decided to rename it "Bubbas Recycling Project' as I have scrounged parts off 22 different vehicles now as I rebuild this truck.
I bought a year pass to Jalopy Jungle, the local pick-a-part, and I am going to use it as much as possible.
Back to work after the Show and Shine- I need to finish the gas tank filler.

You need to find me a gas door. I'm still lookin. Motorfest is coming up fast. You need to get your truck done and enter it.

bubba327 05-12-2010 12:16 AM

Re: Bubba's recycling project

I took a filler neck off F*@d truck as a trial run. It is the old style with no door , just a exposed chrome cap.
It will just need a hole in the side of the bed about 2.5"". It is not permanent but will be quicker for now.
When my body work/ bondo skills return I will tackle the hinged filler door. The exposed gas cap and will be in the same location as the future filler door so I am not screwing any thing up permanently. The hole will trim out when the filler door section gets cut in.
