Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Well, catching up to where we are today....July 1st came and went....but we're not too far away from being completed....
shot of the tailgate "guts" to go in my new gate....original had more rust than we originally thought once we started cleaning it up.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010017.jpg picture of the interior now...seats are at the upholstry shop.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010019.jpg Jason did some final welding on the repop door that was cut down...since these pics he's filed these down but they looked so nice just welded.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010010.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010011.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Started working on cleaning and painting the interior and small latch parts. It continues to amaze me how nice this truck and its' parts are. Hardly a hint of light surface rust on the seat tracks for almost 40 year old parts in a vehicle that has a removeable top and is 4x4....crazy.....

After paint
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010045.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010046.jpg Seat backs were coming out great..... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010044.jpg Until I decided I wanted one more coat for durability....I waited 24 hours...but not the 48they recommend.....so I got to sand them back down and will wait a day to be safe before spraying them because of this..... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010047.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
wow, sorry for the poor quality pictures...the rest of the parts are super smooth and glossy....the seat backs are a wrinkle finish
Here's the shift boot for the 205 transfer case shifter... in progress.... from raw steel with machine marks... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010042.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010043.jpg to current....machine marks gone...just finished up with 600 grit and going to start polishing it up.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...1st2010041.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Here's the other parts I did....they all came out nice. Metallic silver to offset the blue and black...

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
I got another coat of the bedliner on the front inners so they are done along with the rears....will get pics of that soon. Came out very nice!
Now to paint the engine side of the inners in a gloss black to match the rest of the underhood parts. Then they will be installed and taped off with the rest of the engine bay before paint. |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Very nice progress! you are rocking on this one!

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
couple minor update pics from tonight....
Sanded down and repainted the metal seat backs Here's the inners with the bedliner inside....going to paint the outside gloss tomorrow or Monday. Got PVC to build a temporary paint booth....put it together and the size is perfect....but the 1" PVC is about at its' strength limit now and once we add the plastic any wind would be trouble, so I went out and bought 2" PVC pipe and fittings. I will take some pics and do a brief writeup on it for others considering this. Should have under 150 in it and will be able to re-use most of it. Painted parts I think there were some paint fumes hanging around  http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...ndt2010001.jpg Here's the inners http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...ndt2010002.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...ndt2010003.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
So the inners have the bedliner on the inside....now the outside needed done....
Finished those up and sprayed the new hood hinges..... scuffed up primer vs painted... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010001.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010002.jpg half way painted http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010003.jpg done http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010004.jpg and dry after the dust settled.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...4th2010005.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
got the last of the small parts painted tonight....
as I mentioned...this truck continues to amaze me...no surface rust on any of the seat or seatbelt bolts.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010001.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010002.jpg then touched up the last undercarriage parts that I wanted with bedliner This is the very rear of the truck....like I said...I continued to be surprised on how nice this thing is... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010015.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
well, that last pic doesn't actually do justice to how clean the underside is...it's a little dusty right now but amazing shape...
the big project for the evening was getting the paint booth together...the first attempt was 1" and just not sturdy enough... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010003.jpg Ended up getting 2" PVC. Used 11 pieces and cut three in half at 5' tall. Combined with the 45 degree fittings the peak is at 11 1/2 feet. It's a little over 20' long and about 15' wide. Here is the assembly process....ended up gluing the main joints....can always cut and use couplings later to re-use this. http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010004.jpg One end http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010005.jpg Center fitting http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010006.jpg Used old cat litter containers filled with sand for the base for stability....put the lids on and cut the holes slightly smaller for a tight fit. Has worked great so far. http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010007.jpg This thing is BIG http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010008.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010009.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Started applying the plastic sheeting
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010011.jpg Good old duct tape http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010012.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010014.jpg And here it is awaiting the ends and a door....did I mention it is BIG http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...5th2010013.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"

|
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
wow lol HUGE!
looks nice, im suprized you of all people dont have the hookups to a paint booth? I cant wait to see the blazer in color! Love the longbed in the back. |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
I like the paint booth! I actually just finished setting up my friends booth in my shop. It is somewhat flimsy, 3/4" pvc. But, since it's inside I think it will work out okay, I will find out early in the morning. Laying paint on the 86 project.
Hope to see some color on your blazer pretty quick too:ito: |

The truck in the background WAS mine....now It's Jason...the guy who's helping me with the blazer. Check out the link to the LWB patina build in my signature line below. I will keep updating the thread as he/we continue to work on it. The cool thing is he said I can drive it whenever I want still. Quote:

Painted a few more small pieces today and got a good part of the truck taped off. Jason's going to finish taping it in the morning and then shoot it with primer. |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Wow! It's been a long time since I looked in on this one. You rock!! It is really looking great, wish I lived closer so I could come by and give you a hand!

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Well, here are pictures from Tues night to bring you up to speed...
Got my rear panel mounts and tailgate parts painted up http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010007.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010012.jpg Then started taping.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010006.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010010.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010011.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Then, I get a text late morning today....big gust of wind and the paint booth leaned over. Didn't do any damage to the truck but the plastic ripped and since the wind was on and off....we decided to move the truck inside the shop after all....so a day wasted on a booth....oh well. things happen.
Jason got a first coat of primer on everything but the new tailgate and the doors. Came by to block sand this evening. A couple spots that looked fine before primer need more attention (amazing how it shows things up) so we're going to use some "icing" (lightweight filler/putty) to get those perfect and then sand and apply one more coat of primer before paint. The truck is coming out so nice and everything else is so nice we decided to take the paint job to the next level. Took the hood off and sanded that down...had some runs in the finish that weren't going to be up to par with the build. Re-doing the fenders even though the PO had jammed them because there were some scratches from his fitting them on. And re-doing the windshield frame because of some small scratches. Here's the hood, some of the blocking tools we used, and the SPID which I'm not sure I'd posted before... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010037.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010039.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010038.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010036.jpg |

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
And the blazer in primer....got it and all the parts blocked out nicely tonight. The primer is like glass but there are those few spots we want to touch up so one more final coat after that tomorrow and then blocking one more time before sealer, paint, and clear.
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010028.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010029.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010030.jpg |
Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
For those that hadn't followed from the beginning, the windshield frame, dash, and firewall are all finish painted already. So the windshield was installed after the paint. We're re-painting the frame for some scratches (from the top going on/off) but just taping off the gasket since it's already painted and cleared under the gasket.

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Awesome blazer i love those things. what kind of texture paint did you put underneath? Was that for rust proofing?
Thanks |

Got all the parts with one coat of primer and block sanded. they all look great. have some small work to do that Jason used "icing" on tonight (light filler) His plan now is to have it in color and clear by Thursday at the latest. He's as ready as me to have this done as he has other projects waiting in addition to his daily flow of small jobs like timing chains, axles, pinion seals, ac compressors, etc etc... Here are some more picture of parts after sanding... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010033.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010034.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...7th2010035.jpg |

Re: 71 Blazer "Finishing Touches"
Went through my final boxes of parts to come up with a final list (until I start final assembly and find more things I need ;) )
Seems like I have or have ordered everything minus some weatherstrip for the top. Got it all ready to take over to the garage as soon as paint is dry/cured. I spent a little while cleaning up the visors more and also cleaned up the shift boot...it was a little dirty compared to the ring I polished up for it  Both came out looking like new so I was pleased no before.... After.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...2th2010011.jpg here's the boot before http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...2th2010010.jpg and comparing the old ring to new.....a SLIGHT improvement.... http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...2th2010009.jpg Can't wait to see it all together :metal: http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...2th2010012.jpg |
