Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Did you try to fit the air cleaner on the carb? If the air cleaner and distributor came off a Chevrolet engine they may not fit a GMC.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
From what I have seen, they will interchange. It fits

Put the Original Air Breather on
The truck wants to crank but won't I've put new Spark plugs in New Coil New wires Could the coil be hooked up wrong? Because I've done it before I'll try tomorrow Took out the indicator bulbs to replace with new ones to see if they'll work |

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Yes I put fuel in it Coral, please no smart responses
I might as well get a new Tail light wiring, because its been spliced etc.. shorts out on the right side and left side works, but looks bad. Bought another Distributor to replace the one in mine, it came out of a 235 engine. Trying to get it cleaned up.. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
So was there much rust in the fuel tank? Did you get it installed or are you still using the plastic tank? Just asking for us so we know the fuel supply situation.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Using the Plastic gas tank until the Metal one is cleaned etc
Its getting Gas, I am sure its getting air...Pretty sure it isn't getting Spark. I'll figure it out tomorrow morning |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I bought my Air breather/Distributor from "Firetoys" '59 Apache.
Tomorrow I will soak the Distributor in Carb cleaner and paint it Gloss black.. Once I fiddle with the wiring, and get it started. I will see about buying some flexible fuel line to run down the cab to the hard line. The trucks progress it moving slowly but It'll get there Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Okay woke up this morning, switched the wires and it cranked right up
Major fuel leaks around the the new inline fuel filter.. I push the choke in and it dies, I am thinking the Timing and tuning is way off. I get my paycheck today so Im going to buy better(smaller) hose for the fuel lines. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
true dedication when you wake up early and start working on your truck and when you cant wait for payday to buy new parts
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Fuel went everywhere when I cranked it up. I wish someone was closer to help me out
I have tuned it a little. I just need to let my local mechanic have a look at it and see if he can get it running better..Because its starting to really really piss me off |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
dam no kidding if I was there id back u up ive torn my 6 apart numerous times ive got like 5 back up motors set aside to LOL my buddy taught me to listen to the motor and go from there
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Well all I know is, I'm pulling it to a Local mechanic and letting them solve all of the issues..Pissed off to the damn max
Got my paycheck Headed to O'Reillys to buy smaller hose and some light bulbs |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
have you purchased the pertronix kit yet? if not I would save some money and buy the kit and try it again. I had so much trouble with points every old car I had was moved to electronic ignition
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I don't have the money at the moment to get it. I am short a couple Twenties to get it.
Im just going to back away from it..It is always something with this truck |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Don't get to discouraged.
You got it to start and that's 90% of it right there. Getting it running smoothly shouldn't be that bad now. Kim |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
You can isolate the circuit by running a jump from the positive battery terminal directly to the hot side of the coil (side that does not go to the distributor). Starter circuit will turn it over to get started. If it runs fine and does not quit start looking for loose bad wires. If still dies then in the coil/distributor - Orrie's wise words
Well it is raining today so I am not going to be able to work on the truck. I am planning to buy a smaller fuel hose to put on the Hard lines to stop the leaks... When I fix that, I am going to try to get it running to pull over to my mechanic(across the street) Hopefully he can fix all of the issues |

Oil Reads 30 Temp Gauge, well its running over the line a hair? could it be because of the new Temp sending unit? It runs but I can literally adjust the timing while its running..I need to get a rachet to it and tighten it down real good |

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Well, I'd like to go with Electronic ignition Orge
Now my Horn isn't working.I know it isn't the fuse, because I just replaced them..The relay is old as dirt |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
man bro if it wasn't for bad luck you'd have no luck at all I rewired my whole truck but have yet to run power to it so I may be on the same sinking ship :)
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Welcome to my world
Ordered a New Horn Relay from O'reillys so hopefully that'll fix the problem Where is the best place to get new tail light wiring? |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
wire it yourself buy some wire bro 2 wires that's it you can buy the harness from classic parts
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The Speedometer cable won't come out where the Transmission is? Its pissing me off, I've sprayed WD-40 on it...Still nothing, I've tried pliers

Well I know my Dimmer switch to works. I am guessing my headlight switch works fine..but all that doesn't work, is the Dome light. Still trying to figure out why the Right indicator light isn't blinking correctly
All of the Dash lights worked, just checked them..Dimmer switch works fine. Dome light and right indicator light doesn't working... Guessing the flasher is shorting out The tail lights wiring has Fuse links in it so another sign of MAJOR ISSUES. Cleaned the Fuse area and grounding wiring Lost the Barb fitting on the end of the Vacuum line, don't ask how.. I have no damn clue !! Thankfully I have another one on the extra Vacuum advance The truck still wants to die when I press the Gas pedal at times, I am guessing its because the Vacuum lines not hooked up |

buying new parts instead of testing them is often a waste of money. harbor fright has free multimeters right now. pick one up and get to know how they work. the horn rely is hot and also the main power feed for the whole wiring system the horn button grounds the relay to make the horn work figure out what is wrong with the system before buying parts usually it is the horn button, easy to test by unplugging the horn button wire and ground the wire to the relay |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
funny I was looking for missing visors for my truck and found another distributor
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Turns out it was the relay !!! Bought one from O'reillys and sure enough once I plugged it in it worked a lot better. I mean I've heard bad things bout the HEI so Im not sure about it to be honest. I've tried wiggling the old speedo out of the Transmission and it will not twist off..So I'm stuck !!!
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
PB blast!!! makes WD-40 look like water ive remove broken rusted bolts out of exhaust manifolds with it they have it at oreillys
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Fiddling with the Wiring, I got the Vacuum Wipers to work as they should(I think)
It starts up on command now.Making some good progress. They move now.Theres a hole in the Vacuum wiper hose to the manifold, and I'm going to wrap it up. Running great, I still need to hook up the Vacuum Advance. It blows out some smoke? Guessing thats normal...its not much, only when I start it up very little |

Found this while looking for something else, 1959 factory turn signal wiring diagram, looks like the flasher is just up under the dash.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
So that makes the flasher on the Left side of the dash towards I'll have to look tomorrow
Thanks Orrie |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Okay UPDATE
Finally got the old Speedo Cable housing out off of the Transmission Put the new one in, on the Gauge, and the Tranny Gauge still doesn't work, I am starting to think that, that Plastic gear thing has pretty much worn itself out |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
if you are ambitious you might want to carefully take apart the speedo to see if anything is stuck ,
dont force anything just give it a good light cleaning and check for anything loose or gummed up might be in the speedo head juss sayin is all ! |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I looked all up in the Dash, no signs of a Flasher it has to be there somewhere

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
You forgot costs for primer, plastic, consumables. Also body tools if you don't have them unless you are going for the barn find look. Trace the yellow wires from the signal harness, you will find the flasher, the empty connector or a bare end.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Sadly, its already been primerd over with that black stuff, It has to have one connected or the Left side flasher wouldn't work

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Okay, finally figured out where the Turn signal flasher was located I was looking at it the whole time and had no idea. When I take the lever down it flashes, but when I turn it up nothing happens, I am starting to think the Turn signal switch is the issue here. I really shouldn't be worrying about the Turn signals now but I just like working on the smaller items before I move to the bigger issues
