I managed to sell the OG 4-speed (without shifter) for $100 on CL...

A customer needed a flange made out of 1/2" plate, for a 280Z ... Which gained me another $50 .....

The guy wanted $50 for the crossmember, and $125 for the PS box and pump.....I would of spent some time at P n P hand wrenching a crossmember off, considering the entire suspension would have to be removed, and would still been charged at least $50...

So he gave it all to me for $150 :metal:

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

NOW FOR SOME BAD NEWS ......:sumo:
-
-
Before I resealed the engine, I went ahead and ran a compression test on it...which resulted in some LOW numbers....
-
-
http://i49.tinypic.com/25a2dt1.jpg
-
-
Compression is at about HALF of what it should be.....Well, this will definately slow the engine "detailing" down a bit...
-
-
Gonna weld a air fitting to an old spark plug and perform a leak down, but Im sure it will recieve a full overhaul....

Corts60 08-12-2012 01:38 PM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Great looking burb John! That sucks about the compression results.

ChiefRocka 08-12-2012 02:01 PM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Ya.... the engine is the original from my '63 C-10.

Even thought the compression is low, it was pretty close thru all six....Thus it gave it a decent idle.

I never drove the truck because the Powerglide was bad.

So I pulled it out, and it sat untill I decided to use it as a temporary powerplant for the Burb.

Well, now I'm gonna have to build it. Regardless, it'll wind up back in the truck someday.

My buddy hooked me up with this too ....

not sure if you have tried or not but u might soak those cylinders in marval mystery oil.. could just have some rings sticking

ChiefRocka 08-12-2012 09:04 PM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Well, gonna drop oil in cylinders, and recheck....then go from there.

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

If you can get some Kroil to put down the cylinders. Soak them for about an hour, spin the engine over and soak again until the next day. Do this again the second day and on the third day spin it over and then check compression. If it's stuck rings the Kroil will free them up. At least it has for me a few times.

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Good score on the front clip....no spindles or control arms though?

Too bad about the compression on the 292. Hopefully it is just a stuck ring or two, and you can get them freed up.

Too bad you're so far away. I have a neighbor that has a nice running '72 350/TH350 for reasonable.

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Hey Captain.....

I have the a-arms already....

New bushings in boxes, as well as 88-98 BJ's.

Also, a machinist buddy is making up some collars (as we speak) to weld in the LCA's.

Left over slindles are on the shelf as well from a lowering job.

Just gonna need some loaded calipers, hoses, bearings, and tierods and I should be good to go !

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Today I pressure washed the engine, after soaking with Oven Cleaner (works better than degreaser, btw) .... Then pulled it apart.
-
-
No sludge what so ever on head or in crankcase/pan.

Lots of carbon, probably when the carb lost its main jet (see C-10 thread)

and was running super rich, which probably washed the cylinder walls.

Anyway, the pistons are ALREADY .060 OVER , so hopefully they are straight...

You can still see the hone marks, and there is no ridge...bearings are near perfect.

So, once I remove the crank (balancer puller is at shop) my machine shop is gonna mic everything, and go from there....Plan is to re-ring at minimum. An engine kit with pistons is relatively cheap, so if I go there, itll be flat tops at least.

oven cleaner huh will it be ok if I use it while the engine is still in the truck?

just remember that oven cleaner is lye. if you are worried about anything(corrosive) wash it down with vinegar and then water after.

Believe it or not, just soap and water and Scotch Brite pads.

Actually, step it up to the HD auto body style of pads.

Picked some up at Walmart, with a nice handle too.

In some areas, there are blue and tan under the primer, before the white.

It's time consumings, but with some cold ones.....it gets done !!

cut the scotch brite pad into a circle and use it on a da sander alot faster!!!

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

I thought about that....

In fact, they sell them for your drill, but I think a DA would be better...

Captainfab 08-15-2012 11:43 PM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Cool!

Is he going to cut the LCA's for you also?

If I may make a suggestion......I would cut a slight step in the OD of those collars. That will serve 2 purposes. One, it will help keep the collar in plane with the LCA. Second, it will give you a safety factor if the lip is placed on the bottom side. That's just how I plan on doing mine when the time comes.

I hear what you're saying about the a collar that is a good idea. I'm confident in my welding that they will never come out of the lower a arm.

I should be able to keep it nice and square.

I plan to enlarge the opening myself.

I know the dude is really busy but I'm gonna go in asking about the collar.....

I need to order some more spot weld cutters, but decided to try out HarborFreights $5 one. Works great ... but at 3/8", its just too dam big.

For under the cowl, I can get away with it ... still too large of a diameter.

Both fresh boxes need to come off to repair some rot on the body...

Looks like you are having fun there.

My truck has slowed down also. Waiting for an under dast harness from Greg so I can do some of the wiring. Need a upper radiator hose which is hard to find so I think I am going to order a stainless flex hose but don't know if I want the chrome ends or just hoses. $78 with ends and $41 with rubber hoses.

ChiefRocka 08-24-2012 07:49 AM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Personily, I like the flex hoses with just the rubber couplers. One word of caution, the hose clamps that come in those kits suck. Replace with decent ones.

I think for the way my engine compartment looks rubber ends would be better. It keeps the theme. Plus at almost $37 less more appealing.

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

After installing, I noticed the underside FRONT TWO bolt holes line up perfectly, and well as the upper a-arm studs are close, as well as indintations for a-arm clearance.

After checking Mark's how, and chatting with him....he seems to recall the REAR hole lineing up.....Hmmm ?? He also mentioned he did his 15 yrs ago, and doesn't recall exactly ...

I never did mark the spindle location to ground, so I'm gonna slide the torsion frontend back on to get a measurement, no biggie...

UNLESS SOMEONE HERE CAN CONFIRM THE FRONT TWO ARE CORRECT ??
