Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Looks good Pete!
Funny yours came with the small mirror and you prefer the camper. Mine came with camper Mirrors and I'm leaving the small mirror. Just pulled those seats I got from you apart. Should have new foams and covers In a couple weeks! |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Pete,
Your making great progress. Nothing alittle love can't fix. :) Eric |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
For some reason I'm not getting email updates on this thread...seems like I've missed a lot of progress this month. Glad I stopped by. Tough luck on the hood Pete. Good thing you had a line on a replacement (you always do) and that the blaster was willing to make good. Love those Genuine GM Parts. You are first class all the way. This is going to be a show stopper. Keep it up. Can't wait for more!

Big thanks to you guys for following along and sorry for my lengthy delay. Hope 2017 is off to a good start for y'all!
I've got the Blazer back with Eric and the guys at Mild to Wild here in Albuquerque. They did a great job on my K20 and we had a lot of fun in the process so taking the Blazer back to them was a no-brainer. Making progress on the sheet metal repair and there were no unpleasant surprises once the paint was blasted away. Barry did a great job re-aligning the previously replaced LH rear quarter at the B pillar so a pillar patch wasn't necessary. Fortunately, the replacement quarter was a GM piece and likely done a long while ago so the caged nuts are present for a single wall top in addition to the holes for a double wall top. I've collected various parts, had the carb rebuilt by Sean Murphy Induction, am taking the motor to the machine shop tomorrow, and am awaiting the front seat upholstery and rear panels (rear seat cover is in-hand). The initial set of front bucket seat covers did not have the plaid aligned as per OEM and are being redone (I'm told the OEM style takes more fabric incurring more expense so not typically done). I'll try to post more frequently. More pics available through the Mild to Wild site: http://www.mildtowildinc.com/index.c...=cat/cat72.htm |

Thanks Brad!
Loaded the motor into my gmc and delivered it to the folks at Automotive Machine Services, a local shop that's been in business here for many decades. Provided the block and heads check out, the engine will be more-or-less stock but with a roller cam/rockers and a "RV" cam (eke out some more torque). |

Thanks Chris and Glenn.
I couldn't easily find a fuel neck in the garage tonight but I do have this pic if it helps. The clamps are tower clamps and an OEM black zip tie secures the smaller diameter (vapor?) hose to the adjacent fuel neck. Below the floor pan, tower clamps are used as well. Good to know about the "A" - suspect OEM and will keep tabs. I'm debating whether or not to replate the tank in zinc. I'm told galvanizing is zinc plating but the crystal structure is larger. |

Thank you, that picture helps me a lot.

Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Hello Pete,
I like your new K5 Highlander. Didn't know you had started another project. Will look forward to the build. The boys and I are finishing up a lot of rust repair on a 71 Blazer for a friend. It was a bugger because we had to replace all the floors and most of their related pieces. We are only doing the rust repair on it. Sure glad you're rescuing the Blazer. |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Hello Pete,
That was cool to see my buddy Doug from AMS in the picture you posted. Since I relocated out here I still send all my machine work out to him since I go back to Albuquerque often. Especially when it comes to a numbers matching or special build. Thanks Chris |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Thanks guys for following along. Not too much new to report as regards the build - rust repair is wrapping up on the passenger side and soon the front clip will be mocked-up for fitment then the tub and frame will part ways for a while. I've got some new bolt pics that I'll post up soon - the OEM fuel pump bolts are a unique work of art.
My plan from the outset was to farm out the paint/body and machine work to the pros and I'll handle much of the reassembly now that I some workspace. My wife and I have a 12 week old daughter now so she may slow things down a bit more. I'm going to do my best to balance the enjoyment of what may be a final build for me with fun time with my daughter. |

Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby girl. Nothing compares to those little ones. I think my son Clay took some pictures of the Blazer. Will post some if he did. Glad we could be of some help. The people over at Alcan provide a great product for whatever individual needs a person may want. Hope your experience with them is the same as ours. Thank you |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Hi Pete,
Man, I gotta ask where did you get your zinc oxide stuff done, it looks great. Not many choices anymore. Lmk buddy thanks. |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Pete,
I can fully relate to that. Doug has bailed me out several times. For sure when I get out that way I'll get in touch with you. |

Thanks guys!
Dave, Kaehr plating in ABQ has been my source for the clear zinc and black phos http://www.kaehr.com - their customer service has gone down hill and prices have gone up. The work on some bolts is so so but I believe that has more to do with the condition of the metal. Most pieces turn out great. I can post more pics later but here are some washer nozzles. I had the engine and tranny dip sticks and tubes done - turned out great. The fuel tank straps look new. |

Front bucket covers are en route, I've got the back seat cover already. Still waiting on my rear panels - after 11 mos soon to be a one year wait.
For anyone who wants plaid front covers note that GM centered the plaid - there is one complete "band" of blue plaid that runs up the midline of the seat flanked by two white "bands" on either side. Not all reproduced covers will have the plaid centered as GM did it. I could find to consistency in the rear seat but all fronts were done as described. |
Re: 1972 Medium Blue Highlander Blazer Resto
Pete,
Thanks for sharing the info. Your project sure is coming along nicely! Your right, it does take time to put everything together. |
