This is my DD 72 C/30 wrecker, I'm the 2nd owner, it spent the first 33 years of it's life as a flatbed pulling a backhoe, then it sat from 05 till 11 when I bought it and made it a wrecker. it gets a lot of looks and compliments. I think its pretty cool myself. I put it this months TOTM contest. Coop

Real nice Wrecker there.

I've got a '72 C-30 with a Flatbed and a Homles 440 on another truck and just may put the Wrecker Body on the '72 someday.

Another great picture of a 6500. That one looks fairly new.

Strange it doesn't have factory type Cab Lights and no Air Horn. I always believed they were standard equipment, but maybe they weren't.

98 Chev 1 ton frame, 454 multi port behind the cab, 4L80E trans, 4 18 wheeler bags in backk, 2 2600 lb. bags in front ,each axle independently controlled,32 ft. long. No ramps, just drop, load, raise and go. Just sorting out the details, but I think everything will work. Need hinges on the boxes, more bracing on the deck, etc.

Hi guys, new member. I was glad to finally find a forum on Medium / Heavy haulers. Here's the flatbed I just got. 1982 GMC C6500. 427TD with a Clark 285V 5 speed with a 2 speed rear axle. It looks rough but it was free and everything works. There's ten years worth of hacking and Mickey Mousing to fix, but the engine starts right up and the hydraulics work awesome.

That's what you need to haul these pickups! Are you saying it's a flatbed,tilt,or a rollback? I assume rollback or tilt bed because you mentioned hydraulics. Doesn't look that bad at all. Get all the bugs straightened out and you'll have a great truck.

Looks good and as mentioned, you can beat the price.

I'm also wondering if it is actually a Rollback.

Also see that it is just over CDL at 27,500. When that truck was built the 26,000 limit was not established yet. Today that GVW is a little rare as something that close would be reduced to get under the limit.

Thanks. Yeah it's a rollback. I don't like that the bed sits so far back from the cab, although it's a perfect place for a short utility body. I do wish the bed was longer, but I think I'll probably swap it for an aluminum Chevron or something similar if I ever come across one. Do you guys think there'll be a difference mileage wise compared to this steel body? Can't find an ID tag on the rollback body. My friend I got it from bought it at an auction about 12 years ago. He put all brand new rubber on it all the way around (9.00-20), and had new springs put in. It's been sitting for a couple years so I've been going over his place and working on it getting it ready to bring home. I replaced the fuel lines, starter silinoid, new battery cables, battery, and fixed the choke cable. It starts right up but I gotta pull the r/s exhaust manifold and replace the flange studs, really annoying exhaust leak. Although I'm wondering if big block pickup truck headers would fit and might let it breath some. The guy my friend let use it must have beat the crap out of it cause there's alot of mickey mouse hacking. Rachet straps holding the hydraulic tank in place, a plastic pvc pipe for a PTO lever, and then there's the wiring. But it's free and for the most part all it's gonna cost me to get her back to her old glory is time. It's perfect for what I wanna do. Getting my dealer's license so I'll have a way to bring stuff back from auction, take my car to the track, and scrap. I'm wondering if I put a Edelbrock Performer cam and intake on it with the headers if it'll make a difference pulling wise. Maybe help with gas mileage if it runs more effecient. Not expecting miracles, lol.

I would say that the Aluminum Bed would make some difference but not enough to justify changing it, for weight purposes anyway. Actually a Steel Bed takes a better punishment.

Headers might be worth looking into, especially if you need exahaust work, but I wouldn't go much beyond that, in my opinion. I would just super-tune what you have.

I see that you are from Colchester, CT and you mentioned "Track". You wouldn't be referring to the old Connecticut Dragway by chance? I had heard that it is closed down.

Special K, yes your right it closed down years ago. The track is still there and is is privately owned by Consumer Reports (last I knew) for new vehicle testing. It's funny cause I've talked to people from all over, even out of state, and when I tell them where I'm from, this dinky little town, they know exactly where it is. "I use to race there back in the 80's" They know Colchester from the old CT Dragway and Harry's burger stand. My uncle and my cousin race at Lebanon Valley. It's a 2 hour drive but it's alot of fun. You can go up Friday night, camp in the pits, test and tune all day Saturday, and Eliminations start Sunday morning. He's got a couple cars he and my cousin race and he likes the idea of having another truck to haul the cars up there. Hopefully I'll be taking my car up too if I ever finish it.

My days at CT Dragway were from about 1970 the first time to about '77 the last time. I towed a 427 Chevelle there a time or two and my buddy raced his '72 LT-1 Corvette there. One day it rained and I helped dry the track with my '66 GMC Pick-up. There was just a bunch of us driving whatever we had up and down the track. Have a lot of good memories there.
