I am pretty much done touching the truck until the patch panels get welded in. I want to leave the doors on for test fitting and windows/windshield in case he needs to push it outside for another project to come in. Then I'll get it back and take it down to bare metal and do the body work on it. After that it'll be ready for paint and reassembly. Easy, right ;):lol::lol: |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Here's a picture of the inner A/C box removed.....to prove I did it.
I took the picture yesterday but just uploaded it tonight http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5397.jpg |

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Getting a black rear slider for the truck from the brother of the previous owner. It's almost new and they are giving me an excellent deal. I might try my hand at rebuilding the stock one in the truck now but I want to paint it black anyways after seeing one with the stainless trim around it at a car show. Looked sharp! This way I'll have the stock one if the next owner wants it but it will look better to me :D

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
it is always nice to keep the original parts to the truck even thouh you dont need them nothin better than getting a documented truck

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Looking forward to getting all my woodgrain, a restored console, and the AM/FM probably early next week!!!
Ordered a paper and rubber kit for the trans and a 30yr master trans tech is going to go through it for me to check it also. Jason is going to go through the engine and do leak down and compression tests on it to make sure all is good and if we have any suspicions I'm sending the heads to be hot tanked and checked. Dropping the truck off tentatively next Thursday for him to start welding in the patch panels. Things should really start to move in this build after that. And the best thing is...when It's painted I'm going to have all or almost all of the parts ready to bolt right in :D |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
WOW...whats this going to be a 2 month build ???

Looks really good, this is gonna be a quick build haha.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Well, going to be a little hiccup....had my tranny picked up yesterday with a paper and rubber kit to be put in....the guy tore into it to make sure it all looked good and the 2nd servo pin had been broken in two and all the 2nd gear clutches were fried.
So...i'm going to look for another tranny. I could get it fixed but it's not worth it for me....would rather sell this for parts and find a good one I can freshen up...will be cheaper in the long run. I'm really actually Hoping the guy I got it from will swap one out because this one was supposed to be good. Also looking at a couple local but trying to find one from a 72 to keep it original since the block and everything else is so far.... |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
i understand wanting all 72 since just about everything is it means more when it is all one year and not ''bastard'' or ''heinz 57'' i like when i buy 67 parts and not 68 72
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Too bad about the tranny. I know your looking at keeping it all 72, but a 4 speed auto would sure be a nice upgrade.
|
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I really want to keep this one all original...the more I've been finding nice original parts the more it's made me want to. The only thing it won't get will be a step bumper and the olive interior :)
It's just such a special, desireable truck I feel it's the only way to do it right....and assure I get top dollar for it when sold. :D |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Too bad about the tranny, but it's a break you found out about it now. Can the case still be used if you find another?

I've been trying to plan ahead so there are no holdups at the end of the project. Like most the final bodywork/paint are my biggest X-factor right now... I will be checking out the motor with Jason's help in a couple weeks...hope that goes better than checking out the tranny ;) |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Will be picking up the slider next week and hope to have my woodgrain interior parts soon thereafter. Friday is hopefully the big day for the welding to begin. Getting it transported to the shop Thursday night. It looks like I'll be using the nice original bed so I'll be working on that as well (really wanted to be lazy and use a repop  I'm going to set the motor into place to make it easy to transport it over and we'll be going through that at the same time... I have picked up a few important parts in the last week :D http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5418.jpg http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...B/IMG_5417.jpg |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
I also got the tach I will be using for my truck. Will be adding the 80lb oil gauge....and possibly a vacuum gauge....haven't decided on that yet....

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Thank you very much! Do you know if anyone repops those or if carpet for the tank can be ordered with it? Never seen those before---very cool! Thanks again for the picture...

I am very curious if they are available repop as well. Does anyone know if the gastank cardboard cover is needed to place under the carpet? Or is the carpet the only thing covering the gastank? |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
Yes, you still want the cardboard cover. Otherwise the gas can stain the carpet around where the lines go in at. These brass clips aren't reproduced to my knowledge. Let me know if you find out otherwise. Did you happen to get any measurements of the holes yet? Trevor

Yeah, my repop carpet came with the plastic clips to drape over the gas tank. The brass sets I have came from original bucket seat optioned trucks. Trevor

Well, the holes are kinda all over the place. No real uniform spacing. From the door edge (with gasket removed from the passenger door over to the first hole is 1 1/2", then 2 3/4 to the next hole, 3 9/16 to the next, 3 1/2, 7 1/2, 7 7/8, and then 8 5/16 which puts us lined up directly over the center hole in the gas tank upper bolt holes. Next hole is 6 7/16 over, then 7 3/4, 7 5/8, 7 5/8, 4 1/4, and then 1 3/8 puts us at the driver's door edge.
THey are mostly all 1 1/8" from the lower edge of the cab but some are up to 1/2" higher. Wonder if this is just factory quality control or lack thereof....it appears there was glue all the way up to under the rear window gasket at some point. Maybe a later cover someone installed or would that have been that way at the factory? Anyone have a picture of the factory cover installed with the grommets? Here's my rough diagram |
Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!
The carpet actually folds and then the brass clip is screwed into the lapped piece of carpet behind the overlapping piece. Thus still giving it a look similar to the new repops, but it sits higher of course. You don't see the brass clips once installed. Trevor
On a side note, thanks for the measurements, and you measured them from the edge of where the door meets that cab pillar (where the weatherstrip starts normally) right? Trevor |
