Glad to hear progress will be starting once again on the Yank-E! :D

Re: Building the damn yankee
here are the latest pics of my progress. passenger side cab corner and rocker panel fitting and welding. i have instaqlled these many times and i have yet to come accross a corner that fit perfectly. is there such an animal ? if so where do i get them?
note the sliver i had to remove off the cabcorner in order to fit http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00326.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00332.jpg i had to remove the flange and weld it back on for the corner to fit http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00331.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00328.jpg make no bones about it i'm no Barrett Jackson car builder. i just got some good grinders a decent welder and a little time.have any of you guys run accross the fittment issues i have with the cab corners? figured i'd ask. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00329.jpg |
Re: Building the damn yankee
Looking good. I don't think the corners ever fit well from what I've seen/heard...nothing a little work won't fix...
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
I've prolly installed a dozen cab corners and as many rockers; they're different every time. The last pair of rockers I changed had to be cut in the first 90 degree step(@ the door edge) and "rolled" out at the rear to line up with the door/cab corner and still leave w/strip room, whaddaya gonna do. Keep goin, it ain't broke till you can't fix it anymore.
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
Amen Phat Tony, if i can't fix it with a hammer, welder and grinder it's got to be an electrical problem! i could'nt wait to get home from work so i could get back out in the garage to work on the D.Y!

Good looking build Yankee!

Re: Building the damn yankee
WELL I'M DOWN TO THE LAST PIECE OF RUSTED METAL IN THE CAB. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M ALMOST DONE CUTTING AND WELDING REPAIR PANELS! I WAS JUST STARTING TO HAVE FUN.. LOL! FOR ALL YOU GUYS OUT THERE IN THE NICER CLIMATES TAKE A LOOK AND SEE... JUST HOW GREAT YOU GOT IT!!! I SUPPOSE I COULD HAVE TRAVELED AND BOUGHT A CAB. THIS TRUCK HAS GOT A HISTORY, IT WAS ORIGIONALLY BUILT FOR THE US NAVY IN 3/72 I HAVE ALL THE ORIGIONAL PLACKARDS AND EVEN ONE OF THE OLD GUYS AT WORK REMEMBERS THE TRUCK IN ITS HAYDAY.
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00337.jpg IF YOU HAVE ANY RUST OVER THE WINDSHIELD I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO HAVE IT REPLACED. MINE WAS JUST BUBBLING UP AND I GAVE IT THR SCREWDRIVER TEST. IF THE SCREWDRIVER GOES THRU REPLACE IT IMMEDIATLY. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00339.jpg THIS IS JUST AFTER OPENING IT UP. TONS OF LOOSE RUST!!! http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00340.jpg I EVEN FOUND YET ANOTHER RODENT NEST OVER THE WINDSHIELD ! http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00342.jpg MY SHOPVAC IS 5 LBS HEAVIER NOW! http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00345.jpg I USED MY AIR CHISEL TO POP OFF THE SPOTWELDS CAREFULLY AND CLEANED THEM UP WITH MY GRINDERS. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00348.jpg ALL CLEANED UP FOR SAND BLASTING AND POR 15 BEFORE I CLOST IT UP WITH THE NEW HEADER PANEL. THE DAMN YANKEE HAS BEEN GETTIN MUCH ATTENSION AS OF LATE.. ALL IS WELL WITH THE WORLD AGAIN!!! GOTTA KEEP ON TRUCKIN! PHIPP |
Re: Building the damn yankee
Man, don't have too much fun with that ;) gonna be right when it's done!!!
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
looking good. will you get this piece from a donor or is there repops out there?
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
sourkraut, there are repops out there for just under 100. bucks. what i cut out was just an initial cut there will be 1 more fittment cut after its blasted and treated with POR 15. i will take more pics during install. i could see daylight from the inside out. this is from the seam sealer drying up and cracking over the years. i picked up a new product at the Mid-Atlantic paint convention in Upper Marlboro MD i attended last month. i will provide info on it when i use it.
i git the word in friday that i'll needing to travel to yuma AZ this spring for work and i'm trying to drive out there and back and just maybe i could pick me up one of those non-rusted desert trucks i've always dreamed of owning or at least a few parts. hell i'll load my truck till the bumper drags ground. phipp out |
Re: Building the damn yankee
Has anyone done this patch panel? i'm on the fence on welding accross the roof or Epoxying that seam in. Then just weld the sides and the bottom .i'd hate like hell to ripple the roof from welding it. i know spot tacking minimizes distorsion, i'm just a little hesitant on doing it and messin it up. Any advice/encouragement would be welcomed at this point. :)
here are some pics of the roof gutter outer and inner. i removed old seam sealer, sand blasted, weld up pin holes, and POR 15ed the outer and inner areas then cut and fit the new peice. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00355.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00354.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00357.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00358.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00359.jpg |

Re: Building the damn yankee
looking good bro.....
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
Good work.
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
I'd be real tempted to glue the long seam; it'd be a booger to bodywork between the ribs in the roof if it warps on you, I can feel a kink in my neck just thinkin about it.
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
Well guys, i fianlly got up the balls to weld to roof panel in, plus the epoxy would take a couple of days to get here. i figured i'd have to go with what i know and weld it! i plug welded the slots and prayed real hard that i would'nt buckle the inner roof panel.a little swipe of z-grip bondo here and there and i think i'll be able to live with it.

|
Re: Building the damn yankee
Looks good man i might just do this on mine form prevention. Right now my roof is perfect. and the seam sealer is all there but id rather be safe than sorry
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
the little welder that could ol reliable
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00368.jpg So is that the setting that you use for the sheet metal welding? I have the same welder and Im having a hell of a time getting good penetration on butt welds. Good work on the project. Keep it up. |
Re: Building the damn yankee
spot welding yes C 4-5 rusty thin metal B-3 keep in mind i run .023 solidcore wire and gas. .030 is a bit too big for this little welder imho. and if you don't run gas your pissin in the wind. JMHO. pm me if you have any more questions and i'll give you my # and we can talk. i've been an Aircraft Certifyied Welder for the past 16 Years for the US Navy. Mark

Re: Building the damn yankee
WELL I'VE COMPLETED THE COWELS AND HAVE MOVED ONTO STRIPPING THE PAINT FOR BODYWORK AND A COAT OF ACID ETCH PRIMER BUT THE DY TOSSES ME YET ANOTHER CURVE BALL. I ATTEMPTED TO SAND THE ROOF DOWN TO BARE METAL AND THE P.O. MUST HAVE POR 15ED THE ROOF AND RUST HAD FORMED OVER THAT. IT'S A REAL MESS! THANKS TO BILL @ ATHEYS CLASSIC TRUCK PARTS I HAVE A NEW ROOF SKIN ON THE WAY. GONNA HIT THE SHOP AND DO SOME MORE CUTTING,GRINDING AND WELDING. I MAY EVEN SHAVE THE DRIP RAILS WHILE I'M AT IT. THE JURY IS OUT ON THAT ONE THOUGH, WE'LL SEE.

Re: Building the damn yankee
DO IT DO IT DO IT ;)
It is time consuming but I'm thrilled with how it looks now.... |
Re: Building the damn yankee
your moving right along, cant wait to see those big meets up under there. Keep at it.
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
I've cleaned a rusty roof to a "white" sandblast without warpage at about 60 psi, it was a '70 firebird but shouldn't be any different, I wouldn't think.

Re: Building the damn yankee
Saturday we got hammered with snow 16" of it! it was a good day to stay in the shop and work on the DY. looks like its 1 step forward and 2 steps back! i sliced the roof skin off for several reasons.1 i had wire wheeled the door seal off and a hole appeared over the right door. was worried that would be a problem down the road if i did'nt get all the rust cut out.
now i can see it all to cut out and por 15 it under the roof. by the time i got all that crap off the roof i figured it would get stretched somehow and look like sh*t when it was finished. plus now i got to shave the roof and doors like i wanted to. might as well while i'm at it :). got the cab off the frame too. now its time to rebuild the suspension up front blast por15 and paint the frame. got plenty to do. i hope assembly goes a little faster than the dissassembly. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00378.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00383.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00380.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00379.jpg |
Re: Building the damn yankee
Cool perspective....never seen the inside of the skin like that....your patch looks good too...
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
i could do without seeing that perspective too! what the hell ypu only live once. hell i hope i live long enought to drive it again!!!!:chevy: i'm ambitious i'm hoping to be smokin the tires in july! it would have been cheaper to buy another cab but it would have been 40 years old too.my cab will be painted inside and out... how anal is THAT???? LOL i saw the cab you have very tempting Johnathan...... phipp out
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
yeah, but since you're thinking of shaving the driprails and roof seam might as well finish up the one you have. The cab I have will make a great cab for someone doing a stock resto....or will be the cab on my next project....either way I'll be happy ;)
|
Re: Building the damn yankee
very nice. 16 inches of the white stuff, yahoo, means more time in the shop to work on that truck and closer to getting to smoking the hides in july. Keep on striving for the best my anal friend. LOL.

Re: Building the damn yankee
Any more progress???

Re: Building the damn yankee
Month later.... :chevy:

Re: Building the damn yankee
i bought a roofskin from atheys. 1 week turned into 9. NEVER AGAIN!! JB4short. was moving from nj to va at that time so i did'nt bother him. i went out Lynchburg Va to meet john and buy some parts from him in March. he is first class all the way! i can't wait to see his new website. he will get all my buisness from now on!!!!
http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0411001638.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0411001554.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...0411001803.jpg i've been working on the suspension and frame setup in the meantime. as you can see the pics above.also from the cab back im replacing the frame with 2x4 boxtubing and narrowing it by 4". also raising it by 4" this will level the chassis out with my 4.5 drop on the front. the adjustable coilovers will give me the 6" inches i need in the rear.my pal/wife is glassbeading my A Arms and my co-worker is doing my powdercoating gratis for building him a HD rack for his 48x48x72 new powdercoating oven. TODAY IS THE BIG DAY FOR MY ROOFSKIN INSTALL. I decided to epoxy my roof on. sokyclassics has an awsome tech article on doing a roofskin this way. i also decided not to shave the driprails also.i'm using 3m panel epoxy that the bodyshops use and evercoat maxim self leveling 2part seam sealer. this is the stuff the professionals use so i should be good to go. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00427.jpg i WILL have pics by the end of the weekend. |
Re: Building the damn yankee
cool! Suspension is looking B A D :metal:
Looking forward to cab pics. |
Re: Building the damn yankee
What a day! my good friend and talented tool and die maker Ben came over and gave me a hand with the roof skin.It could'nt have come out better imho.We had 1 small snag though. the clamps holding the rear roof seam did'nt work like they did in the sokyclassic truck instructions. we figured that out after the dry fit and the epoxy was already laid down. After a mad minute,i spot welded the seam in place and i'll grind them smooth in a couple of days after the epoxy is completely set.
to make things even better my wife/pal glassbeaded all 4 a arms and dustshields for me! for mothers day she wants to go out in the shop and work on our truck project! i gotta be the luckiest guy in the world! http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00440.jpg A arms after the misses worked them, yes they are in the livingroom! so they won't flash rust out in the shop.they will go to the powdercoaters monday at the latest. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00430.jpg i cut out and replaced a rusted section over the passenger door opening http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00428.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00433.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00432.jpg i sandblasted all the surface rust, taped off the bond area, and POR15ed the inner roof before putting the skin down. http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00438.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00437.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00443.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00442.jpg http://i364.photobucket.com/albums/o...3/DSC00441.jpg rear seam notice the spotwelds holding it in place till the epoxy is set. I'll grind them right out. |
Re: Building the damn yankee
