Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Alright guys now we are back on track... My dad got a killer deal on a warn 12000 lbs winch that is a few years old. It was hardly used and it had a little rust inside it but we tore it down cleaned it up and put her back together and she moves perfectly.
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../111109001.jpg We played around with the winch and managed to get it to fit nicely between the frame rails with a little trimming http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../111309006.jpg We debated many different ways to mount the winch while keeping the stock body/spring mount setup but came to the conclusion that it would be best to torch everything off and start fron scratch. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../111509009.jpg With a clean slate to start from we cut out a base plate to mount the winch to http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209002.jpg After that we made the front plate and added some holes. We also had to clearance the faceplate a little for the clutch lever. I painted the fairlead and polished the rollers http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209009.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209010.jpg |
Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
we added a few gussets on the inside, side plates, and the spring hangers which we moved back a 1/2 inch and down a 1/2 inch to help the shackle angle
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209031.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209016.jpg i played arond with some cardboard and we decided to add these gussets to the spring hangers and welded it all up. The next step is to add body mounts to the top of the spring hangers http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209017.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k.../112209033.jpg |

Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
We finally got a new cab with good floors to use as the front part of the extended cab and we'll use the back of the original one to add on as the extension. We also picked up a 60-63 chevy dash to play with.

Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Very nice! I'd say to a closer to stock style bumper modified a little bit. Those pre runner bumpers can make a truck look pretty ugly IMO. Great work!

Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Thanks for the feedback guys! Unfortunately my comp is messed up so I can't get pics up just yet. But to answer your question Joe, we used a series of hole saws.
|
Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Those holes look really clean for hole saws, I'm guessing you used a drill press huh? Looks very cool!!
Oh and I'm glad you found the GMC stuff you were looking for :metal: I would love some dimple dies, but those things are super spendy. :waah: |
Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Not if you know where to look. There is a seller on ebay that sells 7pc sets for reasonable. They're only 1018 steel but I've heard good reports on these. They have smaller sets also. Wish I had known about these guys before I bought mine.

Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
Yep, we got ours from Barbed Wire Off Road. Talk to Leah...great to work with. She talked us into the 4140 7 pc. drilled version, which works really well for what you can't get to the press.

Re: Project '66 Dirtrod: K-30 Extended Cab
We have been putting a quite bit of thought into how we wanted to go with the front bumper. We had been throwing the ideas of a pre-runner style bumper and a stock bumper around and we finally decided that since we already had a stock bumper on the GMC we would pull it off and play with ways we could make it work.
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09062.jpg It was pretty bent so we decided to play around with it in the press to see how straight we could get it. We also welded up the stock mounting holes to get a cleaner look http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09011.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09003.jpg After we got her pretty straight we played around and layed out a few holes http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09014.jpg We used a holesaw to cut the holes out then used the press and a set of dimple dies to flare the holes http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09084.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...2-13-09125.jpg |
