Use the force.;) Don't you just love body work. Mine is all taken apart so I can lay it flat to work on. I feel for ya. |
Re: Protrash Re-hash
Surprised to see this up here.......all I can say at this point is bondo-boogers and Ibuprofen.:dig:

Re: Protrash Re-hash
I feel your pain on sanding I'm doing the body on my cab now and everyday I make a mess just to clean it up and do it again tomarrow but getting closer. Nice progress.

Re: Protrash Re-hash
...... thanx s/b70. I'm working on my doors right now. Both are rust free but beat. They both had door check damage and the drivers door had a poorly repaired dent down low. I have the replacement panel to fix the door, but may wait until the rest of the sanding is done.
I'm finding the most difficult place to get straight is the 'indent' below the body line. It has a weird curve and I'm not sure how to approach it. So far I have been using my small Durablock to sand a small line about 1.5'' up. I then sand up to the body line from there. I then go back and sand down the lower portion. It seems to get it straight and doesnt leave any weird contour. Any body people feel free to lend a hint or two ;). |

Re: Protrash Re-hash
Thanks Alan. It sounds like I'm approaching it correctly. Hmmm, I must be getting the hang of this stuff:lol:!!!!!! I have just been using my regular 'fullsize' blocks for the upper portion and using the edge to get the curve. I rely on the length not to dig any strange grooves along the whole panel.

Re: Protrash Re-hash
A little guide coat never hurt anything. That 24" block is key to keeping the long straight lines- long and straight. And the close your eyes and feel trick works surprisingly well. Most of the time you'll feel stuff that you'll never be able to see.

Re: Protrash Re-hash
Wow guys, this is all voodoo to me. :mm:
I know I’ll have to face it and go through the learning curve soon (because the rust is insatiable), but I’m really not looking forward to it. First things first though, I need to buy the welding stuff and learn how to do the patch panel thing. My boy took a series of in-depth welding classes and from the look of his various coupons - got it down fairly well. Thanks again for the detail in your techniques and hard learned tricks. If you cant tell......its 110*. I also wanted to put out some general info that I discovered today. I bought power window regulators a couple years ago and I finally decided to scope 'em out. Looks cool and not too difficult at all....but here's what I found. I have the Electric Life kit for 64-66. You must drill to mount the motor assembly and it leaves 3 screws exposed thru the door!!!!. 2 will fall in the lower portion of the door and 1 falls in between the raised area and the door panel. I dont care that much, but I could see some people being very upset with it.
Decided to knock out the front clip with the 'bodymans palm pilot'...used some 180 and went to town. My front clip is in good shape and will take the least amount of work so I just decided to hit it and quit! Need to do the corners, edges and small work but it was nice to get the majority knocked down in about 2 hours. I'm trying to keep up with shortbed 70:lol:...not really. Put in some more effort on the doors and will be repairing the drivers door soon. Also got to use the round Durablock as Alan suggested in the 'indent' of the door and it worked nicely. I'll probably go back over that area of the bed before primer gets stuck. Enjoy. (Notice my Craigslist find= 36'' Maxx Air fan) |
Re: Protrash Re-hash
cool man, glad you seem to be having a cold front hanging around
that fan is a nice find  |
Re: Protrash Re-hash
You were outside today? You survived? Looking good. I will come by and check out the progress. Maybe roast the new Michelins...

|
Re: Protrash Re-hash
It gets down to 85 at about 3 am. It was still 99 at 9:45 pm last night.

Re: Protrash Re-hash
Back to the power regulators. Thanks for posting that alert on the screws. I am going to put in power windows too, so would appreciate any feedback on that kit, as well as others you may have looked at.
Since you are doing the body work now, I would WELD IN the screws, so that you end up with "studs" on the inside of the door! grind the outside smooth and proceed on with your filler, primer, and blocking. Only 104 degrees :devil:here this week, load up the trailer and come to Texas!! LOL. Looking good, don't rush the prep. 100% of a good finish is the prep. |
Re: Protrash Re-hash
it was 102 today here its probably about 80 now

Thanx Heater63.....I thought of welding in something, BUT.....I've already painted the interior:(......my thoughts are that the mounting is basically a triangle shape so it should be stable with only the 2 lowest screws. I will cover them with a speaker pod/contraption yet to be conceived. I dont like to second guess the manufacturer, but hey, it wouldnt be a hotrod if it was stock!!! The biggest problem with welding in the screws is that I dont know how I would rotate the entire power window assembly inside the door to tighten them:lol:. If you put studs on them, then you end up with nuts on the door. This may be hard to visualize....I will post more pics of them when I get time. |
Re: Protrash Re-hash
