Re: LS engine swap info

Just need the right fittings/clamp for the factory stuff to work |
Re: LS engine swap info
I used a Pierburg Pump from Turn Key Engine supply.
Low_84, I would just save the $ and ship it to Nelson Performance, they will do you right. Not that there is anything wrong with Jesse, he is a really nice guy, it's just that Nelson Perf has a very good rep here and on LS1Tech/Ls1truck. I went with Jesse and them, the work they did was fine for a stock tune, nothing more( all the stuff was eliminated and I wanted it on, like front O2's the CEL, and other sensors) the harness didnt look very clean at all. no instructions were with it at all. After 2-3 calls, I figured out what went where. Their communication is on the poor side though, very frustrating. I DID get what I paid for.Knowing now what I know, I would get an after market harness and a perf tune. Try Fuel Injection Connection (FIC) for your harness, they quoted me $508 for the engine harness with 4l60e, all relays and such for fuel pump, ac and stuff. If your putting your LSx in your 84, just get a tank from an 87 and put the Walbro 255 in it. Hope this all helps. |
Re: LS engine swap info
I use Current Performance out of Florida
|
Re: LS engine swap info
i have a question on the 4l60e,,,,apparently you "have" to have a speedo for the tranny to shift?? well here is the problem, my 84 has a broken analog speedo and i dont really want to deal with the speedo right now. i thought the computer shifted the transmission.
|
Re: LS engine swap info
You would need an electronic speedo, the truck will run and all without one, you will just be a target of Johnny Law without.
You can switch the tail housing out to a 700 ( or aftermarket) but I think that is expensive. You also can purchase an electronic speedo from many different guage companies, takes a bit to get them configured but it isnt all that bad. The trans shifts the trans, the computer just monitors it and adjusts the rpm and or timing if needed, I really dont think it cares what the trans is doing. |
Re: LS engine swap info
yeah, or i could use gps,,,hillbilly style,,i just want to get it on the road.
so where should i send it...to current or nelson.. current 450 for harness rework 175 for factory tune nelson 450 for harness rework 150 for factory tune one thing i like about current is there fuse/relay block they include |
Re: LS engine swap info
Whats this lokar shifter cable i hear about? you cant just put a lq4/4l80e and be good? how much is it?
also, has anyone tried blackbear for tuning? what do you do, just send them your pcm and harness? will they do a performance tune for the same price instead of a stock tune? |
Re: LS engine swap info
also, if the motor i get just has harness/pcm and altenator, am i screwed with no power steering pump? what else am i going to need?

Re: LS engine swap info
I have a question on the 5.3 truck motor.
is the alternator, ps pump, water pump, starter and brackets the same for the 1999 and on motors....say will accessories off a 04 work on a 99? thanks, jason |
Re: LS engine swap info
Thanks for the info. just got a 5.3 vortec with 50k miles for 500$. im putting it in my daily driver, may the carb and my knowledge for it go straight to hell. Vegas heat sucks for the performance.

Re: LS engine swap info
I'm sure this has been covered in another thread, but here's a reminder about oil pressure and water temp fittings. The metric-to-npt fittings are available at speedwaymotors.com. They might be found cheaper somewhere, but they shipped quick and fit perfect:

Re: LS engine swap info
1973-1974 was when they started installing cats on vehicles right during the gas crunch era. In texas and I got this from the DMV if it was not installed as a factory item it does not need to be present on the vehicle at the time of inspection. So if it is 78 for sure or newer at least one set of cats has to be in place on the vehicle. Went through this with the inspections station on my pontiac firebird. They did check to make sure that all required vacum lines were in place on the engine. What few there were lol. Working on getting that car back through inspection for the year having some brake issues that are holding me back atm. Sean

Re: LS engine swap info
wasn't it the 1975 models? At least for GM?

Re: LS engine swap info
what about throttle cable setups.....1999 5.3 in 84 shorty??
|
Re: LS engine swap info
68 custom,
You might be right IO know it was within that times range. Cable setups for a 5.3 you will probably need an 04 or earlier engine unless you want to piece it together I know lokar and a couple of other companies make cable setups for that and ls series engines. I have one for an unused tpi conversion atm. Let me look around I might have the ls lokar setup laying around somewhere. Sean |

After checking out the above mentioned straight pipe that looks like a catalytic converter, I read the disclaimer at the bottom. Hilarious!

Re: LS engine swap info
Hey thealien, thanks for helping out here....i'm havin a problem with my lq4 motor it has the single fuel rail system u speak of (2005) from a gmc savannah went to napa, thought the oem fuel filter would have a return, but it's just 1 in 1out so now i'm so confused...it wont start unless you are spraying starter fluid in the intake -----& i dont have the mass air hooked up any help would be very appreciated thx dave
=Thealien;3686299]Fuel system (any chance a mod can move this post up?) The LS engines require 58-60 pounds pressure at the fuel rails. Older fuel rails had a regulator on the rails and there is a feed and return on these engines. On the later fuel rails there is only the feed on the rail. You need to have something like the filter regulator shown below to return the excess fuel to the tank. Some of the tanks these engines came with did this internally in the tank. Corvette filter/regulator I don't know how long this will last but a decent deal on the regulator/filter and he will take offers for less I am told GF822 Lots of people use Walbro external pumps Walbro external pumps and fittings Dorman quick disconnects for GM fuel line Dorman 5/16ths Dorman 3/8ths Russel AN quick disconnects Russel 3/8ths Russel 5/16ths Don't have a way to make the GM quick disconnect? Re: LS engine swap info
still confused! what part number is this for? fuel filter? & y is the stock filter only no return, and 1 more do i need return....im not really an engine guy so help explain please something doesnt make sense in my pee brain
|
Re: LS engine swap info
That part number I am guessing is the filter with return line attachment to work with your engine. The return line routes fuel back to the gas tank when the fuel injection rails have reached full pressure. Helps to save the fuel pump from too high of pressures. And other things as well. Not a boned up on these items yet working on it quickly tho since I will be buying my new gas tank this fall and installing it after the bed is completely repainted with new oak wood. :D late 2004 and early 2005 they simplfied the fuel rails due one part problems with the regulators plus high pressure requirements. So what you probably grabbed a hold of was one of the early 2004 models that still had the rail regulator in place rather than the newer filter regulator assembly.

Re: LS engine swap info
sdwolff98 so to clarify...i need that filter with the in/out and return to the gas tank?? if so, then ok but i dont understand why my set up is just like the van it came out of single line fuel rail(inlet) single in and out filter no return
