Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I know what you mean about that speedo redo kit, I have it sitting on my desk and it looks like crap....let me know if you have success with photo shop. Also where did you get those led's for your dash as you can tell I am in the middle of redoing a 66 GMC also......Kieth :gmc2:
ps I am redoing my instrument cluster right now and am going to try chrome paint first to see how it turns out, thought I would run pinstripe tape the color of the outside of the truck on the small chrome bezel all the way around the dash panel and I just scored a sun 5000rpm tach.....still looking for a clock---gave up on a bat-ometer they do not exist. Hi Kieth, I got the LED's from ebay. This is the seller that I got mine from eBay They have different colors and will combine shipping ;) I used some scrape Lexan to make the fillers to insert in place of the original indicator lenses. I used and 1 1/8" hole saw to cut them out and then the LED fit right into the pilot hole for the hole saw :smoke: I have been working a lot of hours, so not had much time to work on the truck. hopefully tomorrow I'll get time to work on the dash :ito: I'll post pics soon Tony |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I found some time today to work on the gauges. I was not happy with the gauge decal kit I got from Classic Parts, so I made my own :metal:
I wanted to do something different, but keep the original look to some extent. Instead of the factory white letters on black, I decided to black letters on tan to match my interior. I think it looks awesome with the black bezel. What do you think? http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1465.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1466.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1467.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1468.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1470.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1471.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1475.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1477.jpg I painted the backplates for the fuel and temp gauges and they need to cure. I should have it done on Tuesday since I will be home watching the roofer's install a new roof on the house. More pics to come ;) Tony |

AZ66GMC - how do you like the '05 chevy seats? |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Quote:
Thanks man :metal: I love the seats. I wish they could go back one or two more notches on the sliders, but at 6' I'm still comfortable. I have a tilt column that helps some. I still need to mount the center seat after I remove the gas tank in the cab. I got a rear tank that I hope to install in the next few weeks. Tony Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Tony, your build is coming along great. :metal:
I am at decision time. Continue with the LWB leaf frame build that I have boxed and added 3/4 ton disk suspension front and rear, or use the trailing arm SWB frame with the 6 lug disk/drum combo that I recently picked up and swap cabs. OR, do the insane... add another truck to my build list and build both... The question is, do I really need 2 SWB trucks and a 3/4 ton plus the suburban??? Your build does look good, simple and sane. That's why I keep popping in... seeking a little sanity.. |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Hey Tony, how did you make the tan gauges?I think they look killer.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Thanks Chris. I would love to go wild on this truck and do some cool things, but funds are limited and I just want to drive this thing ;). Even as it sits, it's great to cruise in, but I want to do small upgrades that won't take it out of commission for long periods. Of coarse, if I had a second 66, one of them would get the full treatment if I had the money :metal:
Hi Cort, I actually made a decal from clear shipping label paper by scanning the original instrument back plate into photoshop and cleaning it up for printing. I painted the backplate with tan paint and then cleared them after installing the decal ;). The hardest part is getting the decal on straight as it sticks too well... Thanks for the comment :metal: Here are a few more pics that I haven't posted yet. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1488.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1489.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1499.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1496.jpg Tony |

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
WHOA BABY! do I know about shoestring budget builds Tony.
I search the countryside for parts that I can afford and time being the only thing on my side, I actually find good deals. :metal: Not too long ago I was tripping over TH200-4r transmissions (the grand national type 4spd autos) and now that I want one I can't find one to save my butt. SBC motor parts are so freaking cheap that I question my sanity at times for using my Pontiac motor and I need to pull out the dyno sheet to remind myself why I did. :uhmk: It is fun to drive these trucks that's for sure. I sometimes wish I could just work on my truck until I get sick of working on it but I don't have an extra two years to try that. |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I finally got the dash back together :metal:

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I got my cam and lifters swapped out yesterday and just finished breaking it in. I used the original valve springs for the break in, so now I just need to swap them out with the new ones when the engine cools down :metal:
Once this is done, I moving on to the gas tank relo project :sumo: Tony Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I got my cam, lifters, springs and chain swapped out last weekend :metal:
I made a video of it running... It's nothing too special, just a Comp Cams High Energy 268. It sounds good enough for me and has more power :smoke: http://youtu.be/HkW7C-UOOMA Tony |

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Thanks Dave :metal:
It's been awhile... A long while... Have been working a lot and remodeling the house after a water leak in the attic. :waah: I got a new aluminum radiator for fathers day and installed it last week. I'll post pics and details this weekend. I'm also cleaning up my M/T valve covers and will install them this weekend. They look killer  IMO ;) I'll post more soon :metal: Tony Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Those valve covers are timeless.
What's the specifics on that radiator? Who made it, how much, etc... |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Hey Shaky, I forgot that part in the post...
I got it from eBay (engineered products) it was $230 shipped http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_3321wt_948 It was not a direct drop-in. The top and bottom tank are squared off more than the stocker so I had to spread the radiator tabs open more to get it to fit... Other than that, it was a decent fit. It's a two row, but with 1" tubes like the top of the line BeCool and others. I dropped about 23 degrees in temp with the swap :metal: So far it's a good swap for me. Time will tell on how long it will last... Tony Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
What year truck did that brake booster and master cylinder come off of? How hard was it to install beside getting the mounting bracket?

Re: My 66 GMC LWB

I got them from the local "pick-n-pull" from a 83 Chevy 4x4. I grabbed the brake lines and proportioning valve along with the pedal rod. I went on a 50% off sale and paid $30 for everything. It bolted up to the 2 factory M/C holes with out any additional brackets. I drilled out the firewall for the bottom 2 holes on the newer M/C. You can see the top 2 holes were not used (has a total of 6 mounting holes). I used my original pedal rod and cut/welded it to the new rod which kept the adjustability by retaining the original threaded part. It took about 4 hours to install it and then a couple more reworking the brake lines. BIG difference compared to the original single pot M/C... It will put you into the dash if your not wearing the seat belt when you slam on the brakes... Takes some get'n used too... . Posted via Mobile Device |

Thanks Zane :metal: I installed my rubber bed mat that I got for Xmas. It's for a '73-86 long bed Chevy/GMC. It's not exact, but it covers 99% of the wood ;) http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1745.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1747.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1749.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1751.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1753.jpg . |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
I also filled my dash so that I can install my Vintage Air controls and A/C vents. Since the PO butchered the radio slot, I figured that I might as well cut it all out and fill it solid, then go back and cut out what I need... :waah:
Before; http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1402.jpg Cut, cut away.... http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1736.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1740.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1743.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1754.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1756.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1761.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1778.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1792.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i2...C/IMG_1789.jpg . |
Re: My 66 GMC LWB
Very clean nice looking patch repair on the dash. Thanks for the info on the brake booster. I went to LKQ this past weekend and they had the 50% off sale going on. I couldnt find a decent looking booster to get. Everything was already about stripped to the bones.

Re: My 66 GMC LWB
You are far more brave than I. Not sure I am confident enough to cut my dash like that !! Nicely done though.
What are those silver clamps with the wingnuts holding your patch on? I think this is the first time I have seen those.... I just looked at your Sonoma over on CarDomain, very nice there too! I have an 03 stepside for a daily driver and I love it! |
