before i bought my 51, i never went to harbor freight this much before.. now, im there atleast a couple times a month. their cheap but effective cutoff wheels, flap discs, cheap grinders, etc.. have been invaluable in getting my truck project going. |

Thanks for all the compliments and advice. I've never heard of 90% of the tools you guys just showed me. I'll look into them later this week. Thanks again.

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I looked for a pedal rod extension all over town and ended up finding one online but it was like $40. I barely had to go forward. The pedal actually worked perfect right on the edge of the rod.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0213.jpg I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this would be a bad idea? It just seemed to make sense, but I could be overlooking something. I just stacked two washers and welded them together. Then ground them down to make a flat side and welded it to another pair of washers. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0214.jpg It fit really well. Any suggestions as to why this wouldn't be safe? It feels really sturdy to me and it bolted in perfectly. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0215.jpg |

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Not sure I would do that, being that is the most important part of your whole baby! I would cut the rod, find some tubing that has the same inside diameter. I would make the tubing overlap an 1" on each side, weld it up good and even if 1 weld broke, you could still stop the truck! Just me thinking overkill!

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Great progress for a first timer.
I would agree that you really should look around and find the right part for your braking system. You don't want to find out in a panic stop if your welds hold or not. |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I'd cut the rod and lengthen it with a piece the same diameter.
|
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I'm with bluejeep. You can also put on an exterior sleeve for extra strength. Those washers will flex over time.
|
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Two things I refuse to cut and splice... Brake systems and steering systems.... all others are fair game!
I would seriously consider rethinking the double washer idea... if you had to... lay it out on a piece of 1/4" plate and drill and cut the part out... no joints, no welds... and always overbuild... you have no idea how much stomp pressure you'll put on that in an emergency or fatigue failure over time... Something else to consider... that rod isn't supported and will flex up and down given the opportunity... with a connector such as that, it will rotate up or down as that rod flexes and you won't get the horizontal push on the booster you're looking for. Better safe than sorry! My 2 cents... Ted. PS If you are using the S10 brake booster and the S10 pedal and support... it should bolt right up! |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't sure about the homemade extension, it looks pretty unanimous to get rid of it. I was more worried about it rotating like Thadious mentioned that the actual welds.
I think I found a double clevis that will do the trick and won't require any welding, that way I know I won't have to worry about it. It's rated at 3900lbs. I'm assuming my dinky welds weren't rated at that. Thanks again for all the quick replies. |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Along with what Thadious said, what are we missing? I'm assuming the pedal and the booster aren't out of the same truck, is that true? On mine, I noticed that the 95 s10 booster wouldn't work with the 90 pedal, so I used everything off the 90 and it worked as expected.
|
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
The booster is from the blazer that I got the rear axle out of. The pedal assembly I had to go pull from an 89 s-10, I didn't get the booster out of it. I assumed the blazer booster would be the same.

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Finished getting my shifter installed. I went with the Lokar Nostalgia Shifter 15". I wish I could go back and tell my geometry teacher that I actually used the pythagorean theorem. . . ha.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01316.jpg I sat it in there just for some pics. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0224.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0223.jpg I welded a lip around the edge so I can just bolt it to the floor and make for easy access in case there is something that goes wrong with the neutral safety switch on the shifter. |

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I'm trying to find a spot to mount the s10 e-brake. I don't know if I want it to stay here or if I should get a hand operated handle instead of the s10 foot e-brake.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0231.jpg My cousin came over and we started trying to figure out where we are going to put the computer, battery, etc. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0230.jpg It's about to snow and sleet here so I moved some stuff around so I could park my car in the garage again. I moved the bed onto the frame and snapped a pic just to get an idea of what it would look like. I'll have to move the bed floor up a couple inches before I'm done. I'm definitely glad I lowered the cab another two inches a few weeks ago. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/IMG_0229.jpg |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
For my ebrake... I did use the S10 one, but I had to remake the arm itself for length and to look right. The computer I mounted above the heater on the passenger's side with the wiring going down the right side and out through the firewall there. Of course it helped going with a Painless Harness for the engine and chopped up the S10 harness for the chassis and ABS.
Cheers, Ted. |

hey i'm wanting to put the 5.3 in my truck also but i was wondering what your plans are as far as a fuel tank?

I'll have to double check all of that, but thats what I remember off the top of my head. My cousin is the brains helping me out, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue. Lots of info on here if you're doing an s-10 LSx swap. http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f213/l...mation-390967/ |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
yeah i am currently working on a 47 gmc and my brain has never been this worked before in my life. There is so much thinking that goes into these ground up restorations and then adding in electrical just takes it to a new level. im excited to put a 5.3 in it though

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I need some help on this one, I've considered about a thousand different paint and color options. I've been considering "Legend Lime Green" that was on the 05-06 F**d Mustangs and maybe some small gray or black pinstriping.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...nroyd/llgm.jpg But after I saw the "Mocha Steel Metallic" on the newer GM models I've kind of been jumping back and forth. I know I definitely want some pinstriping done afterwards and I'm not sure how great it would look with the brown. I know kustombrad http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=320546 did some stripes with brown and it looked great. Any input appreciated. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...yd/equinox.jpg If it helps, I'm planning on these wheels. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...oyd/wheels.jpg |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Hey Groyd, I like the Mocha Brown the best, but that is just my preferance. I love the wheels.
How's the wiring going? |

The wiring had been about halfway done for about a week and a half. We should hopefully finish it up this week. (Fingers crossed) |
ABS Delete
I got rid of all the ABS stuff and put a proportioning valve that mounts to the master cylinder/booster. I looked everywhere trying to find fittings on the s10forum for the proportioning valve. A guy at Autozone ended up letting me go to the back with my parts and just fit everything. Here is what I ended up with. I got the bracket and lines that attach the MC to the prop valve from waylayedinc.com, here is an image of the sizes and the mount.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...kit__26821.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2.../PropValve.jpg I don't know if anyone else is going this route, but if so these part numbers might save some time at Autozone. I used adapters for the fronts PAA-R350 (#561007) 3/8"-24 to 1/2"-20 PAA-R340 (#561006) 3/8"-24 to 7/16"-24 I then used inverted flares to attach the factory s10 lines to the adapters to the proportioning valve. BLU-4C (#845016) BLU-5C (#845017)? http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01321.jpg The lines need to be cleaned up and moved around a little, but you get the idea. This may be a bunch of wasted info, but it might help somebody save a little time.:metal: |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
Man you saved my life, I have needed that diagram for 2 weeks. I switched all my '85 s10 brake lines over to newer bigger lines because my s10 was a rust machine and I wanted to be safe. I know I could have taken my brake lines to the AP store but now I don't have to. THANK YOU

Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I moved my e-brake to the floor on the drivers side.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01320.jpg PO had a bunch of lights in the dash. I cut them out for the A/C controls, and moved the wiper controls in the choke slot. I'll fill the wiper spot later this week. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01327.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01342.jpg The wife said she wouldn't set foot in the truck if it didn't have A/C. I had to cut up the inner fender to mount my battery and cut out a space for my A/C compressor. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...d/DSC01325.jpg Seems like I end up grinding off about three times the amount that I weld. I'm not getting the hang of this craft yet. The cheapo welder doesn't help either. |
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
I like that brake handle location that looks sharp, and I was wondering just this morning where I was gonna put the battery, your idea looks like a good one that I may have to do myself. Looks good.
|
Re: Be Gentle. . . I'm an Amateur.
My wife said the same thing -
Still not a compressor in my truck LOL! I don't blame you though. Those OK summers get HOT. The layout looks nice and clean too. Don't sweat the grinding. It's all part of the learning process. You're doing great! |
