Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Nice thing is, if you don't like it on the 92, you can always shift it over to the 4x4.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Exactly, Bill. That's what I love about owning multiple '88-'98 trucks lol. Swappable parts! And, a lot of my friends drive them, so I already have the grille off the the '88 parts truck sold for $40 and my dad sold the trans for $250. So think here, we payed $350 for the whole truck. Trans is gone for $250. That leaves $100 in it. I'm gonna get the grille sold for $40. That's $60 left in the truck. We're saving the motor, which is a 350 with a blown head gasket, we're turning the back half of the frame into a trailer, saving the front suspension for parts, I'm gonna save interior crap, and the cab and middle of the frame are getting scrapped. By the time we're done, we won't have any money left tied in it. The engine we're gonna save for down the road to fix up and rebuild.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Can't believe I didn't think of this before! The '88 parts truck that I'm pulling the brush guard off of, has the original interior. My '92, has the Southern Comfort conversion interior with the wood. So, I'm going to strip the interior of the '88, and use it in my '92 and elminate the wood trim! :) :metal:

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
That bench will make it more awkward to get in and out of the extended cab area. You going to eliminate the rear seat then too?

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Doesn't look to bad with the cow kicker on the front end!

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Haha thanks a lot Bill. That's about 75% of the reason I put it there! Lol

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Somthing I did when I ran a grille guard was mount it so it didn't stick out so far at the top.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Got a few things done over the past few days!!!
Built a new pickup bed trailer out of that busted up '88 Chevy bed, and frame. Took out the stock rear end as a spare for my '92, that and the original truck springs are now under my dad's 2000 Z71. Anyway, we built and welded together a mini-frame, welded trailer spring shackles to that, and bolted in a trailer axle with a small 5-lug Ford pattern, and then welded that mini-frame to the chassis under the truck bed. And today we picked up an 8-lug 10,000 lb axle that needs a new spindle on one side, so we are going to fix that, cut it down a few inches so it isn't to wide, and find some 8-lug wheels. Also put stock tail-lights back in my '92. Anyway, here are the pics: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0290.jpg Stock tail lights: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0292.jpg Old tail lights out of my truck are in the trailer. Wheels under the trailer are 15 in. steel Ranger wheels, with 30x9.50/15 tires. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0293.jpg Always helps to add some strength. Center tongue, and a piece of angle iron for a cross-member. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0294.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0295.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0296.jpg Lol...it just looks like one long ass Chevy truck if you look at the right angle. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0297.jpg http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../Photo0299.jpg Let me know what you guys think. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Nice job on the trailer!

But, the flatbed trailer is also the best one we ever built. It's the back 16.5 feet of a semi trailer, and we completely re-enforced the frame and supporting, and made it a tilt bed. |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Okay guys, I've been running a thought through my head, and I need an answer to a question. Will the shape of a '95-'98 door panel, line up with a '88-'98 dash, or will it look funky?
|
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
there is some pics on here somewhere of that. it doesn't look to bad IMO. most people would never notice. however anyone on this board would pick it up right away. not too bad looking though. why are you wanting to switch?

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Thanks Mike.
Other than that one little piece, it doesn't look bad. I was thinking about going to our local salvage yard and hunting down a '95-'98 truck with power locks/windows and red door panels, so I can put them on my truck. I like the look of '95-'98 door panels better than '88-up. |

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
Nice! I always have to do a double take on how well the front end blends into the trucks paint scheme.

Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
From looking at the photos...... Isn't it nice to have so much room at the house to do projects as this? If I had a 4 car garage, I'd restore my '68 Firebird Convertible.

I got bored, so here's a few update pics and then a few pics I took just because.
Painted my hitch; receiver and ball hitch. http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...54167467_o.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...63588303_o.jpg Put a new sticker in the back window. Gotta love them racks! :D http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...18490902_o.jpg And here's a few just 'cause... http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...16808416_o.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...50370071_n.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...67246964_o.jpg |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
A few updates. First, swapped bumpers. I took the brush guard off of the GMC and swapped it with the push bumper on the Crew Cab. I think it looks shnazzy
http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...00657595_n.jpg http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...14924703_n.jpg Next, was the removal of all 4 centercaps. They were old, plastic, and breaking. So I said to hell with 'em...pulled the caps, painted my front grease caps red, and all 4 of my valve stems red. http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...97346748_n.jpg http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...20892831_n.jpg And lastly, the obvious fact that my tonneau cover is gone. Took it off for the time being...it'll probably find itself back on the truck later. http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...73542166_n.jpg |
Re: '92 GMC Southern Comfort Daily Driver
A few new shots out in the middle of the day in the sun. I plan on giving the entire truck a bath and cleaning the interior soon.

In with the new...tomorrow. 60/40 cloth bench with center console out of a '95-'98. After some cleaning tomorrow, along with some modifications to make the damn thing fit right, it'll be in the truck. |
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra C1500 Shortwide DD/Project
I think you will enjoy that 60/40 split bench a lot better, I had one in my old truck, looking for one to put in my 00 GMC.
|
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra C1500 Shortwide DD/Project
I already do. I got it bolted in today, and it is so much more comfortable than those torn up 20-year-old leather buckets
|
Re: 1992 GMC Sierra C1500 Shortwide DD/Project
My old leather buckets are gonna go in the '94. I'm gonna take the console back out and put the middle seat back in. Mainly so there's a center seat for my sister's kids during Ohio trips

Thought I'd go ahead and post these before I head off to sleep. A couple pictures I took while cleaning my cab. First one is my little bulldog that has been in every truck I've owned since 2007.
