mine was installed by professionals also and looks like renokeens , im went out and checked and they didnt have the second layer rubber over the pinchweld im using a butter knife and fixing it , , lol

The trim was actually a repo by Precision, unfortunately it can no longer be produced (long story). We had a couple of sets still around so that's what we used.

We're fortunate to have Greg on our team who has 20 years experience in the auto glass field. This is his son's truck which is why we were able to get this done. Sadly, auto glass techs (the pros) doesn't guarantee a good install as some don't have the experience necessary with these older rope in type installs, so it's important to find one that comes recommended or that has a good reputation.

I'd like to see a shorter version of this made into a sticky? Maybe the video and some tips. We should keep it short and simple.

Can anyone recommend a known experienced installer in the SoCal area, eastern LA or western San Berdo counties preferred? I've called around and can't find anyone that will say they have experience with these old dogs, just that they can do it.

I'd like to know as well...
My burb and PU both need windshield gasket work, and everyone around the SW Riverside county area that I have talked to refuse to touch the glass install on these trucks.

The 67-72 Chevy and GMC trucks were one of two windshields I always installed from the top first. (The other was the old Jeep Wagoneer) The tight upper corners make it very difficult to get even pull on the gasket if you start at the bottom.

at 16.13 after talking about the secondary lip ,the hook tool pulls the rubber next to the glass............do not do that at home .leave that trick to the pros. great job n video

I'm having a different kind of problem. Last year I had a new windshield installed by safelite, with the trim. The installer was experienced and got it in without too much problem, but it was as if the windshield was a bit too narrow. The fit top and bottom seemed good, but it was loose on the sides. The gasket will slide side to side on both sides. He said it might seat in after a while, but they would cover it if it didn't. One other problem was the glass had ripples in it and seemed to be rounded from top to bottom more than the OEM glass, which was pretty flat. Safelite branded glass.

I gave it a year of driving off and on, but it never tightened up and it leaked, so I called them back. He came with another safelite windshield, but figured it would be a waste of time, so they ordered another brand for it and came back a few days later. The glass was smoother, but fit almost the same as the other one. Maybe just a bit tighter, but I can still slip my fingers under the gasket by the windshield frame post. The gasket does not bunch in the corners, it seems to fit the glass well. It just won't fit tight to the side frame posts.

Are the installers doing something wrong? Is the glass not wide enough or have enough curve back into the frame? I just don't understand. They tried 2 different gaskets, same results.

I didn't do any massaging of the windshield area in my body work. Didn't even replace rockers. I took the old glass out myself and it was a nice tight seal all around. What could be the cause of this?

;) Idea: why don't we put a post or thread together that shows sucessful/unsecessful installs, i.e. type of gasket, trim and glass manufacture. Brief description on install: technique - top/bottom first, type of rope/cord. hook tools, sealent... Maybe we can nail down the exact ingredents to make the install work to perfection. I know mine still leaks and the percision gasket has defects. Pictures to come.

Update on mine today......after 3-1/2 hours the installer is taking the glass, vinyl and trim back to their shop to WATCH THE VIDEO and see what they can learn :lol: I bet I'm going to have to do it myself to get it right. Stay tuned.

Windshield (FY) + Precision gasket (71-72 w trim) + OEM 71-72 trim + top first w rope no sealant = success (<1 hr install: EASY)

* same arrangement save for repro trim (both 71-72 AND <70 with correct matching Precision gaskets) did NOT work despite four attempts by three different installers - the trim would not conform to the gasket - beware repro trim

Just one last thing that wasn't addressed in the video is bedding compound. We did not use any and have done a water test with no leakage to the weatherstrip. However it can't hurt to add a little to give more confidence for a water tight seal.

Great video... I wish I had seen it BEFORE the install on my son's '70 GMC Sierra Grande.

After bartering a deal on the windshield install, we contacted GlassDoctors. They informed us that they didn't carry the windshield gasket, and said we would need to furnish one.

We first purchased a windshield gasket from LMC for our application (wide, deep stainless trim). They sent the one listed in their catalog. It arrived, and was for the narrow trim. NICE... Called LMC, talked to a clueless customer service rep, and decided to take the forum members advice and get the Precision brand. Contacted Derek, and a few days later we have the correct gasket on the doorstep.

The GlassDoctors comes by my house to do the install (the truck is partially apart right now). As he is getting out of the truck, I hear him mumbling something about this install is going to be the end of the world... or something to that effect. I tell him that I overheard him, but he quickly informs me that he is not looking forward to this install.

He does the rope install using a lot of Silicone spray around the gasket. Then, he installs the stainless and places the windshield in the opening bottom first. Pulls, the rope out and everything looks fine except across the top edge. The trim has pushed out and is not seating in the opening. The guy says to park the truck in the sun for a few days and it should just "pop" in. Huh? Like magic?

Well, after two days of 100+ degree Tennessee sunshine, the trim is still not seated. Called GlassDoctors, they said they would send someone back out. Well, the first guy refused to come back out. They sent another guy who actually had experience with these old trucks and the windshield install. He actually pulled the windshield completely back out, re-roped it and sprayed it heavily with soapy water. This time, he started at the top and worked down. 30 minutes later, perfect.

Our stainless was a little bent on one edge near the top, but the gasket fit really nice. Bottom line, get a quality gasket, name brand windshield (ours was PPG), clean the channels on your stainless and your windshield opening on the cab thoroughly, and get an experienced installer.

Derek at Precision actually contacted me about a week later to see how the install went. Talk about customer service! I would use Precision for any gaskets needed from now own. Great company, great information, and great feedback. What else could you ask for?

I had my windshield installed today. I supplied all the parts, Pilkington glass, original trim that I had polished, precision gasket. 30 minutes and they were done, looks great, no ripples, trim lays nice and flat. I'm very happy. Safelite did the install for $100, they said they have lots of old dogs that can install these.

Ran into a snag with the original rear window. The gasket is about an 1 & 1/2" to big. They said sometime they can install a little big but this is way to big.

we put our rear window in last night with the Precision gasket fit beautiful !! Trying to figure out if i am brave enough to attempt the front one or not ???? The video sure makes me think i can ...LOL

Update 2.........
After about a year and a half and several pro attempts I finally have a windshield install worthy of the rest of my truck. Precision gasket, PPG glass and OEM trim. Installers watched the video, started from the top down and Bingo!
I would like to thank the guys at Precision for the video and the input to this thread.
Feels good to have this behind me!

Just finished installing all new precision seals (rear window, doors, wing windows and windshield). All went well. I did soak the windshield gasket in hot water for about 2 hours prior to installing that (around 62f outside). Didn't use any lubes or sealers. The last two pics show a slight pucker in bother outside corners but that will relax. After it relaxes a bit I will put a butyl rubber sealant from the top corner to the cowl. If these trucks leak that is the area it will usually come from.

mine is my OEM repolished , i have a brand new Precision brand front trim still in the box that i bought in case we couldnt get all of the dings out of my original trim !
