Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Well im still working on the hood and passenger side fender...Put some bondo on a few of the dings last night. WIll probably do a lil more tonight if I can but this weekend is a wash. My friends bachelor party is this weekend so ill be gone....
Eitherway still tons to do...Need to lube up the speedo wire before i reinstall the rest of the interior. Need to replaced the rear tail seal so the trans stops leaking....(and pray thats the last leak) Need to double check the trans filler tube as I believe its leaking some too After that more patching....Driver fender needs patched and so does the bed... I litterally have tons...Need install my relay harness, my new pedals, patch the cab corners, sand and prime etc etc |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
I hear ya, I have so far to go on my truck, but I just go outside and tinker with it for a few hours everyday, one day it'll be there.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
yeah i try to every day but i work this 9 - 5 and then i need to hit the gym and such...Si little light to hit it every day. Usually I get most my work done on saturdays
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
I know what you mean, on the weekends I usually like to get some buddies over to drink some beer and wrench on things.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
my buddies suck and know less then i know..... Plus they probably wouldnt come over for beer either
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
hey if you were closer id help you out on that beast keep up the work man least you got one thing up on me (tempting welding) glade your rebuilding this one
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
:waah: sounds terrible man LOL
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
haha! Dude all you have to do is get on amazon or harbor freight and pay $100....Flux core welder...It aint pretty but after a few tries and a lil grinding it will do the trick

Re: Project 78 High Sierra
You gotta start somewhere, but I must say I wouldnt trade my digital miller MIG for anything!
I actually thought about buying one of those little cheapie harbor freight flux cores just to try out. |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
well i dont have a ton of money to buy an expensive mig so i just went with it...Plus i didnt want gas..I mean i store it in a spare bed room
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
LOL reminds me of building a small block chevy on the back porch, and having a craftsman toolbox in my bedroom. Im sure those small welders will do the job just fine. What size wire are you running?
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
.035 and .030......I believe.....
Dude I have a small room full of tools and parts,,,,, Ive bought small 18v impact, 5lb air compressor, welder, sockets, extensions, air flange/hole punch, and tons more...I work on most the parts on my back porch and the truck i work on in the driveway...Haha So yes this is very similar |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
I must say im jealous of your driveway. Right now we're working on building a shop but until then im in the dirt. I moved and went from having a 40x80 shop to nothing. not even a damn carport LOL
most of my sheetmetal welding i use .030 or even .023. It dont take much for sheetmetal. |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
so is it better to use .030? I just kinda bought ti and started welding with the .035 i bought with it. I have a spool of .030 that came with it as well.... Kinda a newb when it comes to welding...They look horrible when i weld except spots and i burn through a lot even though i keep in on min and have the speed at like 4
This welder only handles .030 or .035 so..yeah My driveway is only 9ft wide but it is what it is..No carport here either.... One day lol |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
go with the .030.
Get you some scrap sheetmetal and start running beads. My buddy is a certified code welder and taught me everything he knows, I can give you some pointers. |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Yeah i would greatly appreciate them....If you look at my fender wells you can see the crap beads i do....I cant get a nice seam weld for anything...THat and my auto darkening helmet makes it where I can barely see
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Does your hood have a variable shade? I weld with a hobart variable shade auto darkening, I use it for everything from running the cutting torch to arc welding 3/8s wall drill stem with 7018 rod and 125 amps. Its very versatile.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Yes it is adjustable.... havent messed with it much though...Just kinda put it together and went to town
its this one http://www.harborfreight.com/adjusta...met-46092.html |

Got a lil bondo on the fender dents, holes and used the excess on the lip of the hood.... need to do much more and sand it but this is all before it got dark
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
no i got a welder just haven't got the nerves to try it by my self might try it on these after market 73-80 fenders i got that i cant get rid of
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
i hear ya...Thats why i started on the inner fenders...Had to do it one way or another so :)
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
yep you just got to jump into it. practice your skills as you go along.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
most deff.. i have done every thing else to my sept the welding that my dads but i think im going to get a roll of wire and try it out the next couple days on my 76
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
just go at it, with sheetmetal all you really need to do is spot weld and skip around alot. it is time consuming, but thats the only way to do it to avoid warping. which sucks.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
I like your idea for paint combo.
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
How's it going? No updates!
|
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
no progress this weekend... I had a bachelor party to attend in ATL so I was out of town spending all my money!!! I did get a lil sanding on the first bit of bondo and put some more on it.
Should be back to it this weekend and maybe a few nights this week... |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Allthough I really want to work on the fender and hood this weekend I have decided before I do any of that I am going to do the following:
Remove the driveshaft and replace the rear seal so it stops leaking. Remove the speedo cable and grease it so it stops jumping and squeaking Then I shall return to the body work and hopefully have the hood and fender prepped to go ahead and install |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Sounds like a plan.

Well started the day greasing the speedometer cable only to remove the the gauge cluster and with just a slight move the corner that holds the shifter wire broke off...I tried to rig it up but no luck...But I did put the new lens cover on it to see the difference and it looks great....Ordered a new cluster for the backing plate.
Sanded down the fender bondo and hit the hole thing with high build primer only to find a bunch of lil dings on the front of it..So i will have to sand those spots down and bondo them Also hit some more bondo on the hood under side edge and sanded the front bondo hole... |
Re: Project 78 High Sierra
Looking good, keep on keepin on.
