SBC forever!

I've been curious as friends of mine (and me at times) have stated it will cost more to build a hot BBC than a SBC.

Now I am not trying to hijack this thread so don't tak offense. As I know there is no replacing Displacement on CI.

As I know the BBC make some Monster torque numbers. Okay let me just end this here. Cuz I could make a new thread of BBC vs. SBC and most would go towards the BBC.

I was just wondering aloud while at work. :mm:

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Cubic dollars is what it takes to go fast, and they sure go alot farther when building a BBC than they do building a SBC or LS based engine.

To me, I like to know the (racing background) of the people questioning my dyno numbers. So I think its only fair I state my background. I machine and build and test my own engines, everything is machined in house with the crankshaft as an exception. 1. Two strait hot street championships (550 inch NA 10 inch tire 3350 pounds) both ends of the records, won every race except for 1 over a two season span, as an engine builder. 2. The fastest full weight, small tire, oval port (GM) production blocked chevelles in country come out of my shop. 3. Just for you I have an example of a Vortecpro powered 468 NA camaro, I think you just might be able to identify with. NA 468 9.40 @ 142.40 1.28 60 on the foot brake @ 1670 feet DA @ KCIR. BTW on that dyno you questioned the HP of, it made (the 468) 45 less hp than yours, 795 HP. Happy reading:metal:

Dont get in your defensive mode..Sounds like you have had some fast cars, you never know when a keyboard racer is just bumping there gums.

I have had friends show me dyno sheets with big numbers and the car wouldnt run anywhere close to the number it should have.

Thanks for the compliment on my old camaro, I had a 582 bbc,13.5-1 comp, cfe 385 bmf heads, single carb, N/A that dyno'd 1133 H.P built for that car and never got to put it in. That would have been fun !! One of these days I am going to build another hot rod and I may look you up for a powerplant. Geary

Just an FYI.

On the.9.56 pass and the pass with the maroon camaro with the 468. I was there for both of those passes as we rented the track. None of this is bull****.
The 9.56 was off the trailer and the 3rd pass ever on the motor. He also pedal'd that pass because the wheelie went a little higher than he wanted.
Garrets 468 is a bad little mofo!
The red chevelle should go high 20's low 30's when ironed out.

Congrats!!! I wanted to put mine up but had a few issues with the guys doing the work.. thus I will break the engine in and then have it put on a drum and I will have what really gets to the pavement.. I wish had a crank number as well though.. jealous HA HA

I dyno here but it is a rear wheel dyno for harleys. I have a question on the AFR that is showing on the sheet. Is there a reason that its running so rich?? Or was that where they set it as it made the most power there, or ran cooler, Most will run in the 13.0 range to 13.5 and run cool to make the best power.. Not stirring the pot only asking. To me that seems too rich.

Re: 496 to be DYNO'D!

Steve, Interesting you tune them that lean. For all the LS stuff I tune, I tend to set it about 12.8-12.9.. So to me, based on my time spent on the dyno with a bunch of LS stuff, the tune looks pretty good, the top end of the rom range might be a little rich, but not bad.. All depends on what the combo wants right?

Yes I have, and we do.. LOL again just asking. I have been doing this stuff for twenty years now, we have a very good handle on it. But only looking at afr is just the starting point a 4 gas will tell you much more. Opens up many more doors for tuning. We have to be careful not to run them too rich as you will end up building carbon and that in the long run will led to other issues as we all know.

My Stroker LS ran the best at 13.2 under that the power fell off by a large amount. I could have run it leaner and it was making more power ( we did try several ranges,.. but in the dunes the heat from the leaner afr would ramp up my coolant temp. Different beast of course.. And yes what the engine wants is how it should be tuned, there is no "written in stone" afr range .

Smart man on the 12 bolt at least, what trans are you running, stall also. That 496 should really rip, would like to hear it running in the truck, should be wicked. I imagine 3" exhaust for sure?:metal:

Nice stall, should kick a$$ pretty nice, your right about finding time, went to work on mine tonight but ended up pulling neighbors 94GM sterring column and rebuilding it but dark now so putting it back in tomorrow then get back to my bodywork again. Bodywork is a long road.

I'll start a build thread here someday... But the story of this truck is that my Grandfather bought it new in 82.. Around 1990 it became my Grandma's truck for camping with me and my brothers. Here's a pic of it in 1997. When I bought it in 2002 it still looked like this!
