Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Definitely go to the 3.73's!
Those 4.10 still scream,... unless you drive 55 mph everywhere you go. |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
4.10s really work well with the NV. if that is even an idea you are considering, i would do that. if not, you probably will be best off with 3.73s. if you will be pulling trailers much at all, i would really consider the NV route with 4.10s

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
I appreciate the nice comments from all of you fellas.
As far as the NV4500 thing goes. I'm not leaning that way simply due to the cost. The NV4500 is in such demand lately that the prices are being held pretty high. I could do gears for significantly cheaper than the OD swap. Plus, the SM465 that I have now is my favorite transmission. Can't anyone say they aren't strong and reliable. I suspect I'll wind up dragging the 4.10 rearend out from under the workbench and tune it up. I could do that pretty cheaply and it would certainly help drop my revs at cruising speed. |

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Slow progress here lately. My wife drug me to Mexico for some stupid sit on the beach crap. After I finally got that horsesh1t out of the way, I could come home and work on trucks again.
Today I started to get the bellhousing ready to install. Of course, it started off like all of them, greasy and nasty. That took a bit of scrubbing to get it clean. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...793224D8ED.jpg The Advance Adapter bracket interferes with the threaded bung where the factory linkage pivot ball screws in to. I had to grind that back some to get the clearance for the bolt holes to line up. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...AC7584C891.jpg Then to glass bead blast it and powdercoat. I used this neat powder that makes it look like freshly blasted aluminum, which is quite handy for old stained aluminum castings. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...BE3FE5F0BC.jpg Close up of where I had to grind and sand to get the clearance for the AA bracket. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...BE66BF24B0.jpg Then to double check all of the bolt holes with a tap and screw the pivot ball into place with loctite. New grade 8 bolts for the trans and bell housing mounting too. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...DF1B7CDA4A.jpg |

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
My truck has 3:73 gears and with 4,500lbs on the back it'll idle along at 1600 doing 80MPH.

Nice work! I like your attention to detail. Powdercoating looks awesome!

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Short update for today. I spent most of the day powdercoating some wheels for a fellow who is building a neat 53 Ford F100. Since I had the gun loaded with gloss black and the shop was already dirty, I decided to work a little personal project into the workflow.
The bellhousing came with a clutch lever which I'm hoping to use when I swap the bellhousing. But, it needed some real help before I'd be ready to use it. Notice the giant grooves worn into the ears there.... http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...AAFEAC8034.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...AABEC3E614.jpg The grooves were worn so deep that the ears had bent under the pressure since the material was ground so thin. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...AAD43183D3.jpg First step is to straighten the bent ears. Out comes the Crescent wrench and the bench vice. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...AB5EE43847.jpg Then weld up the worn areas and sand smooth with a flap wheel. Now, remember I said I already had the gun loaded with black powder ? An extra part hanging in the oven never hurt anything so... http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...B76399946E.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...B745929EC0.jpg One more part ready to go. One piece at a time. Hopefully when the time comes, I'll have all my ducks in a row. I'm kind of dragging my feet on the bellhousing R&R. I'm going to do a lot of interior work at the same time (reason why will become obvious when I get to that point) so I have a lot of stuff to round up and decisions to make. |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
thats such a nice thing the advance adapter bracket !

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Your powder work is better than the "pro" shops around here. Awsome job!

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
I appreciate the comment Karl. I put my work up against anyone, but I just hate being a business man so I prefer to just not do much of it.

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
That all looks great. At least you got the "RIGHT" side of that Honda Trail bike the "RIGHT" school!

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Those parts look fantastic... job well done!

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Wow, that looks awesome! I have an old Honda Passport scooter I should bring up there for powder coating. It's got sort of a patina look going on right now.

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Little update...
I'm sick as a dog. I'm lucky enough to have both type B flu and strep throat at the same time. So, the doctor has me on absolute bed rest. Fortunately, my wife is gone to work and the UPS delivery came today so I was able to cheat for a few minutes without anyone knowing. I hope you guys won't tell on me. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6B165CEBF0.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6B9BCE040A.jpg They are the cheap priced Summit brand ones, but the stickers on the backs are Phoenix brand which are the expensive name brand ones. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6B8291A579.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6CF1E94FC7.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6D042F7D15.jpg http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...6CDFCE9207.jpg The sickness is catching up to me though and I didn't have enough energy to put any Armor-All on the tires. |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Won't the wife notice the new bling and question you about how they got there? Take care man. Looks good.
On another note, the "expensive name brand" ones are made in China? |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
I was pretty much kidding about the wife finding out. I'm a pretty grouchy bastard and she knows better than to try and mother me when it comes to my health. Whenever a woman tries to nag me about something, I tend to usually do the opposite thing to the extreme.
As far as the China deal.... We use Phoenix brand simulators on all our ambulances at work. They're the expensive ones. When you price them, they run about double what these Summit brand ones do. Looks good. Hope you feel better...I hate being sick...

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
I am happy to report that with the shiny new wheel simulators the truck gets better mileage, burns less oil, hauls more weight, and even some of the hail dents popped out.
Not really, but it's definitely earning it's keep like I hoped it would. I still have a long way to go before it's fixed up nice enough to please me but the truck has good bones underneath it so it's just a matter of continuing to plug away at it till it's real solid and slick. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...F8C5E37207.jpg Other than the bellhousing, I'm thinking I'll try to pick up a decent hood for the truck and shoot it white and stick it on there. The present hood has a crack in the front of it, is beat up, and obviously is paint challenged. I know the new painted hood won't match perfectly, but it can't look as bad at the hood on it now does. |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
A Deweze bale grabber would be slick on your rig.

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
just ran across this thread. LOVE your truck!
There's an 86' C30 dually crew cab (454, AT) at our Ranch that I've been working on so it's been fun watching the improvements you've made to yours. |
Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Kevin, I have a decent white hood, too. I had a left fender, but I think it might have walked off. Next time you are over this way, come get it.

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Do you have an engine oil cooler setup? Our ranch truck does. Leaking rubber lines like everyone else's so I read.

My CC dually had an aftermarket set-up @ the heat exchanger side & OE GM adapter @ the block. It had rubber hose w/barbed fittings & typical worm gear style clamps @ the heat exchanger side to alum lines & compression fittings @ the adapter side. When I did the motor rebuild, I tossed the previous heat-exchanger & related parts (didn't want to worry about trash screwing up the fresh motor) & installed the same style (kit) w/new alum lines, new compression fittings, new rubber hose, & new barbed fittings (I re-used the GM adapter @ the block). For symmetry, I also did a duplicate heat-exchanger arrangement for the trans. I didn't have leaks before & hoping I don't now.... |

Seems to be a common problem. Don't know if the rubber flows out of the way over time due to hot oil contact or what. Most replace with factory parts but I read one post where a guy cut off the crimps and used standard hose clamps to eliminate the leaks. |

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Again, this truck has no cooler, but my 94 did. It had the kind with threaded fittings into the block with quick connects rather than the sandwich adapter under the oil filter. It was all leaking so I bought two new lines for it and new quick connects to screw into the block and the trouble went away. I have since sold the truck to an oilfield welder and he puts about 5k plus miles per month on it (a 454 at 9 mpg...ouch) and it still doesn't leak.

Re: The Hillbilly Deluxe dually build
Not much new to report on this truck right now. It's been too busy earning its keep.
