Chizzler, you are getting a good solid start on the floor! The donor vehicle looks pretty solid.

Ah. Couldn't see much on this little phone. I almost bought a 39 a while back for a rat rod project but didn't get it. Anyway good luck on the build. I'm lookin at a 65 Chevy stepside after I finish my crew cab

Quick update. New floor pans are in. Old rockers are cut out and getting ready to put doors back on. New cab mounts are mocked up but not fully welded. Also purchased a lb rolling chassie to be stretched. Also put the duramax wheels on because the other wheels had three different size tires. Thanks CHIZZLER.

Nice work on the floors Chizzler. Where did the panels come from?

Sheet metal all came from top banana.

Nice job on the floor/support replacement. It sure looks nice.

Great looking project. Looks like it's too late to suggest using the newer frame/running gear with the firewall and floor mated to the upper parts of the cab and dash from the 61

CHIZZLER 03-04-2015 12:33 AM

Re: 1961 Crew Max

That would have been to easy. Plus it will be 2wd and the d-max frame is huge.

Some progress updates. Passenger side rocker replacement went pretty good. Lots of fitting, trimming to make everything fit. Front door was short 3/8" compared to back door. Ground down bottom edge of rear door to make rockers fit for now. Will probably end up replacing bottoms of all doors to make them line up. Also bottom of front pillar replacement pieces do not come with welded nuts for mounting cab supports. Had to weld on backing plates with nuts.

Wow! Lookin awesome!
That is a lot of rocker to line-up!
The gaps look good so far!

Re: 1961 Crew Max

lookin nice! do you have pics of what you did for the center of the inner rocker?

CHIZZLER 03-08-2015 09:07 AM

Re: 1961 Crew Max

Center section of the inside rocker is not in. Im going to try and add a cab mount at each b-pillar. I did the bottom repair the same as you did with the intent of using the welded on nuts to align a new cab mount. waiting on parts.

I was thinking of doing the same thing... add a little more strength to the pillar.

did yours have a front seat in it when you got it?
I am trying to figure out what it was backed with.
mine has screw holes around the perimeter and the screws , but nothing else... I am wondering if it was the same material as the headliner, or a metal panel...?
in this old pic it is hard to tell... also did yours have a rear seat, and did it appear to just be a front with solid supports like mine has?
I am checking the seats for fit, and the seats seem real close together...
(last photo is the only pic I have of this style with the seats in it)

My seats look like the bottom 3 pics you posted. My front seat still has some screws on the back side but nothing else. Rear seat appears to be a front seat with a sold base.

thanks, I'll have to do more research and try to figure out what was on the back of the front.

Drivers side rockers went pretty well. Everything lines up pretty good except were the doors meet at the b-pillar. There is about a 1/2" gap as compared to the passengers at about 1/4" strong. Jon i got my rear cab supports in and they fit pretty well under the b-pillar. Possibly cut the front cab support off the frame and tuck it under and weld it on the new frame. Then weld the cab support to the inside of the rocker and the front to back floor support.

This truck is a terrible idea. Once all the body work is done it should be thrown away...into my garage!!

Seriously though, amazing work!

Little progress this week. got the sbw panel out to swap for a bbw. Got the gas filler area fixed to accept a patch piece. Also noticed the door hinges on my 53 suburban are looking pretty good for a swap on the back doors. They sit flush with the pillar on the inside edge and fold into the pillar. There might just be enough room on the b-pillar to accept this. Going to do some measuring to confirm before i go cuttin away.

Got the big back window panel. It was nice to get the entire roof piece to reverse drill the spot welds. No big holes in the panel to deal with. Overall fit is pretty good. Just tacked for now so i can sand blast behind it and paint it. Also removed door windows.

This is the company i will probably use for stand alone. The guy that builds the harness was a gm engineer for like 20 years. Great knowledge and will design it how you want. He said turn around time was about a week. Also takes the ecm and sends it to get flashed from a buddy.

What is he flashing for in the PCM? Just deleting VATS and EGR?

So got the motor and trans out of the d-max. Cut the cab off the frame to make it easier. This thing is big and heavy. My pour little cherry picker just about gave up on me.
