I got a rear sway bar from a guy at work yesterday so last night I cleaned it up and painted it to match the rest of the frame. It's out of a Trans Am and looks like it's pretty straightforward to bolt in! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1570/...de2ff978_b.jpg Even sanded the front sway bar down and got it nice and pretty too! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1658/...2b89760f_b.jpg Tonight I'll be building a cradle to hold the motor on the floor so I can get the flywheel, clutch and tranny all bolted up to it. Should see it in the frame on Saturday :metal: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Man that truck is looking Sweet! Great work. Engine looks super!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Wow this is coming together awesome Scott! Keep on truckin along:metal:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Thanks guys! Getting it to start looking like a truck again boosts my confidence in my aggressive timeline but there's still 100 little things to do. I'm super happy that I get to plug away at it a little each night after work, makes the full work days go nice and smooth :chevy:

Got the flywheel, clutch and bellhousing on last night and measured to see if I needed to cut the bearing retainer down and it looks like I do. I'll get it done at work today or tomorrow :metal: A little accessory bolt on action, the black looks awesome on the orange :) https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1586/...97d89f17_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1476/...0d2cc79d_b.jpg A little progress each night :chevy: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Looking good! I'm glad your keeping the six. I also run 235/75/15s on my truck. I found a set for $60 a tire new and I couldn't beat it.

Shortened the bearing retainer on lunch today. I ended up shortening it 7/16", I'm still outside of the travel distance of the throwout bearing and should be far enough away from the clutch disc too. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1660/...97216089_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1559/...a1916909_b.jpg Nice and short now https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1688/...f02bb23a_b.jpg Even chamfered the edges for that factory look  https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1469/...4dd23ca9_b.jpg |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Flickr isn't letting me upload this morning, dangit!
Got quite a bit done over the weekend. Saturday, I dropped the motor and trans in and while dad was cutting the shifter hole, I started getting the accessories bolted on the motor :metal:. I also fit my clutch and brake master cylinders, I need to move the clutch reservoir up a bit more but other than that, they all play nice with each other :) Yesterday, I went on a morning parts run and started modifying my S10 shifter to accept a bolt on shift lever. Seemed to go smoothly except I picked the wrong spot so neutral is at the dash and 1st is waaaaay under the dash. Tonight I will get that fixed and build my tranny crossmember. It's coming together! :chevy: Doesn't look like I can attach pictures here right now either, must be a work computer thing. I'll tinker with that tonight on my super slow laptop. |

Here are a couple pictures from the weekend that I wasn't able to post before. I was excited to see the FedEx truck pull in, I knew it had my replacement rotor on it and I was right! https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7477/...2a1fe8d7_b.jpg Promptly made it a roller https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7696/...2cc9d4b9_b.jpg Motor going in! https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7616/...218d22f5_b.jpg Modifying the S10 shifter for a bolt on lever https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7293/...daf917fc_b.jpg The stick is in 2nd gear right now so I'll be mounting the stick to the more upright position on the shifter itself. That should put it right where I want it. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7071/...a26a67d5_b.jpg Last night, I busted the cross member out for the T5. I'm super happy with how it turned out and how it works. One more step to driving it again :metal: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7363/...ba6915f7_b.jpg Check out my sweet welding table  https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/...c01e773c_b.jpg And installed. Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Got the shifter fixed and the distributor stabbed in last night. The shifter is in a way better spot now, it was under the dash before.
I basically turned it into a Camaro shifter but the price was way better  https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7659/...e654e0d9_b.jpg I had to take it all apart to be able to cut it low enough. I sanded the front tab off and tacked the plates when I reassembled it. Picture is pretty bad, sorry bout that https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7201/...aa53ca2f_b.jpg Neutral https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7523/...fb894f3d_b.jpg 1st https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7558/...30d9d2d0_b.jpg 2nd https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7371/...7d8c968c_b.jpg The motor is coming together :metal: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7301/...7bee6514_b.jpg I should get my new brake and fuel lines tomorrow so I'll get those installed then. Tonight I'm going to get the engine wire harness sorted out and mount the carburetor :chevy: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

|
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Good job on the shifter, I just had to do that with mine as well.
|
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
More motor pictures. Got it all wired up last night and got the carburetor installed. I was supposed to be doing brake and fuel lines but those items got shipped separately from the rest so they didn't show up with the miscellaneous parts yesterday. I also measured for the rear driveline last night too. I love progress! :metal:
I found out that I got the wrong water pump and it interferes with the power steering pump bracket but that's an easy fix. I kinda wanted a black water pump anyway  https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7141/...b0761c9c_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7631/...c0738dd6_b.jpg I've got a full weekend this weekend but I'm hoping to get some time on the old girl and get it ready to roll out of the garage so I can start getting the front clip cleaned up and back on. |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Didn't get a whole lot of time to work on it over the weekend but I was still able to find a little each night. My steering showed up on Friday, gotta say that this is probably one of my favorite pieces on the truck. I can't wait to drive it! It's the rack and pinion kit from Unisteer, simple to bolt on the only thing that would've been nice was to have specific instructions for the 60-66 trucks. It still went together smooth though.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/...99a543a0_b.jpg No turning back now! https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7591/...789ac41c_b.jpg Saturday, I got my air cleaner back from dad. All he did was clean it up, didn't need paint! https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7496/...ebccf2ce_b.jpg I also was able to get the front sway bar on after the Mother's Day festivities yesterday. It's coming together :metal: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/...c9b349ba_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7604/...6fc77e8b_b.jpg Still waiting on my brake and fuel lines. I'll give Classic Parts a call tomorrow if I don't see them tonight. |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Kind of in a dilemma with the radiator. I dropped it off yesterday to get checked out and fixed as needed and they called me back today. It's got good flow and holds pressure but it is showing it's age with a bowing core and some degradation of the tubes. I plan on pushing the truck somewhat hard in an autocross type setting but not terribly hard when I'm just driving it. I'm thinking I'll slap it in and run it until it quits being a radiator, hopefully it outlasts the motor. Sorry I-6 guys, this will have a V8 before too long.
Re-coring is more than a replacement (bummer since mine is original) and a new radiator runs about $360. What do you guys think, will I be ok through the summer or should I replace the radiator while I'm here? |

Here ya go:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-1964-19...3D291522805303 Have you considered hopping up the 292? Little spendy, but a rather fun journey. |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Quote:
I haven't put much thought into hopping up the 292. I know it's a great motor but the plans and goals that I have (need 120-140MPH with ease), it would take way more money than if I were to swap in an LS. Plus, I really am not keen on the sound of the old inlines, just doesn't do much for me. |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Well, I took a few days off for some last minute preparations for Oregon Trophy Challenge. It's an offroad event that I've competed in in my Jeep and this year helped organize. It was a ton of fun but it's time to get back to the Chevy!
Didn't do a whole lot last night but I did get the fuel line on and a few other little things done. Going to work on the brake lines and water pump tonight :) |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Things to do while waiting on brake line fittings. Got the rear driveline on, the correct water pump on, plumbed the fuel line from the tank to the pump and changed out the driver's side window track. I need to do a bit of tweaking with the driveline as it's biased towards the passenger side a bit but other than that it's coming together nicely.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7637/...170c284b_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7743/...d5f8267e_b.jpg I also carried the 250 valve cover over since it has Chevrolet on it and the 292 didn't. I searched high and low for the valve cover grommet that holds the tube to the air cleaner. Chevy didn't have it so I got an expandable freeze plug. Not pretty but functional and doesn't look too ugly either. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/...8542f5f3_b.jpg I will have my brake line fittings today when I get home. Tonight I'm headed to PIR for a track night to watch my buddy run his F100 and get some exposure to this new world I want to play in. Should be a great time! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Got a bunch more progress made over the weekend. I'm starting to realize I more than likely won't have it fully ready to go for the show on the 11th but I should be able to drive it on and off the trailer so that's ok. Not for lack of trying, it's just how it goes.
My buddy came over Saturday night and we plumbed the brake lines and the fuel line from the pump to the carb. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7787/...9281f492_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7263/...32227e61_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7611/...993e7532_b.jpg Sunday morning, I tore right into it and removed the factory radiator mounts. The radiator I picked up needed a 3" rise to get the height I needed, it'll work great :metal: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7236/...ca9d4c8a_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7616/...815089e3_b.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7257/...80f65327_b.jpg While I was fabbing up my riser, dad showed up and got to work on my tranny cross member. We had to slot the holes so the output could be pushed to the driver's side a little more. Once that was taken care of, I clearanced the frame a bit for my steering shaft for the rack. Way better now. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/...3b3dc7d0_b.jpg Rear sway bar going on https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/...321b67f5_b.jpg One thing that I knew was going to hold this whole show up was the accessory drives. I have been struggling to find the right water pump pulley and also the brackets that will bolt the power steering pump to the engine bracket. I found those things last night! Cost a bit more than I'd like but they are what I needed so it's not too bad. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7359/...24986c05_b.jpg More work will continue this week and into the weekend! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Nice rad! And great job finding the pulley!

I may make a bracket that bolts to the pump for the turnbuckle but I'm not sure yet. Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck

The radiator was surprisingly cheap, just a bit over $200. It's from Northern and is P/N 209676 for those that might be interested. The factory upper hose works pretty well but the lower does not, easy fix though :chevy: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
My parents stopped by last night to drop off my early birthday present for the 66! My birthday is on Monday but they will be out of town visiting with my brother and his wife in Denver this weekend so they surprised me with a visit and truck parts :metal:
