Got the garage cleaned up, HOLY CRAP that took me about 5 hours today. But that's my New Years resolution, to get back to my five minutes a day plan on my truck. I got so much done on that plan and it all came to a halt when I started walking. Well, I can do both damn it. But just a little more tomorrow to get the bench cleaned up and I am back to working out there.
I don't mean I cleaned it up OCD couldn't work because it wasn't perfect. I couldn't even get to the truck! I had to disassemble and cut up that shelf/bench that I had under the garage window. It was a beautiful shelf/bench, hated to do it but I don't have the room. I had gotten it from a neighbor for a co-worker of mine but the dude never came and got it! Finally got fed up as it was just a junk collector, wham, done, it's gone. But tomorrow I will get out there to clear up the bench and be back at it! WHOO HOOOO! Brian |

I didn't get much done, about 15 minutes, but DAMN it was more than I have the last year! So my five minutes a day plan is under way. I had to RUN out there to do this being I had to take my daughter last night to her dance class, but damn it, I am going to put in my five minutes.
Making patterns works guys, don't ever short yourself on patterns. After fitting this piece I made a year or more ago, I went to my daughters dance class and got a "Spider Dragon" at the Japanese place next door. :D Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I got my title in the mail and ready for 2017. Hitting things hard over the holidays and have begun major dismantling of the '49. Bought a crane for the garage 25% off NYE sale. I have to keep the garage clean because I don't have much space to work to begin with. I like your idea of 5 minutes a day @MARTINSR.

It WORKS! If that is all you did the truck would get done sooner than if you did nothing right? But damn, it usually ends up with at the very least a half hour, or hour. But if all I do is walk out and arrange some nuts and bolts, if that is all I do I am going to be out in that garage at least 5 minutes. I have been sitting on the couch in my pajamas having given up after a hard day thinking, "just this once, it's not like I can get anything done." But I get up and go out there and do SOMETHING. It's amazing what I have gotten done with that plan. Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I'm going to have to hunt through your photos and or threads to find out how you sectioned the cab Martinsr That is part of my build plan and I need to so some homework on it.

These are a couple of photos that really should be added to that "Basics."
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psff099258.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps34f60f44.jpg They show how to eliminate a cut through the middle of the firewall like Sam Gates did on the Rod and Custom Dream Truck. Especially with the mild 2.5 inch section I did only the cowl had to be cut and it worked like a dream! Brian |

Well my five minutes got my patch panels holes punched in it, that was it. I did find that my two cans of weld thru primer were crap being I haven't used them in so long. So that was it for tonight. I did get something done on my brothers radiator box for his Crosley motorcycle he is making too.
I know it's not much, but again, more than I got done all of last year! Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I'm liking this 5 minutes thing, although I have to travel next week for work so I probably can't actually make it the whole year working on the truck every day. That would be a cool goal though.
Today, got a shop crane built and got the bed strapped to it ready to be taken off the chassis. Will try get it off tomorrow although I've already noticed the two rear bolts holding the bed to the frame are hidden under the wood slats. The slats are almost rotted off so I may just get a hole saw and cut a hole where the bolt head is just to get a ratchet down there. |

Got out there for my five minutes again! I sand blasted the inner structure where my patch goes and sprayed some weld thru primer on it and the back of the patch. It cracks me up that we do this as I have here with the weld thru primer and cleaning it up when the whole cab is made of rust filled lap welds like this! Like cleaning this up is going to make a big difference.
But I can't do it without at least giving it a few minutes like this to get it right. Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Been 3 1/2 years since I did the "refresh" on my '55 2nd, gosh, how time flies when you're having fun! Still running great. My Christmas present to my truck is a bit cheapo, but sorely needed, as the rubber pads on my clutch and brake have been popping off at inopportune times lately..... Got a new set off evilbay, we'll see if they can last 3 years like the present set?

Mounted my new firewall booster/master! I know it seems small, but after much time (and money) into getting the firewall nice, it was so hard drilling the first hole! I think I must have measured at least a half dozen times before committing. Next up, new Ididit tilt column!
Cheers, Jim |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Measure twice-cut once! It's looking damn good!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Thanks. Have the same issues as Roger55 where I'll still need to heat and bend out the vertical brace to allow ample room for bellows to move.
Cudos to Roger for sharing. |

I got out to the garage last night to simply put my curtains back up so I can weld and grind without having to move my Gran Sport out of the garage. I am going to get out to that garage for 5 minutes every day, sometimes it's something like this, other times it turns into a few hours. But damn it, if I get out there I will get SOMETHING done! I am a California woosy and have a hard time taking that 40 degree garage! I also had to pay tribute to Pete Chapouris who died yesterday. Damn it's hard to hear that he passed away. I was of the era that changed because of him. That magazine, the first time we saw "The California Kid" and Jakes "Screaming Yellow Zonker" OMG I studied every page of that magazine like I had studied no book in school EVER. I have it hanging up in my garage, now it's there for a different reason. :( Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Just do it Brian....it was -1f here this morning. Would look forward to your updates.
Didn't know that about Pete. A loss....I remember that issue and just ordered California Kid movie in November. |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Thanks for the link and the cowl photos Martinsr. that was what I was wanting and real close to how I figured I'd do mine.
As far as what I got done on the truck today I got my son to run up and pick up the 9 inch rear I bought a couple of weeks ago. Dang those are heavy when they are all together. Now to go back out and finish getting the snow blower back together so I can use it in the morning. |

I got some welding done on the patch I have been working on. I can't get it all done being the garage is detached and I have to stay out there quite a while after the last weld to be sure nothing is going to start a fire. So I welded these welds then studied the other side to see what I will do there and a few other things and thinking out what I will do. ANYTHING you do is better than nothing so just looking is better than staying in the house and having a beer. :D

Here's a couple of R&C magazines that I still have. You might remember these from 1958 and 1959. It makes me smile to see the difference in quality of the cars then and now. These are the small ones, BTW. 5 by 8 inches. |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I believe I have that issue on the left. :D Oh heck yeah we have spent a lot of time staring at those magazines. :D

Yeah, I maybe I can start one. I MIGGED this particular thing. I am gas welding some stuff but that's only if I can get behind it to plannish it nice.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Done, got a build thread started.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I got another rusted through section cut out on the bottom of the cowl. I also cut a slit up the cowl at the door edge to widen the gap little. :D I will fine tune it when I do the welding of the patch.

The last two nights I have been out in the garage Which is better than nothing at least the truck is sitting there and I am connected a little. As I hadn't been doing anything out there for the last few years. But I have a project I have to finish for my brother's Crosley Motorcycle he is building as I have a deadline I have been ignoring. I worked on the radiator box for it. But I could have lied and said it was the heater box for the truck.
Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
nice work, gotta love those looooong vice grips.
isn't it funny how everybody else's project deadline seems to trump our's? and how nobody ever has time to help with our project but we are expected to drop it all and work on their emergency? just saying. I gotta get MY stuff uncovered and set up or it will be another summer of looking at parts instead of driving. heck, I don't even have a build thread (like I am smart enough to figure that out, I did try once but don't know where it went. outer space maybe, haha) |

Took my '56 out of the garage so I could see how the 1.5 inch drop springs and 2in drop spindles look, also decided to sweep the floor before I put her back inside!
