beautiful work! Its amazing to see people have the patience and abilities to do these activities. Hope to see you all keep posting and showing your trucks off! Wish I had some people around my area close to help out! Keep it up

You would be surprised what you can accomplish if you just try. Honestly I think I taught myself more in a few hours in my shop then any teacher ever taught me in a tech class.

Greg and I had a pretty good day yesterday. we picked up a mock up block and set of heads as well as our core 700R transmission. We bolted it into the frame and now we can get started fabricating the transmission cross member and I can get serious about building the all 304 Stainless exhaust system.
The Hedman Chevelle Headers Greg bought from Summit fit amazingly well, nice and high and with lots of room. so here are a few pictures Attachment 1702377 Attachment 1702378 Attachment 1702379 Attachment 1702380 Attachment 1702381 |

Nice build. Sometimes I think when people see a build like this where you obviously have it under control there's a tendency to sit back and enjoy the show without throwing out anything that may be distracting.
Believe me, people are watching (and learning), Rg |

Big day for us.
We fabbed the removable transmission cross-member. this single piece really had us scratching our heads as it has so many obstacles to address. It had to be less then an inch thick where it spanned the exhaust. It had to give clearance to speedo cable. Also it had to be strong enough to handle a built 454's violence. Greg got serious about cutting out and replacing the steel on the frame sides Attachment 1703288 Attachment 1703289 Attachment 1703290 Attachment 1703291 Attachment 1703292 |

I stood around with a tape measure and made faces figuring out this fab.
Asking myself if running a 3" exhaust inside the frame was really possible. I'll get back to that in a while, anyway here is our solution to the Transmission mount. Attachment 1703293 Attachment 1703294 Attachment 1703295 Attachment 1703296 Attachment 1703297 |

Bolted in.
Attachment 1703298 Attachment 1703299 So here is the reason for the head scratching. 3" 304 Stainless exhaust we are custom building. Attachment 1703300 Attachment 1703301 The front section has to be able to drop out for transmission service, incorporate the H-pipe and leave clearance for the heat shield we will be building. |

Finished up the exhaust to the back of the mufflers, still waiting on some more mandrel bent tube to get the back half finished. Went ahead and built some brackets to hang everything with urethane isolators on 3/8" hardware.

So Greg and I got the body loaded back on the frame to let us figure out the steering column and finalize the firewall. Waiting on the valve covers to see how much room we will have.

Very nice fab work. As someone who is currently in the throes of a shop build, I agree, the planning and trying to see into the future is almost more work than building the dang thing!

couple small up dates.
The engine was shipped to us last Tuesday and should arrive middle of next week. We sprayed the cab with primer as it was developing surface rust since we media blasted it. Best advice I could offer are build a frame rack, it has simplified and increased the accuracy of our build further then any other component so far. |

Greg's truck took a turn in both design and equipment this week. When the motor builder sent us the dyno information we humbly realized we had a weak link in the build. The 700R4. The little GM automatic was just not going to be able to withstand the abuse Greg will be inflicting to it. So the 4L80E stepped up to the plate and dropped its resume on our white board. Yea it is more then capable of the task so we called the Transmission shop and canceled the build on the 700, and ordered it's built up big brother.
The fly in this ointment is the new transmission isl a lot bigger. It is wider, it is taller and to our horror it is ten inches longer. Our Transmission cross member and its associated tabs on the frame are toast. That is just a matter of fabrication and we are fine with that, but the real tragedy is the crossover pipe on the exhaust system that had run behind the the trans mount would now be in front of it and the trans would be above it. That was going to make me hang myself. I have close to 40 hours alone just building this exhaust focusing on keeping everything above the frame bottom. Here is a picture of the previous set up Attachment 1715972 nice and cozy and the distance of the crossover in relation to the header collector was optimum. So with tears in our eyes we grabbed the mock up block bolted to the new 4L80 mock up transmission and lowered it back into the frame to see just how bad this situation was. Attachment 1715973 How is this possible? How could the build Gods be so kind? :metal: Attachment 1715978 Attachment 1715977 Sorry had to edit as I mislabeled this as a 4L60 when as I was correctly scolded, it is in fact the 4L80e |
