after getting dumped on last dec with snow, jan was our 4th wettest. after 24 or 25 straight days of rain, we finally got some nice weather, sunny, but cold, a small artic outflow at our end of the valley. got the whole family out, even the wife was getting a little stir-crazy wit all the rain and came out for a hike...

Attachment 1751901 by the time i caught up with him, 12 yr old dawg had caught his birthday fish, and it was a nice one. he got a chinook, which is kinda rare right now, a real early one. they usually hit the river around mid march-ish.. Nearly two years since I had some decent truck/road trip photo's to put up. Daughter in Switzerland was back on home turf, younger daughter said yes as well so I wrangled a week off and made a few phone calls. New Zealand, especially the North Island is incredibly limited with public off road opportunities. Not like you Diesel! Anywho, with the limited days we had, I decided to run up the East Coast, an area I'd never been to as the highway cuts North further inland. (The red lines are the small off road bits).
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520733997 We headed off the main route North at Masterton. You head out into rolling hills, all sheep and beef farms, and forestry. I tried to stay as East as possible the whole way up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520733997 Compusary stop at the longest place name in the world (Woo)! Say it after me now..... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735264 And onto our first beach/night. Porangahau is a small settlement with pub, gas station, shop sort of a deal. Typical of all the beaches up this way. We managed to avoid the crowds..... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520733997 And the Kiwi staple, fish and chips! On the beach, on the back of the GMC. Does it get any better? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520733997 |

Ok, so I can put words between the pic's, but then the pictures are doubled up at the end...! If you can tell me how to get rid of the pictures at the bottom I'd appreciate it!
North from Porangahau the road cuts inland but if you go up to Blackhead beach (great name eh!) you can go out onto the beach and up to the next settlement and save a few road miles. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735706 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735706 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735706 You can actually carry on up furthur to Porerere but I wussed out. There was no one around, the tide was on the way in, and 'nearly' making it wasn't really an option! http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735706 So we headed back out on to the road and North onto a sheep station. I had rung the farmer and asked about off road opportunities and he said we could head onto his place! The Kiwi vernacular for small house/hut normally used for holiday/hunting etc is 'bach' pronounced 'batch' (go figure). Well, to be more precise, in the North Island it's 'bach', in the South Island it's 'crib'. Either way, this guy had built a small place up on the coastal ridge looking west over his farm, and east over the Pacific. An amazing place. Nothing but Pacific for 5000 miles to the Chilean coast. This is right out front of the bach. Nice spot huh? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520735706 |

We then headed West back down to the road/main farm buildings before heading further West on the main farm. This is a generational family farm settled in 1882. Pretty old for these parts!
In front of the woolshed. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520744994 I guess it's always been a thing to write your name in the rafters using the bale stencil's. Done it myself back in the day. Pretty cool when they are 113 years old. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745031 We then drove up a logging track, and walked up to the top point of the farm/district. Nice to get the lay of the land. The red arrow is where we parked the truck, blue is the bach. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745031 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745031 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745031 |

Then North again to the next beach stop, Mangakuri. Another stunning spot, great little bach, and crowded beach....not!
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745294 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745294 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520745294 Next day was onto another big station. This 'short cut' kept us as East as possible, and saved a large road detour inland, and got us up to the more populated beaches East of Hastings/Napier. Again I found a good attitude went a long way in gaining access. Weather closed in, but (it's a long story) actually ended up in giving us a better route, again along the coastal ridge. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520748655 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520748655 |

We had two nights in Napier catching up with friends and family. Good times, including the girls going to a hens night. Sunday afternoon ran West on the Napier/Taupo highway. Dinner in Taupo then half an hour south down the lake to our last bach. Fantastic little spot on the edge of the lake. Wet when we got there, and poured during the night. Forecast was for rain Monday as well.

Chasing trout. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746187 Forecasters got it wrong and Monday ended up being a stunning day. Got the kayaks out on the lake. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746187 Our place right in the middle of the photo. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746187 |

Was the perfect place to just hang out for a couple of days at the end of the trip.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746826 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746826 The run home on Tuesday was wet down the Desert Road. I thought it might lift so went back up the Tikino ski field road. It didn't, and the road was a lot rougher than it was two years ago when me and number two went up. Sorry girls! http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746826 And then the run home. Another storm front heading North up the Desert. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1520746826 Another fantastic run in an old GMC truck. Around 750 miles, a little beach, a little farm track, and plenty of rural New Zealand roads. Good times. Truck ran great and the only problem was some broken exhaust bolts. Possibly from frame flexing through the farms. Some of the roughest country we've been on. Even after 11500 miles I'm still glancing underneath to make sure nothing is falling off! It all falls on my greasy little fingers if something does, being the guy who took it apart/stuck it back together! Back to reality (?) and still planning the big South Island trip.... |

Well, I'm still mourning the fact we still have over a foot of snow on the ground! But, here's some pics from last year - island camping on Hungry Horse reservoir: (and one hunting camp pic from a few years ago)

Re: post up your camping pics
My future camping adventures will be a lot more comfy in this. Still need to finish it, but it will see dirt this summer. No more sleeping on the ground for me!

Re: post up your camping pics
Like that alot, compact enough you can still use the rig. I camped alot out of K5's. I made screen "windows" that fit in place of the rear glass. Roll the rear glass down, open the tail gate & slide the screen up into the window track, close the tailgate. It would have been nice to have more headroom though.
