Re: 67 GMC super custom build
What did you use as a nut to hold the damper in place?

It actually a piece of 1/4" flat that I tapped and welded on the Inside of the gate. It fits perfectly with the spacing of the handle of the damper. I did File out and add a piece into the damper so when I tighten it up it gets sandwiched nice and tight.

Started the other side. Made a bushing for the rod to ride on. Now to the other side where the rod goes into. That will be a little more of a challenge to make.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
That is a sweet mod.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Very cool. Where are you getting the delrin bushings?

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
I got them from member 1966chevy some time ago. It's unbelievable how much quieter it operates now.

This works just like crossbreed's video. I'm glad I did this mod. I have a few things to do to finish this up but for the next bit I'll be finally getting back to work for a couple of days. This is how my trunions ended up looking. Took more than a couple hours and about 200 bucks but we'll worth it.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Nice Addition.
Looks great:metal: . |

Got a bit further on the gate tonight. Got the bushing into the gate tight so it won't come out and started the piece that holds the rod inside the gate.

Got the piece made for the rod to stick into. Now to weld it in and see how it works.

Someone needs to do a step by step write up on this tailgate mod! I am loving watching it come together!

Just wow, came across you build and read from start to finish, so many well done add ons and details. Great job to this point.

Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Thanks. Hoping I can get you guys a video of the gate in the next couple of days. Just waiting for a part in the mail. It's taking extra long to get stuff these days.

Picked up an engine run stand last night I'm going to use to break my engine in. It supposedly doesn't need a radiator. It has adapters on eack end of the rad hoses st hook up to your water tap. Has anyone ever run an engine like this? Seems like pumping constant cold water into a warm engine would not be the best.
|
Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Although I have only run an engine with the garden hose trick once, I would suggest having a valve on the outlet end of hose coming out of the thermostat housing so you could monitor the engine temp and adjust the valve accordingly.
|
Re: 67 GMC super custom build
Yeah. It might be best to moch up a radiator for it as well. Not worth ruining a brand new engine.

New oil pumps in. The shark tooth design is quite a bit less restrictive to rotate by hand and is much quieter. I'm really glad I changed it out. I also straightened out the pan. The longer bolts that come with the gasket aren't crowned like the factory ones were and they just pulled in where the holes are. I found longer ones that are crowned that fit properly and won't damage the pan hopefully.

Here's the tailgate video! Watch "Tailgate" on YouTube
https://youtu.be/nP6ysgoDLyE Best part of this mod is there is no way to tell its there with the gate mounted. |
Re: 67 GMC super custom build
These old Chevy and GMC tailgates are heavy, and this mod stops the thing from slamming. Well done, now I have more work to do.
|
Nice work!

Got my original 4 row harrison rad back today. Had it re-cored. That was not cheap but it was worth it. Sure is heavy.
