Having said that - after driving the poop out of the truck this weekend, it looks like she's going back to my vendor for some minor annoyances: Dripping from the tranny's rear seal, brakes seem to be binding - took my fingerprint off when I touched the rear drum, and the TH350 is making a weird ratcheting noise in the top gear (but not in 1st or 2nd) at speed (60-75). None of this scares me though - and the little '283' really pulls nicely through traffic. Mac. :mm: |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Expect to get the word on the re-fix by Wednesday. Still puzzled over the lack of charging or any indication there of on the dash. Thought I wired everything just like my 65' Chevelle, which also has an old school external regulator system.
The only thing that seemed weird was the 2-pole plug that went into the back of the externally regulated alternator. The wires had the same color scheme (blue and gray) but were reversed in position from what my car has. I wired these two leads to what I thought was the correct lead in the old wire loom. They might be reversed - because I'm getting nothing through the big battery charging wire. Hope that's all it is. Any thoughts? Mac. :smoke: |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
I'd check all the connections. If that don't do it, I'd consult the bible. Both of my trucks are converted to internaly regulated alternators so I can't look at it and tell ya.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
:smoke: Will do, Jason.
I was thinking of spending another five bucks and buying another plug for the back of this alternator - wire some leads to it and see which wire signals the alternator to charge. Failing that - I'll go back to the internally regulated alternator. Guess I could always save the external voltage regulator for the Chevelle, as it still has the original system. Then it's on to try to figure out why the horn stays on when plugged in and the turn signals stall when the brake is applied. Mac. :sumo: |
