Hey everyone, back for a little update. On Saturday, after getting #1 up to TDC, we pulled the old distributor, and installed the new. From the two pics you can see the caps are different. So my current plug wires won't work, with the new, so I will buy new wires.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Sunday being Mother's day, Mark and I were at the nursing home for awhile.
After I got home I removed the wires from the coil. Also cut the grass (about 4-1/2 acres)

Todays update: After visiting with wife, I stopped an bought new plug wires. When I got home Mark had removed the old coil and installed the new. Got all wires hooked up to new coil.

Mark ran the new plug wires AND IT NEVER FAILS THE NEW WIRES WERE TO SHORT ON A COUPLE PLUGS, SO HAD TO REMOVE MY WIRE HOLDERS TO MAKE THEM WORK.

Once everything was hooked up, hit the key and it fired right up. I could tell the timing was off, so we hooked up the light and brought it up to 12 deg initial timing, which is what it was before we removed the old distributor. Sounds exactly like it did before the change. Mark did almost all the work today, I just did some small stuff.

Pic 1 New coil in position and all wired up.

Pic 2 New Distributor and plug wires installed.

Pic 3 Old Mallory dist., coil, and resistor ready for swap meet. (Good stuff, just FiTech didn't like the resistor).

Mark and I have a couple things to check and then we will start installing on the sheet metal.

Tuesday's update: Mark and I reinstalled the seat and top.

Then we did a water test on the windshield, last trip in the rain I had a small leak, and thought now was a good time to fix. Found the leak, removed the old rubber from around the windshield, cleaned out the old sealant. Bought new rubber at local windshield place and their sealant. Installed new sealant, installed new rubber and will let it sit till tomorrow, and it should be good to go. Here's a couple pics...Jim

FiTech still performing well Jim? Appreciate the example you set for us with your fixes...windshield leak, new seals and sealant....rather than trying to seal it up.

Hey Doug, Fitech is great, it starts so easy no matter how long you let it sit. Can't wait to get truck back together, so I can take it for a shake down run.

Hope our fix took care of the problem.

How's things going on your end. I know you've had problems with water like us. I stayed nice and dry, but not the city...Jim

yep, my last one leaked like a sieve right at the center piece of tape in your picture. I ended up putting silcone in between the gasket and the glass AND between the gasket and the steel.

cant wait to see you get on the road again!

Mine leaked in the same spot I fixed it the same way but with urethane. Kind of glad to hear it is a common problem.

Lower, mine was also a urethane sealant, I think it was made by Dow. Will get a pic tomorrow.

Ok here's my Thursday update: I took the truck for a shake down run this morning, truck ran great, but my cruise control would not work. During the accident two wires got cut, we put them back together, so this may be the problem. (More on this later). Since I sometime got over the speed limit my gas milage wasn't the best about 15 miles per gallon. (More on this later)

Pic 1 Taken last night before the guys came over.

Pic 2 Taken at gas station, filled up and reset to 0.

Pic 3 Drove to Mt. Grove, MO, about 42 miles up the road.

Pic 4 Back at gas station, filled up. Drove 85.9 miles. Top speed 80. Avg 61 (including city). Drive time 1 hr 23 mins.

oldman3 05-18-2017 08:21 PM

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Cruise problem, not sure Mark and I did a diagnostic test and everything works as it should.
Green light when turned on, yellow light when set, red when brake is hit and back to yellow with resume. Yet when going down the road, green light is working, but nothing changes on hitting the buttons. Will have to do more checking.

When I got back from trip I noticed brake pad smell, and dust on the wheel. Turns out I have a caliper not returning all the way. So I'm just going to buy two new calipers and change them out. Maybe this will help my gas milage:burnout::waah:...Jim

Oh Boy! good to see that thing moving under it's own power again. I have a feeling your debt to Mark is getting higher. Maybe a Large Steak and a Ice Cold Beer would lower it a little?

Very little, just kidding, we're good. I'm glad I have him around to push the oldman in getting things done. I'm very happy to have it back on the road again...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Hey friends, back in post 1224 or 1225 I mentioned calipers sticking. Got both changed and it feels like it was when first done. Note I did have to do a lot of checking to get the correct calipers for the kit I bought.

Cruise control, Mark said to check the magnets on the driveshaft, which he did. I guess during the accident, something hit one of the magnets and knocked it off, so I only have one. It doesn't get the correct speed signal, so no function.

Tomorrow we head to Springfield for the Mid-American nats, so will take pics and report on the trip later. Everyone have a great Memorial Day...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Ok, here's the update from our trip to Springfield on Friday 5/26. Because of the weather forecast of severe weather Saturday (including baseball size hail). Mark and I decided we would only go for 1 day. Was raining when we left home, but cleared up and was nice the rest of the day. Didn't take a lot of pics only a few, was busy with other stuff. So here's a few pics in next post...Jim

Pic 1 GMC for lower;)

Pic 2 I had a 73 Z28 so I have a soft spot for the 2nd gen Camaro.

Pic 3 Sweet extended cab.

Pic 4 Burb.

Pic 5 Home from show, Drove 237.9 miles @70 mph most of the time. Had about 9 miles of fair ground crusing thru out the day (doesn't help gas milage). Average 16 miles per gal., not great, but I'm happy with the Fitech system.

Couple things I forgot to mention. Had the pleasure of meeting two board members, that have been following my thread. Both working on AD's, but not getting much done and very few postings.

I also had my truck safety inspected and again passed the 23 inspection.

That's it for now...Jim

Thanks for the pic Jim. Looks like a bunch of nice vehicles there. Glad it all went smooth and no baseball hail. It's cool meeting other board members, to be able to put a face to the truck lol.

Jim, Sorry the weather messed you up. Good Pictures of the time you were there. My wife and I tried to surprise you and show up at Springfield but a Nurse where she worked had a problem and Eve had to cover for her. Sounds like we would have had a WET Saturday anyway! The more I drive that Caddy the more I'm Spoiled by the Ride. I hope to get down to see you and your Wife sometime this Summer, later Ray
