Wrongo. It isnt mine. They are 22.5" 2 hole steelies shaved to 22" and painted black. Thats really all I know. I know the guy who did the air ride on it.

Steel wheels cannot be shaved down to 22" the way they do it is just stretch the 22" tire on the rim, the tires seem to hold up. I have seen quiet a few ppl running them.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'd like to see that. I ran auto shops before becoming a machinist. So I've see a few wheels and I just don't see how they could cut that much off a wheel. The wheel it self isn't a 1/2 in think, so how do they cut a 1/4 in off and it still be structurally sound?

They can and do, shave them down. There are many people that advertise doing it. Whether or not they start with some sort of special wheel or not I don't know, but they do it.

They mill down the aluminum wheels because the lip is so thick, Never heard of a steel wheel being done.

Ya, definitely not my style...switching to 1/2ton running gear seems pointless to me also, but I would tow with it. Some of these guys don't want the 8-lug stuff, right?

I havent been able to find a single person that will mill down a steel wheel! Trevor at tnwheelandtire wont even think about it and he has probably the most milling time out of anybody! He is working on getting some 22 inch steel hoops but, that will be a while! I would like to see a pic of the wheel up close. There isnt enough lip to shave on a steel wheel!!! If you take that much off, the tire will never set a bead!

I know, I don't even see how they would have gotten the tire on the wheel with out bending the wheel.

The picture is not showing up for me, so I might be missing somethign here?
But the point is to have a short bed truck, with room behind the seats for people or things.
Personally, I didn't set out with towing in mind, just wanted more room!

PS; I know you can get the room with a Suburban and better turning radius at that, but I (and I assume most the people doing this) want a truck with a bed.

I did the running gear swap mainly for better ride Quality and beleive me its a night and day difference. Plus with half ton you have better wheel/tire options.

:agree:

I wanted half ton stuff for weight savings also....the 3/4 and 1 ton stuff is super heavy. My truck, yes I wanted a truck also to haul the family and the dogs, is going to be my daily driver. I didn't really want a truck that was gonna beat me to death empty, and I don't plan on hauling or towing any heavy loads.

I get the tire/wheel options as well as the weight savings, but what do half ton axles have that make them ride different that 3/4 and 1 ton axles? Springs make the ride, not the axles...

Are you familiar with un-sprung weight or unsprung mass?

Its only unsafe if you get somebody to mill them who has no idea what there doing, only seen one wheel break and it was because whoever milled it took to much off. And it broke when they were mounting the tire.

Theres a ton of lowered duallys with milled down wheels towing loaded 3 car hauler trailers to shows and do it with no problems.

As far as illegal i dont know but i dont see how since theres a few companys that do this.

I'm very familiar with it, on a truck of this size, the only unsprung weight that really makes any effect is the wheels/tires. A Dana 60 and a Dana 44 are not that different in weight with respects to the front axle, and the Corporate 14 rear axle may be considerably heavier, but the braking characteristics are affected in the most miniscule ways because the braking systems and vehicle dynamics/characteristics are not great enough on a vehicle of this size! Heavier axles on these trucks will not increase washboarding or wheelhop! The link you provided really only applies on sports cars, in my opinion anyway!
