Today I re-installed my Ramhorns after having the machine shop guy true them up on some kind of a plane or whatever. He said they were pretty warped but they came out fine. I could tell they had been leaking exhaust for a while when I pulled them, and the gaskets were a crispy "well done". Now, after machining them, I don't need gaskets anymore and the truck is noticeably quieter.
In the past I have painted exhaust manifolds with Rustoleum cold galvanizing compound in a spray can and it doesn't burn off. (It will discolor, but stays put.) This time around I bought a new can and did it again. The stuff used to be more silvery and shiny than it is now which is flat gray. The cap on the can was reflective of that change as well. Here's hoping the new formula is as tough as the old.... |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part IV
After bottoming-out got old quickly, swapped 4" drop springs with 3" drops.
Had started 4" drop non-BBC springs a few years, then added 2.5" CPP modular drop spindles recently. That combo, along with a heavy BBC, doesn't work well. The ride is relatively much better with the 3s. Relatively. |

The strips are plain steel and the bolts are the zinc kit from Classic Industries. The strips were marked Tri-Plus. They are painted Rustoleum satin black. |

My wife wants it to be stained so she can see the grain of the wood, but it is a truck that will be used...I use my truck as a truck also and it is my daily driver so this may be perfect...now how to break it to the wife! :D |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part IV
Swapped out the original old barn door slammers and replaced with gas struts! No more getting body slammed when the wind blows and the doors are open.
Super easy upgrade! Very pleased with this. |
Re: What did you do to your truck today part IV
that looks perfect - looks genuine and as you say not too fancy to actually use it :-)

I use rust oleum satin on oak reduced 50 percent on first coat so it soaked in and 20 percent on the next two you can still see the woodgrain Attachment 2095267[/quote] |

Similar process as above with a gloss black paint (thinned way out). Did this five years ago, and it's held up great, though I don't carry much in the bed.

Re: What did you do to your truck today part IV
Working to solve leaky exhaust issues that I inherited...the [studs] from manifold to exhaust were non-existant, the bolts used needed to be tightened daily, so that had to change. After installing studs, a compression plug that was in the hole for the flapper blew out, had to order that and pull the manifolds to drill out the hole and re-plug...manifolds needed to come of at some point anyway as there was also a leak on the forward exhaust port, so pulled the manifolds and found that the gasket was not breached at the exhaust port as I suspected. Turns out the intake manifold face stood above the exhaust manifold face by a fair amount. The bolts bonding the manifolds together were NOT coming out without a fight (that I did not want to lose), so I applied a little redneck machine shop skills and brought out the belt sander to even the faces out. Lots of steel dust later I had a fairly consistent face ready to reinstall.

Finishing up the install after work today, hope to have her back on the road by dinner time. |

Picked up a very nice cherry picker last night to assist with the '72 front end swap. No Origami folding monkeys here...this thing is substantial.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars-and-...d-Hoist2-L.jpg I had a guy offer to rent it from me on the drive home...makes it an even better investment! |

Picked up the front end from a 72 C10, with torsion bar. Looks like plenty of life left in those rotors, had factory AC/Delco shocks on it so maybe low miles. Gets a power wash this morning and start pulling it apart.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars-and-...dArrives-L.jpg Also scored a nice collapsible tilt-column out of a 67 Riviera with a floor shifter. Was a good day for parts. :) |
