I like the orderliness of the vertical sample, but since there will be a GB superimposed over the US flag, I would go with representational rather than literal. In other words, using the diagonal as a stylistic element, rather than an actual flag depiction.

Spot on.

Also, the maker posted the vertical flag back to front.

Thanks, I like what I got.

Three parcels in the post today.

A nice Union Jack snoody thing for shopping.

A parcel from Michigan containing traded license plates and some cool stickers.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(915).HEIC

And a fascinating and ultimately mind blowing parcel addressed tus:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(328).jpg

Contents to be revealed later.

Now to figure out who sent it.

So back to the random acts of kindness that crosses our paths daily.

Once I opened the parcel, it turned out that the contents put a big grin on my face.

Made in Japan, it does need a head.

I tried fitting some new batteries, and tried the power and siren buttons, none worked.

So, who was the benefactor?

Fil who did all the hard work, driving to fetch the Rezin Rockit for me was the man.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Well, sweltering heat this week, followed by a lot of rain.

Woken at 2.30am on Friday with some water dripping furiously outside my bedroom……. Rain was hammering down outside.

Found this…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(916).HEIC

Put out some plastic buckets and towels and kinda went back to sleep.

Up by 5.30 when the first lodger got up and started opening and closing doors, he is not good at just leaving his bedroom door open when he goes to pee and when in the bathroom, the door has to be shut noisily and locked every time. Seriously.

Greeted by a load of plaster on the floor and bucket half full of water.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(917).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(919).HEIC

So I cleaned up the mess as much as I could and did some day job work.

Later I called One Call Insurance (underwritten by Legal and General) and was told that there were no storms reported in the area, somI could not get any “emergency response “ to secure the roof or inspect what had caused the leak.
I was put on to hold on for a different department, eventually the phone was answered by some random person, who took my details, to be called back later.
24 hours later I am still waiting for a call back.

Later I went to ask Mickey if I could use his extending ladders, and he said no……
He would come and go up instead of me, as he did not want to call the ambulance if I landed on my head.

Typically, he came at about 1.00pm just about the time I get ready to go to my weekly osteopath appointment.

Up he went and the reply was that there were broken tiles and a load of moss in the gulley of the roof.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(920).HEIC

So he came down, we got 4 spare tiles stolen from Stuarts pile two houses down’s stock for his extension build.

Tiles went up, then a bucket, grinder extension cord and Mickey.

I had to leave, filled with fear that he was working alone up there.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(921).HEIC

When I got back the ladder and tools were gone, and Mickey was sitting inside my place, waiting for his cuppa tea.

He said he had removed a half bucket of moss from the gulley, and replaced 4 tiles.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(922).HEIC

Wet and dirty Mickey. Also happy with some pocket money he gets to earn.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(918).HEIC

So after that it rained hard a few more times and overnight, not a drop of rain inside.

In the mean time I wonder if the insurance company will actually make contact with me……..

Or do I just get on with having the repairs done and get on with my life.

Grizz1963 06-20-2021 05:27 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

So when I go walk, ostensibly for my back, but also to get out the house, I take loads of pics, sharing some with a good ceramicist friend in Tulsa Oklahoma

She draws, paints and sculpts too.

This time of year the Poppies are doing really well.

Up at the farm, this is especially true.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(332).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(333).jpg

So Linda prints out a load of the pics and takes themalong to paint when she and her husband go travelling and camping.

This one took her an hour to do from start to finish,

I do admire talented people.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(331).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(330).jpg

While out walking I invariably collect some hedgerow asparagus

Pan fried with a bit of garlic and a dash of olive oil……..

Magic.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(334).jpg

All kinds of sizes, and even the longest ones are super tender.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(335).jpg

Yesterday Sally and I went out in the truck for some shopping and our first “meal out” since lockdown.

Parking the truck up and walking over to pay for the parking for GRZ733 ( foundmyself looking back at it, grin ing and then taking a pic.

It has to be the right car if you get that feeling.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(924).HEIC

Lunch was predictable, but brilliant.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(329).jpg

When the bill came, I noticed the coffees had doubled in price since March 2020 and the Lamachun had gone up by 40p each.

At the new prices, it is still a bargain imho and considering the hardship the hospitality industry has had to face recently, not something that would stop me supporting them

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(923).HEIC

Rain again today, but a few things to do.

No bootfair sadly.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Had my midyear review on Tuesday.

Seems the bosses are happy with what I am doing at the moment, going by the feedback email.

Yesterday was one of those days where I had been working in the morning and by 13.00 it just felt like nothing was happening, so I called the boss and asked to sign a half day leave or just have the afternoon off, he thought about it for a moment, and said to just take the rest of the day off. I actually carried on working till 13.45 and then headed out to mate Darrens engineering shop Unit Engineering for some mental health recharging.

So I took the truck out and headed over to Sheppey.

Always good to see him, catch up with the stuff he is always doing, both cars and engineering and making a living.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(211).JPG

Slow but constant progress on his V8 Beetle build.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(927).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(926).HEIC

After two hours of coffee and chat, both of us felt a lot better, as even the therapist sometimes needs therapy.

I scavenged some round and flat bar from the scrap bin, to be used in my driveway changes.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(925).HEIC

Headed home by 4.30 for dinner that was being made for me by Sally.

Truck making me grin all afternoon.

Looking out the kitchen window last night as I do, often, at the truck, I noticed something was wrong.

Poop.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(929).HEIC

Mounting spot.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(928).HEIC

So the job will be to either find someone to repair it, as an autoglass company, if I can find that, or buy some specialised glue and fixing system.

Dennis uses this in the USA in his bodyshop.

May be available on Amazon though.

Rain forecast for the weekend too.

Grizz1963 06-27-2021 06:18 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Bootfair today was small.

Sally panicked when we stopped and only 1/4 of the field was taken up and likewise parking are nearer 20%

I told her, often when these quiet days have happened, with less people milling around, I have had great days.

Less people also meant less pushing and shoving, and rude non English speakers, thus a chance to look and find stuff in the typical piles made up by spring cleaning or house clearances.

Mate Craig and us got lucky today, with a few great pieces from one guy, everything was £1.00 or less..

Medium sized Crowbar £1.00

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(338).jpg

Grubby, rusty hatchet, £1.00

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(337).jpg

Maybe a bargain of the day for him, glass and chrome bodied courtesy/roof/map light for his 1950 Chevy truck or the 1948 Fleetline. Coat £1.00

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(932).HEIC

Sally bought 3 blue glazed garden pots, and I got a green one, you guessed it…….. £1.00 each. Go price check those.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(938).HEIC

Other items from the same seller included a weird pair of spring loaded, flat beaked pliers, a plumb line and a new padlock with 3 keys and a spring loaded metal punch, all for £1.00

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(931).HEIC

Also at the same seller a small unused spirit level for £1.00 for mate Kevin who loves tape measures and instruments of accuracy.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(336).jpg

We bought a few plants ranging between £2.00 for a nice Rosemary and £1.00 for mint and some shrubs for Sallys new pots.

Other items included a £2.00 dinner lap tray for one lodger, a hand rail £2.00 to be used as towel rail in the lodgers bathroom, a woollen floor rug to replace one I binned recently £2.00
Three Coffee mugs, 20p each, VW one for Craig, Batman for a colleague and large bunny item for my kitchen, size large for Mickey who likes a large mug of tea.
Really nice, but dirty paper towel holder to replace the hateful one I have in the kitchen.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(934).HEIC

So all in all, a decent outing today.

Clean up Craigs hatchet, put away the bits, then carry on digging the second set of holes for the archway on the drive and make up the structure, before the rain really starts to fall.

Grizz1963 06-29-2021 10:00 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Took Friday off as mentioned, also went out in the truck to fetch a long passage carpet runner for Craigs wife, new, unused (the carpet)

Started chatting to the sellers husband as you do, turns put he has a 1963 registered VW Beach Buggy (for sale like all things in life)

He used to be a Land Rover guy for many years, short story long, he sold me a screen for £10.00 which I gave to @glenanderson who was popping down on Sunday to drop off a windscreen for me to use on the Rezin Rockit, as well as some signs from @forkliftfred whom he bought an engine from.

Into the truck it went, along with the passage runner.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(930).HEIC

Saturday afternoon I started on another distraction that has been years in the want/planning.

An arch over the bottom of the driveway that once overgrown will help create a visual line and block the line of sight down to the garage, looking from the street.

Basic idea, just to get the feel for what it will look like.

Ot should be 8’2” tall on the underside, with a pair of 15” trellises front and rear that will be removable, either by unhooking from clips, or unscrewing if it seems to need extra stability.

Not at all like this by the way.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(935).HEIC

Measured out.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(936).HEIC

Hedge carefully cut back to create a recess, so that actual drive is not compromised for when cars or trucks come to the bottom. Also allowing the caravan to be removed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(933).HEIC

18” deep holes dug both sides for the small holding foundations on the uprights.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(339).jpg

After that, my back asked me to slow down, so I started a fire instead…….

You know what happened next of course.

Both current lodgers were in, So Sally and I decided a BBQ was a perfect way to spend the late afternoon.

Drinks, Pretzels, chat…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(945).HEIC

Fire, food.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(937).HEIC

Served.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(946).HEIC

Happy, all of us, it was a good meal, music and alcohol.

David the Electrical engineering managers wife and kids are in Vietnam, last saw them February last year, that must suck.
Interestingly, he mostly works in Saudi Arabia, Emirates and other places where alcohol is less used, and as a habit does not use alcohol.

Anthony is a retired Royal Engineers RSM who runs his own training company. t2p.co.uk

David may stay a year for his full contract, or if Saudi Arabia and the rest opens up, he may go back there sooner, Anthony is sorting his life and could be here for an indeterminate time.

In the mean time, the are good company.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(345).jpg

Sunday was Bootfair and a bit of together time with Sally, making stuff.

More later.

Grizz1963 06-30-2021 04:41 AM

So a few little things along the way.

Cleaned up Craigs hatchet a bit.

From this.

To this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(941).HEIC
Via some of this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...pix/001(1).MOV

Also added a 50p bootfair handle to the cast aluminium head mate Andy cast two years ago.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(336).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(342).jpg

Done.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(943).HEIC

In other news, my local village has a secret person who is crocheting toppers for post boxes and bollards.

It is proving really popular, and people are leaving them in place, which is great to see.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(220).JPG

Anthony my one current lodger has a business to print stuff, like emergency bags, T-shirts etc.

He offered to print me a pic of the S10 on canvas.

Brought these samples back Monday night.

I need to frame the canvas next.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(944).HEIC

Last night he brought home an even bigger print.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(947).HEIC

Pretty chuffed with these.

Just need to frame and stretch them now.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Sunday was a good day to spend tome with wanted to make gifts for her three best friends.

Blue Tit nesting “boxes”

I have two nesting boxes that have breeding pairs returning every year.

These are obviously not boxes in the traditional sense, but they should attract birds.

I made her do some of the helping, which really did pi$$ her off a bit, especially when my camera comes out, she hates cameras.

Also she does not have the technique or force to drive those screws into the oak that I used, despite pilot holes being drilled.

So I calculated, measured and cut for three boxes and then assembled them one at a time.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(939).HEIC

The tea pots were getting glued down with some special magical glue.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(942).HEIC

Different sizes, as thats how you buy from the bootfair, they come at around £2.00 each.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(940).HEIC

Progress.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(341).jpg

Lids glues down on the front porches.

The front doors need to be painted pastel colours after gluing into place

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(340).jpg

Sunday evening @glenanderson popped in to drop off some signs from @forkliftfred and the front screen from his Land Rover.

Glen took the screen I got last week and went home as it was raining and his day had been a long one.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(344).jpg

Screen for the Rezin Rockit

Ebay seller may be hoping for a sale.

I like that.

At £2k it is a touch steep for me, but unique enough.

Chassis is a 1971 and of course being a Q plate does not bother me.

MOT expired 2006 which is a long time ago.

Mine expired at an unknown date, first registered 1991

I think this one could be a Filipino kit, imported and fitted to a Q plated chassis.

But hey….. what do I know.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Busy weekend, working on the arch over the driveway.

Because of my back, progress is slow, but amazingly, the amount of work I did on Saturday and Sunday was way more than any day in the last three months.

Osteopath and gentle exercise by walking 2km most days, seems to have allowed some recovery.

I will do the archway write up in one when it is completed. I have one more piece to build and mount, along with the day job.

Saturday Sally painted the nesting teapot doors, a nice shade of yellow.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(951).HEIC

Resulting in a nice finish after she waxed all the wood twice with a nice beeswax based wood treatment.

Her friends should be happy.

You will note that one is missing a lid.

Sunday bootfair it was on the list of stuff to find, a lid.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(348).jpg

Sunday bootfair was minimal, possibly 15% of its usual size, due to threatening rain.

I only got to spend £2.20

20p for a broken sugar bowl, which donated its lid for box no 3

And £1.00 each for a bag of steel wire staples, and yes, we still use them.

Also a bag of random sized split pins for £1.00 which was great, gain as our older cars, especially American stuff, still uses split pins.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(952).HEIC

Happy with the result of the 20p lid.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(950).HEIC

Also went out in the truck to go looking for some cement, but two hardware stores had zero stock.

Imdid manage to spend £168.00 on a large electrical pressure cleaner.

If it lasts s well as the last one did, I will be very happy.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(353).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(352).jpg

Created a nice obstruction to pi$$ off speeding freaks that do 50+ mph in the 30 zone in front of my place, a small win.

Before reversing the truck back down the drive.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(957).HEIC

And suddenly the weekend was over again.

But pleased with what I got done.

And driving the truck.

Grizz1963 07-08-2021 04:50 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

So a quick photodump.

The idea was to create a arch for the garden to the right to grow into and over so that it partly camouflages and draws attention away from the garden.

Recycled timber was free.

Screws expensive, cement overpriced, and paint paid for before.

The rest mostly labour and using stuff paid for before.

Total cost, probably under £80.00

You saw the 450mm deep holes go down before.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(339).jpg

I decided to sandwich two beams per post. Cut to length and screwed securely.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(954).HEIC

Test fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(349).jpg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(350).jpg

I also used some of the blackened sections to create a ladder for each side.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(351).jpg

Painted, thanks to Sally carrying on with the paint while I built no 2.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(953).HEIC

On Sunday Sally worked, so I placed the uprights in the holes, alone, my back is recovering its strength, though the damage is permanent, I am moving easier and better every day compared to three months ago.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(354).jpg

NextI made a set of cross beams up. The front gets a wide one tomcreate the illusion of size and sheer bulk, spindly would not work.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(224).JPG

Next up , squaring and levelling it all out, then anchoring in position.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(958).HEIC

Followed by cross beams.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(955).HEIC

This was followed by screwing into position the individual cross pieces, as the whole lot would have been to big, heavy and unwieldy to put up alone.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(956).HEIC

I knew I wanted to have a front section hanging down, but removable for when the welding caravan gets removed finally.

So mocked up with a piece of trellis fencing, just to help visualisation.

Realised it needed to be a bit shorter.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(960).HEIC

Final height.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(959).HEIC

I tried to get some cement to mix for the foundations and neither B&Q, nor Wickes or Homebase had any.

Went to my local village hardware store on Monday afternoon………

No cement, but had some bags of “Post Mix” at £10.00 per 20kg bag.

Trust me, not impressed, but little choice, so I paid my £40.00 for the convenience.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(355).jpg

Tuesday afternoon I also decided to try out my new pressure cleaner.

NVH is bad, trigger is stiff, no lock on it, oscillating head does a weird thing where it goes through frequencies that seem to change the effect.

Not sure it is worth the money at £168.00 vs the £110.00 model.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(357).jpg

My fig tree, propagated last year has produced one fig, pretty chuffed with that.

Glad that you're getting out for your daily walk and that your back is improving. I chuckled a little bit when you talked about the rug that you threw away, because I'm so accustomed to your resourcefulness. I figured it must have really served its time, haha. I sometimes shake my head at myself, you, call it resourcefulness, thank you.

I am not sure I would be that flattering.

BUT….. a lot of my toys are possible due to a sensible approach to spending.

I was telling someone recently, a free table, worth $50.00 that I could use, released that cash as I was not spending it put my pocket.

And like a used car, it is only new till the ckeck clears at the bank, then you have amused car worth 10-20% less than before you paid for it.

Next job was to make the lower valence up.

Again, made as I went along.

Cut first, measure second.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(969).HEIC

All of this has been a pain to do solo, as it is high, the ladder is uninspiring, and I worry about my back letting me down, well crashing me to thw floor really.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(967).HEIC

The whole morning there was a Robin keeping me company, chatting and making an angry noise, I guess he has a nest somewhere nearby.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(961).HEIC

These should ensure I can dismantle the valence later, to remove the caravan with ease.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(964).HEIC

Once squared up and screwed together, it was time for the post-crete to -be added to the holes, along with a load of water to set it off.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(968).HEIC

Done.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(963).HEIC

Followed by some decorations

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(965).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(225).JPG

I also cleared the excess wood off the drive, in under the carport.

And put up some road signs, andmy battle weary Stars n Stripes.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(971).HEIC

Later on the Robin was sitting atop the structure, singing away merrily.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(972).HEIC

Went to bed at 12,30 and by 04.10 the night was over.

Not ideal, but at least I took yesterday and today off work.

Sunrise was nice.

My weekend is here, loads of clearing up to do today, and maybe mounting the dentists light under the carport too.

One for Craig, along with the Coke trucks and a small beach buggy.

He is a VW aircooled and Coke guy of course.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(359).jpg

A nice carved wooden cat for mate Kevins new courtyard garden

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(360).jpg

And for myself a set of license plates for my collection.

No idea where they are from.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(358).jpg

So total haul included.

Wooden picture frame, unused £1.00
Wooden blue star £1.00
Wooden carved cat £2.50
60’s Beach Buggy £4.00
Three toy cars £1.00
4 teapots, to be used as Blue Tit nests £1.00 each
vintage Porcelain bathroom light pull £3.00
License plates £2.00 of both.
Three Poppy scarves unused, for £1.00
Half a box of gutter bolts for a cart iron bench build £2.50

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(975).HEIC

The rest of today was spent clearing out the carport, followed by sorting out Mickeys and my communal lumber into size, type and length, clearing the shared alleyway about 80%

There are still two pallets worth of aerated breeze blocks that we need to find a new home for in the alleyway though.

Once done, I want to build some decent shelving and support doe all the wood to be stored, giving me back the carport for the Rezin Rockit build.

Decent weekend, almost over.

Our philosophies on utilizing used items are quite similar. I try not to accumulate for the sake of accumulation, except in limited circumstances with a few areas of things I collect. I would rather get something and renew it to use for a need I have, then get something new and watch it accumulate scratches and dents in use. Somehow the drive for improvement is what makes it worthwhile for me.

Are you planning on establishing a giant colony of birds residing in those teapot nests? It seems, that with a few more, you could be selling them off your tailgate at the boot fair. I'm glad that you explained what they were and how they go together, because a blue tit nest conjures up images of a much different venue and situation.

I do accumulate, but it is always available for anyone to use.
Though a clean up is needed from time to time.
Every time I reuse, repurpose or use free materials, it puts money back in my pocket to use on other things.
And yes, improvement is a great feeling too.

I certainly wont make the nests for selling, they are all earmarked for friends. Including Mickey’s wife next door.
Blue tits at Hooters?

Some of you may remember the gokart chassis I bought a while ago.

Barstool racer is the objective

Not shortened as is traditional but full length with a small pickup bed over the motor.

So how many horses should I look for in a motor.

No need to be a rip snorting turbo NOS driven nutter mobile.

But needs to be reasonably capable of drawing around 150kg around a field.

I see Briggs and Stratton motors on rotovators with 3.5 hp and bigger on other stuff.

Go on…….

Don’t kill me.

Up at 05.00 (old age, sore body, restless mind) showered, shaved, mug of tea, quick scan of internet etc.

Down at the bootfair by 6.15 and field was already full, with the line down the side of the exit route being filled with vendors.

Actually not a lot for me, but still had a nice few hours and home before 09.00 for brekkie.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(996).HEIC

Total haul.

Smalls.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(997).HEIC

Glazed plant pot £2.00
3/4 of 12 liter fence paint £3.00 and a nice chat.
Firemans helmet, unused, with working speaker £1.00
Another teapot £1.00
Aluminium drain downpipe corner and a gate slider £2.00
King Dick 50p
Metal sign 50p for shed.
4x VW Beetle/Baja’s £1.00
Union Jack Mini - Free
Small tools all for £2.00 from nice seller with teapot.
Includes Oil filter chain spanner, vintage pliers, multi-tool for closed boxes, two very flat spanners, two beautiful vintage drill bits, rawlplug tool (punch) 3 micro drillbits, 2x tyre pressure gauges.

So that was the haul, not big but nice to be out and the fence paint alone makes up for the rest.

More random reports later.

Hot out today.

Grizz1963 07-19-2021 06:49 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Monday morning.

Yesterday was a hot one. I cut my one side hedge and half of Mickeys yesterday. Not clever on a hot day, but needed to get it done.

The last week had been a flurry of random, but focussed action.

Lucky the Chevy truck is patient and loyal.

Loads happening, nothing related to the C10 though.

And it may be a while still.

However, after my back really screwing my life up for a year and stopping all progress on all projects, it seems to be on the mend very slowly.

It will not heal in the conventional way, but with a bit of clever use of planning, leverage etc, it is allowing me to do some stuff.

The Rezin Rockit, GoKart and a few other things are all awaiting their turn.

As is usual here, my first stop when restarting my life, is to take stock of stuff.

So a clear up and clear out was in order.

The scooter I got from Craig in 2019 found a new name on its V5c when I gave that away.

Followed by clearing out two pallets of breeze blocks, given to mate Neil. Amazing how fast stuff moves when you give it away.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(984).HEIC

So on Tuesday Neil came with his Transit van and his 13 year old grandson, to whom I had offered the Italjet Scooter. Harley had thought it over and decided he would rather build a car for when he is 17 which is a wise move. So the scooter went onto FB Marketplace and was gone, collected and ownership changed in less than an hour.

We loaded all the blocks in.

As far as it could go, so Harley and I carried the blocks through, and Neil packed them, his back is also knackered.

Nearly 150 of them.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(986).HEIC

I tried to make him take some more stuff but he declined mHarley took a very good office chair that was surplus for his own bedroom.

Walking around looking at the C10 and other stuff, Neil asked what next, so I said a new pair of fenders needed to be bought and imported……

He looked at the old ones, blasted and primed and said that if I got some patch panels, he would give them a go at repairing.

Of course I had the panels and rear supports for years.

So as a “Favour Trade” he took the fenders away and will be welding them up for me.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(985).HEIC

Pretty good result, even though not planned at all, life has it’s own way of keeping the books balanced I guess.

Next job was clearing more of the alleyway in order to build some storage space for all the lumber in the carport.

New pressure washer worked well, I cleaned the walls (they are not sealed against the garage wall, and a leak in the gutter, blus some weather and rain getting through there, plus all rain off the garage and carport actually flowing down the alleyway and out the back to the farm had left moss on the walls on both sides, of course the spray ends up on the roofing too, so I ended up cleaning all four sides of the alleyway

These plus more needed to be processed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(983).HEIC

Before cleaning on Tuesday evening after work

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(361).jpg

After.

I also discovered 5 sheets of nasty/cheap Chinese packing crate ply, all badly rotten on the bottom edge, so stripped all the rot back with the pressure cleaner, as well as both the front and rears.

Then let it all dry, and cut the sheets down to remove the rot, as they had a job waiting too.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(991).HEIC

I took Friday as a leave day in order for Mickey and I to be able to knock out the shelving and racks.

Starting at 8.30 we worked nonstop, just grabbing tea and sodas through the day, finishing by 4.30pm

This included feeding a 45 gallon drum incinerator all day with so much of the offcast bits, and wood found to be damaged over the years.

I also have a havit of using the worst bits first and then the better. Mickey loves using the bigger longer, pretty bits, so it was bit of a job to stop him grabbing the best bits first, but he got my motivation quickly enough.

These upright posts are around £10.00 each if you buy them, they came from a deck that was lifted and you can see, undamaged, the rest if the wood, likewise.

We used a load of turbo screws, and the 120mm hex head decking screws used in the heavy stuff was all rescued from the deck that was dismantled by Mick.

So a lot of this between us, and with multiple tools, we could both measure, cut and fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(990).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(989).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(988).HEIC

Two cement mixers tucked into their custom space.

All the shelving was planned around the mixers that are bulky and also an aluminium table frame Mick wanted to incorporate as another dry working space outside, as it saves on getting the driveway/garage/carport full of dust and sawdust.

So this was Friday afternoon 4.30 and Mick was off to the pub for a well deserved pint.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(987).HEIC

Saturday morning by 08.00, Sally was here and the three of us started packing the wood from the carport into the racks and shelves.

I have an ability to visualise and calculate in space, which neither Mickey nor Sally can do, and in fact she was stressing.

By 11.00 all the wood, some steel etc was out of the carport.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(992).HEIC

Mick was already working at the table making a trellis for his sunny corner at the house.

Made me grin that he was straight onto using the work table, which has 45mm planks and a sheet of ply on it.

Packed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../001(993).HEIC

And the carport filled with toys that all need motors and transmissions found and fitted

Good work! I can't picture where that covered breezeway is, but I'm guessing it must be close to both your property and Mickey's? Good work on turning loose of some stuff that you had decided not to use. With the lumber, I always struggle with how much of that to keep around. I have a few stacks. In our garage growing up, there were many many sticks of different dimensions that remained there the entire process of my growing up. Hard to know how much to keep available and how much to clear out. I figure you're on the right track if you do some of each. I had to look up breeze blocks. I did not know that breeze was a synonym for ash there, what some people call cinder blocks here. The actual construction term we have for all materials of that type is CMU or concrete masonry unit.

I really enjoy your replies.

Thought through, considered, helpful and certainly a response I always look forward to.

If look from the house down the garden, behind the secret garden you find the garage, the carport is placed at 90’ to it on the front, garage is built on the rear boundary. Mickey lives to the right of me. So in 2011 we decided to remove a big section of hedge (the hedge is formally mine in England) and create a shared undercover storage area with each of us giving 3 foot down the side wall of my garage.

As for turning stuff loose, I have often turned stuff loose because someone else needed it more at the time, in the hope and knowledge that there will be another some time.

Lumber, yes, I have pieces of scrap that I have used for years rather than cut something good up.
Mickey will cut a new piece of wood, rather than change a design to use a smaller/shorter piece and even last week I had to keep redirecting him. Just because it is free, doesn’t mean you need to burn through it randomly.

I think the breeze in Breeze block implies lightness too.

Good investigation though.

So after clearing the carport, I also removed the solid wrought iron gate that had been there since 2011 between my and Mickeys yards and the shared alley storage.

This left a large hole, 6x4 foot, to be dealt with, mainly to slow the wind down when one works there in winter.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1003).HEIC

Looking from Mickeys side after I cut the hedge on his side you can see the odd shaped hole. Nothing is straight as it was never planned to be a doorway.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1000).HEIC

When I gathered the wood there were four plywood shelves, all 9 inches wide. Adding them to another sliver of ply have me the width needed.

The eagle eyed amongst you will notice the hole differs by 50mm top to bottom as the post originally fitted to create the end of the roofing sheets that hang down from the top of the structure was a twisted piece of lumber.
So that means I needed to create a door which fitted the hole, and the post will be modified to compensate for the pi$$ed post.

So Monday evening after work I quickly slapped a door together.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1010).HEIC

Mickey cannot resist the noise of a circular saw or power drill.

So fresh from a shave and shower, smelling like a teenager out to score first base, he was straight aroundf after he had had his dinner.

Supervising as always.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1005).HEIC

Screws penetrated by about 3mm so I had to cut them all back with the grinder.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1006).HEIC

After that I fitted it in the triangulated hole, and realised it needed a bit more work to fit, and with the weight, it needs a small jockey wheel.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1002).HEIC

So once that was done I shut shop, made a pizza (disappointing) and a shower.

Plans were to get back to it today after work.

So my day was mostly spent on the phone or at my desk.

Late afternoon, the weather was still warm and dry.

So I quickly painted the front and rears. Amazingly it dried in the time it took to make a coffee and drink it.

Sally popped in around 5.30 and helped me lay the stripes……..

Anyone figure what I am doing ??

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(364).jpg

Yes, you guessed right.

And there is a formula for getting it right.

Ratios.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ix/001(70).PNG

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ix/001(71).PNG

I used the 1120mm or 42” top width to calculate in order to get the Stars n Stripes ratio as close as possible to perfect.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1009).HEIC

Then opened the last of my red Hammerite smooth.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(363).jpg

Very tempted to do a distressed flag, but thats more effort than what I felt like.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(227).JPG

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1008).HEIC

Used the last bit of paint to paint over the damage on my welding trolley.

Managing to pour the last of the paint over myself, my one foot and the driveway.

Man I cursed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1007).HEIC

I went out earlier to check the paint and it is touch dry.

So tomorrow I will pull the tape off.

Then I just need the 50 stars to complete the job.

Coffee time, then I wont sleep.

Grizz1963 07-21-2021 05:58 AM

Went out for a haircut yesterday early. Our local-ish guy is there from 07.00 for people who need to come and go early.

Walking back to the truck I was again struck by the fact that it always makes me grin.

I like this thing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(362).jpg

Last night late I got a message from a South African expatriate living in Rhode Island that he had got me one of the hardest USA state plates to get. Posting it out to me this week for my collection.

Pretty pleased to say the least.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(229).JPG

Removed the tape from the red bands and masked the blue panel for the stars.

It may take a while to get the stars to use on it but pleased so far.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1012).HEIC

Last sunny day before the weather swings back to a load of rain.

Grizz1963 07-23-2021 04:18 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

So another long overdue job done after work last night was to fit the Dentists lamp in the carport for inspection of engines and other detailed items when you need a super light source.

Thanks to Paul “Oblertone” who brought it up to me and left it with his daughter in Essex to collect a few weeks ago.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1014).HEIC

So I prepared two 100mm x 50mm pieces of wood to fit between the roof beams, and painted and screwed them together.

Then found my 65mm drill bit (call it what you want) to drill a hole through for the adjustable hanging post to go through, as well as the wiring from the lamp to mains.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1013).HEIC

One of those purchases made years ago from a member on UKGSER who needed to move it on. At £80.00 it was and is a bargain.

My other 1950’s drillpress has ceased to function, tripping the power when you turn it on.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1018).HEIC

Used the rattle gun to run the coach screws in to hold the mounting plate in place, and cut the excess 10mm off the rear with a cutting disc.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1019).HEIC

Mounted with some more free hardware.

Its not going anywhere.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1017).HEIC

Light fitted.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1022).HEIC

Mickey of course came around to check up on me after he had his dinner.

He liked it.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1021).HEIC

Tucked away.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1015).HEIC

And seen in perspective.

Does not get in the way of headroom.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1020).HEIC

Of course I had to go see just how bright it is after sunset as well.

I think it works.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1016).HEIC

One dentists junk is another mans treasure.

Dismantle mobility scooters rear end tonight.

Grizz1963 07-24-2021 05:48 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Yesterday afternoon I managed to sort one of my treasure piles out.

All the steel “off cuts” that I had stashed in the garage went out to one shelf in the new wood store. After I rearranged some wood and added a few brackets for very long 8 meter lengths of plastic pipe.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(366).jpg

Next job was to remove the motor, brackets, controller module and other junk as well as rear axle from the mobility scooter chassis.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(368).jpg

The gearbox opened, I removed all the gears and closed that up again.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(367).jpg

Cut the centre post off, all other loose tabs and ground it all smooth.

Then reassembled the rear axle under the chassis.

Rake added.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1023).HEIC

Current thinking is to lengthen the chassis.

Possibly source a cheap go kart rear axle, narrow it and refit with wide tyres.

OR…….. (and I need advice here)

Use a regular driven lawnmower rear axle and whatever mechanisms are in it, to fit a mower engine and its bits to make a simple, slow (safe) little ride on.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1024).HEIC

Thanks to @forddan68 for picking up a Schwinn kiddies tricycle for me on his way home last night.

No, I have no idea, I just like them. They are never cheap, and looking at the condition of this one, they should be cheap.

Needs a ton of cleaning up and paint.

But hopefully be a nice little side project

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...ix/001(72).PNG

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(365).jpg

I am thinking red and Lime green.

Grizz1963 07-25-2021 04:58 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Well, going in some direction, just not sure if it is the right one.

Yesterday I had given to Sally for putting up with me.

So it was a bit of shopping, lunch and coffee at the Turkish in Chatham.

Also some food shopping.

My day was made when I found some USA made Cajun spice, I love cooking with it, as does Sally.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1026).HEIC

Before we went out, I was looking on Marketplace for a gokart rear axle and some wheels.

Found a seller who had a load of plastics and brackets, and messaged him on the off chance that he may have more parts to sell, turns out he has a ton of parts, mini moto engines, quad engines etc.

But he also had a rear axle, with sprocket, disc and bearings plus carrier brackets and a spare wheel.

Cost?

£50.00 which is way out of my cheap ass league, not negotiable, but if you add up the value, I guess it is still a good price for what it is.

So he messaged while we were having lunch that I could collect.

Went there at 3.00pm after shopping, spent 45 minutes talking to him, Sally sat in the car.

Then back home with the bounty.

Sally went home to water her garden and do a few things.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(230).JPG

Quicky mock up shows I will have to cut about 250mm or 10” out the axle and re~weld it to fit better in proportion to the front end, which I still like.

And once the chassis is lengthened it should come into proportion.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(369).jpg

While down at the garage, mate Craig started to interfere from 80 miles away.

Sallys son was bringing back the mini moto I had given her for the grandson.

He had partially dismantled it, as it was not running right according to him, only running well on choke.

He had also tried unsuccessfully to “govern” it to slow it down for Harry.

Then gave up.

So in stead of buying some small used motor, I got given bck some small motor that I paid for already.

He brought is back and chatted for a while, then went off again.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1025).HEIC

So this is where @craigrk comes in.

“Why don't you build it as a TRIKE as you like different, that will be different” he asked me via text.

You see, friends……. Always creating havoc.

So I will take a look and see what a single rear wheeled creation works like, or else I will remove and add just the motor to the ride, narrowing the gokart axle and going that route.

Sally was back by 7.00pm and rather than sit indoors drinking or eating in front of the telly, we did all the cutting and prep for 4 more Blue Tit nests.

To be completed today, and when I get more Soudal Crystal adhesive.

Bootfair was cancelled due to weather forecast.

Thanks for the compliment. I enjoy being tapped in to how a fellow enthusiast lives out his enthusiasm in a place that is somewhat similar and yet so different from where I live. I envy your license plate collection. It's broader than mine, includes ones from states I don't have, and I live here. I made a rule for mine that I've only broken once. And that is that I don't spend money on the plates. I need to either find them, acquire them via parts or vehicle purchases, or be given them. I broke down once and bought six plates for $12 because it had a state that I didn't have, haha. I guess you got to cut yourself some slack sometimes. That dentist light is going to come in really handy. But just seeing it in your pictures, my heart started to beat faster and I got this chemical smell memory. I don't like the dentist. Let me rephrase that, my dentist is a conscientious and nice guy. I don't like what he has to do to me. I will be interested in how your cart works out.

No bootfair, so a very lazy, slow start.

I don't think I ever had breakfast at 10.00am and then watched some Olympics with Sally.

Eventually made it to the shop.

Ad made some more birds next houses for Sally, every screw had to have a 1.5mm pilot hole as it is thin, nasty, IKEA pine bookshelf wood.

Once done, I set her off to start varnishing them with the brush she chose 10mm wide.

And I made a frame for one of the canvas prints, Anthony the one lodger made for me.

Done, as happy as I need to be.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1029).HEIC

Sally carried on painting.

But left at 13.00 to go cook Uncle Bob the hoarders meals for three days, and get ready for a BBQ we were headed to at 3.00pm

In the mean time I started to place bits together.

Rear wheel covered in a wooly hat.

Yup, I like that so far.

My collection is primarily made up of trades, and collection on my travels.
I buy if the price is below $3.00 and it is interesting enough.

Dentists are a necessary evil, sadly.

A few random things.

Not everyones interest, but hopefully something for everyone.

About 8 years ago I built this double nesting box.

Depending on the season, the blackbirds use it every year, and some other birds have built a next in the rear section.

Sunday night it came down.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1033).HEIC

Note the neat, weaved nest, incorporating moss etc.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1034).HEIC

Rebuilt.

Blackbird mansion,

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1032).HEIC

And the other side, open for pigeons or whatever birds prefer an open, eaves type space.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1031).HEIC

Followed by a nice sunset.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1036).HEIC

Today I had to pick up an order and an eBay purchase.

Soudal Crystal adhesive for the blue tit Teapot nests.

On the way home I popped in at Uncle Bob’s to see a couple of motors he has.

£50.00 buys a Honda, no centrifugal clutch.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1035).HEIC

Or a B&S motor with centrifugal clutch, but V-Belt drive.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1037).HEIC

So options for the barstool racer.

The other item was 50 vinyl cutout stars to use for the gate.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1041).HEIC

Quite challenging to be honest.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(231).JPG

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1042).HEIC

Really hard rain came down.

Nice and dry under the roof too.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/001(372).jpg

And finally a coat of blue enamel.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1043).HEIC

Lets hope the stars come off easily enough once dried.

And also that the positioning is good enough to look like a cartoon style flag.

Not an easy job, placing the stars.

Getting questioned about this door I am making, and the orientation of the stars and stripes.

So here are the reasonings.

Also remember, it is not a factory made, perfectly proportioned door. The hole is actually irregular, so I needed to just eyeball it and try get it looking a bit cartoonlike.

If you then go and look at the protocols for how the flag is flown, draped, or hung in various situations (and many people do not know these things about their own flags, including the Union Jack that has a top and bottom as well) you will find that the Union has to be to the left when applied as I am doing.

Hope this helps.

There's a right and a wrong way to hang the flag vertically.

Don't hang your flag backwards, upside down, or in another inappropriate fashion. If you're hanging your flag vertically (like from a window or against a wall), the Union portion with the stars should go on the observer's left. Never dip the flag to any person or anything.

History of the American flag - American flag layout

US flag has over 245 years of history. Our flag size calculator presents only one of 44 designs that the official American banner has had over these years.

It all started in December 1775, with the very first pattern that incorporated a Union Jack (UKemoji.jpg) into a field full of white and red stripes.
The second design in 1777 brought a very anticipated change - a union full of stars each representing a US states (there were only 13 of them at the time!). This US flag design consisted of 13 red & white stripes and the same number of stars.
Each flag that followed didn't last long - the US was continually expanding, and new states (and stars!⭐) were constantly being added.
💡 Americans always introduced new flags on the 4th of July!

The current flag was created in 1960 after the addition of Hawaii, the only island state located outside of North America. That was when the 50th star was finally placed in the union, creating the everlasting image we know today (which has specified American flag proportions).

Quick bunch of pics.

Went down to the garage this morning early.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1045).HEIC

Started to pull off the stickers, being that the plywood is as rough as it is, I expected some paint seeping under the stickers.

Not much of a problem though, as it is a gate/door in rear of the carport.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1046).HEIC

Result.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1044).HEIC

Mate Fil “Sparkplug” asked about a handle……

Of course, as removed from a disabled public toilet.

We needed it more.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1047).HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1049).HEIC

And just placed in position.

Needs the frame to be made up, then door hung.

Plan is to add a small wheel to the underside.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...001(1048).HEIC

This afternoon during my lunch break I cleared the deck, and then after work quickly pressure cleaned it.

Taken the day off tomorrow, another long weekend, Sally is off too.

So plan if it stays dry, is to put a coat of wood sealer and stain on, followed by another coat once dried.

The flag turned out nice. It's always frustrating to get a tip after the fact. But it's too good of a tip to not pass along. The way to avoid the seepage that you got under the vinyl stars is possible two ways. One by spraying the blue on and typically the spray would not force itself under the edges of the vinyl which would basically be a spray "shadow". When brushing the paint on, the one I learned from painters is that you paint the edges of the tape line (in this case vinyl stars) with the base color first so that what seeps under the vinyl is the white. Let that dry and your edges are sealed so that you can paint the blue over top. And no blue will seep under because the white already did the seeping. Make sense? Regardless, you did a nice job on it. Lots of good detail in the new carport.
