So in today’s exciting episode, work proceeded in 0’C or 32’F on the drive, with a chilly light breeze to accompany proceedings.

Drained the water from the cooling system.

Earlier in the day, mate Martin and I had met in a layby so I could raid his scrap bin in his van……

I was headed to my local nut n bolt guy to get some bits to create an adjustable stop for the gas pedal to push against the firewall.

This should do the job, once shaped, cut to size and welded in place.

Late start for @nickwheeler and I today.

I had to go 25 miles from here to the other side of Maidstone to go look at something.

Then back here, run about and get so e stuff sorted and also prepared.

With all the cold recently, the carport has a ton of condensation, as did the S10 for some reason, leaving the inside of the windscreen fogged up.

So I opened the door and left the truck to breathe.

Coming out the house later, I saw this……..

Back to the Rezin Rockit, some more small jobs left to get wrapped up.

First thing was to create a mounting point for a return stop for the clutch.

Welded in place and, trying to help, I also managed to get the other spring from last weekend, hooked into the pedal and mounted to the steering column.

It has a really soft, firm return action.

Another “double check” job was to see that the second “reverse lense” was not actually in use, as the plan was to convert it to a rear fog light, till I discovered the slimline unit I had stashed away and that got fitted.

Another job for today was to tidy away the wiring loom and to extend a few wires so nothing was under tension.

Just on bolting down an earth, it ended up in Nicks hand, so a quick tacking with the welder saw. Progress.

One môre precision job to get done.

Needs two sets of hands.

This contact adhesive is brutally unforgiving.

Then do the cowl over the instrumentation.

Fit the switches then fit the dash to the car.

Brought it all indoors to warm up and dry out

They are meant to play a tune, but the set os made up of two sets and I could not get it to do more than make a noise.

Now for all the clever IT and programming types.

Mate Martin popped in this week and added his clever machine to see if he could reset the Service needed notification.

No fault codes read, but failed to cancel the service needed code.

If it is for the oil change, then it is
turn key to on, press gas pedal to floor 3 times in like 3-4 secs, then hit start. It should blink a bit then reset (5K is the factory setting.) and go out. I know with me, it took 2 or 3 trys sometimes. The fastness of the gas pedal flooring plays a big part on whether it resets. Far as I know if it is for something else, it should should up as a code or warning somewhere.

Funny how life and distractions can get in the way of getting small jobs done.

The vinyl for the dash did not really settle r smoothen out this week.

Yesterday I brought in some ply to work on indoors, 4-6’C is not ideal, and the damp chill in the air sucks too.

Laying out the two pieces that needed covering on my just big enough piece of material.

Cut off the piece for the instrument surround.

Industrial strength contact adhesive goes off in 2 minutes, the contact and pray.

Glue and then staples to Doubly secure the rear, while adding some tension.

And not too bad, the curves mean a load of pie0cuts to keep the tension low and getting full coverage of the cowl piece.

Next up was coffee and ginger nuts, a good way to procrastinate on the job that had me petrified, in order to scrape together my slipping courage.

So I laid a bed sheet over the plywood, stapled the one end down with multiple staples (thanks @nickwheeler for the machine) and tensioned it all and stapled the other end.

Then laid the vinyl down and stapled both ends down.

This way , I was effectively removing one risk factor though it would probably not help much.

Still, not moving, meant I was going to risk laying the dashboard down alone.

I also practiced laying it down a few times, in case that helped when the glue was ready.

With the glue down on both surfaces, I managed to mate the two surfaces, and it worked.

Mickey came knocking at 9.00pm He had received a courier parcel on my behalf.

Contents was one Vauxhall Nova sedan rear lights.

What an amazing bit of human kindness from the guy who gave and couriered it to me, asking only for a donation to a charity.

Sometimes life just keeps giving.

Mate Fil “Sparkplug” came to visit last night on his way home from a few days working at his company offices in Deal to go back to Cambridge.

Ostensibly to to pick up 12 inches/300mm of railway line that I managed to get for him and @craigrk via good friend Woodside.

We also ended up going to the garage and looking over a few Grizzmakes projects and he got to see and hear the Rezin Rockit for the first time since fetching it for me in Scotland.

Some of the happenings are being kept on ice as part of the YouTube channel development, but to say that we were laughing like kids is an understatement.

Fil had brought me some gifts as well.

Perfectly pitched at the man who “needs” nothing.

Cutting discs (to go with Sally’s grinder) and some license plates for my collection, both of them unusual and exactly the ones I would have selected for myself.

Busy day for work, but it is the weekend.

Plan is to see if I can get the Rezin Rockit dash completed with switches fitted and mounted to the car tomorrow.

So 16 months ago, this is what was delivered onto my driveway in week 2 of September 2021

Time has flown I guess.

So late afternoon yesterday after getting back from shops and various jobs, Sally and I were able to start on looking at, and cleaning the Piggy.

She continues to surprise me, this girl, getting straight in and on with the job of cleaning up. Sally that is.

By the time I came out the house after doing some work stuff that needed to be dealt with, this is what I found.

Sally had unpacked everything of value.

Dubious as it may be, some parts were still useable, even if just as templates.

So things were removed, fibreglass trimmed back to a point where I could restart and add the MX5 parts, but also reduce the amount of useless clutter.

The impending attempt at an MOT with the Rezin Rockit has my crazy hat firmly back in place on my head.

Now we know, 99% of what we dream is just that.

I think those Citroen's are very funky (read that cool), and after what you've done with the Rezin I say go for it. Get the Rezin all dialed how you want it first and then on to your next adventure.

There are ton of photo shopped pics of those Citroen's out there, lots of neat ideas.

Agreed, they are Super Funky, and I want one.

Though the seller of that pile of parts has not replied.

Rezin Rockit is so near, but Covid is kicking my butt.

There is actually another adventure already parked next to the Rockit but will not be exposed till this one is completed.

It is a pretty rare thing, only 3 were brought into England.

Rezin Rockit is being a dick right now…. Had it up to the farm yesterday testing for MOT, and it was spluttering and farting, dying etc. covid means I just brought it home and parked it after adding 20 litres of fresh fuel.

So this afternoon @nickwheeler popped in for a few hours to chat and drop off the RivNut tool so that I can refit the passenger screen wiper.

So I went down to Euro Carparts to fetch a few basic bits after inspecting the airfilter and trying to find just where the oil filter lives.

So a quick photo report of today.

I was not planning on going out as it was damp, 8’C and intermittent drizzle rain.

Covid can be quite unforgiving, but stuck indoors pretty much for 8 days was getting to me.

So I went down, spares in hand.

Got the car up in the air.

Filter put up a bit of a fight, but not as bad as one years ago that ended up skewered with a screwdriver.

Good observation.

I think Euro carparts started as a “Non-American” store.

But who knows, certainly worse for knowledgeable people than O’Reillys.


Headed out, late in the day, to open up and see what the throttle body and air system looks like.

Suggestions have been that it may need a clean up.


Lets see what today brings.

So today was a slow day, lazy, other stuff to do, weather, you know…… excuses. Lots of them.

So I opened the air feed to the throttle body and cleaned it out in position.

A lot more came out on the micro fibre cloth with carb cleaner.

Sunday was a slow day, a few small jobs on this build and some other stuff that needed dealing with and filming for the YouTube Channel.

First job was to replace the one Riv-Nut in the screen holding the wiper motor in place, and then setting the sweep so both are symmetrical in their action.

Few minutes to undo and remove, and refit a fresh one.

Next up was the engine, and to be honest……

After starting it up, it died twice before settling into an even idle at 900rpm

I will call that good for now.

So I drove up and down to the farm a few times, including taking Mickey for a ride. He is like a dog, loves to be part of everything and does like a car.

He gave it the stamp of approval and told me not to go onto the main public road till the car is fully insured (wise words from a drink-driver). I soooo wanted to do a few miles, but the short 1km farm road will have to do as a test for now.

Pleased with the engine settling down I thought it was a good time to wash the car, clean the dusty engine bay and interior.

I have a busy work week ahead, but will try find some time to see if I can get a one day insurance policy, like I did with the Scruffy Micra.

Once insurance is sorted, book an MOT for hopefully next Saturday afternoon, and weather permitting (some snow is forecast) we can try get it through an MOT test.

My fingers will be crossed, but really, everything seems to be working now.

It was possibly dancing around in the back of my head, as daily/hourly insurance can be convenient, but extremely expensive.

I went to my usual first stop, AIB, after “Veygo” by Admiral insurance who did the Micra previously referred me to a hyperlinked email service, which sent three responses, including a human, asking for more information than make, model, registration.

Firstly, Veygo tried via their suppliers, and then responded later in the day to say they could not quote, but did I want to insure anything else with them……. Errrmmm… No.

So……

I called AIB and the agent who took my call has spoken to me before.

He is spectacularly “by the book” in his information gathering.

A longwinded (but thorough) interview and then questions like what excess I expected to pay, what would I think is a good premium etc had me somewhat amused and irritated in equal measure as I was now parked up on a garage forecourt, wanting to fill up the company car at 11.00.

Long story short .

Car valued at £3500.00 (yes it cost a bit more than that in labour and parts to build) excess at £150.00 and limited to 1000 miles per year, or 1600km per year which sounds like very little, but keeping in mind it is a No 3 car behind the company car and Chevy S10 and if I wanted more miles I can call and alter the policy.

So the policy offer with Marker Study insurers was £175.00 per year.

To which my response was a bit rude and abrupt, possibly shocking the agent.

I had mentioned that I had also approached two other insurers and was waiting to hear back from them, but that his quote was way more than the £90.00 to £120.00 people on the forums I frequent were paying. He asked for a moment while he sharpened his pencil, which I agreed to. And ten minutes later the offer was £132.00 per year for the same cover.

This sounded much more in the ball park and I asked him to send details so that I could compare to the offerings from the other companies.

I went to work and felt better about the price.

At around 12.45 while on a meeting with a colleague to try sort out my suicidal work iPad a call came through…… the eager agent again, I answered the call and said I would call him back later.

When I left Woolwich I called him back, but unable to speak with him, I spoke to a colleague who went into the file and told me the young gun had continued to dig around after our first two conversations and managed to somehow get the price reduced to £110.00 per year for the same cover.

I think the fact that this is a summertime , good weather only car, reduces the time on the road and and thus the risk to the insurer.

Lesson for today then…… Sometimes it makes sense to challenge and also be nice in equal measure.

I have booked the MOT test for Saturday afternoon so fingers will be crossed that I/we @nickwheeler had a huge hand in this build have managed to get it all together the way it will make it a fully legal and safe vehicle.

I spoke to the guy at the scrap/steel recyclers and he will charge me £5.00 for a weigh bridge ticket to weigh the car, something I am absolutely fascinated with.

Full tank weight…… I have tried to guess, but really have no clue, but if it comes in at 800kg wet weight, I will be pleased.

I need to call Green Flag who are the recovery agents for the S10 ever since I went to @frankenhealey to collect the lawn tractor and see if they will add the Rezin Rockit for recovery to the policy.


That is probably it for now, unless we have storms and snow on Saturday, in which case…… no game.

Dennis sent a pic of the GMC he was not going to do anything to, just drive it.

Now with completely new paint, it is also getting a new exhaust system.

Looking forward to seeing it if I do go on a USA road trip this year.

Did a few small final jobs tonight after work.

Glued panels in place, including the surround on the instrument cluster..

Plus I made a masking tape sign for the fog light switch.

And finally a small, overdue job…. Got the wiring loom in the cab wrapped and tucked away.

28 August 2020 is when I started this thread.

Nearly 580k views just on Retro Rides, and at one point it was over 1000 views per day.

I am not sure many threads get that sort of viewership or interest. There are a bunch of other forums I contribute to and they all had high viewerships and interest

I would guess the global views are well beyond 800k over 2 years.

This build was a very singleminded vision of something I had wanted to do for a long time……… BUT, so many people from Siberia to Southampton and Auckland to Arkansas Cape Town to Cairo contributed in so many ways.

Materially with parts, specialised tools (just think Void Bush Tool), machining and fabrication, thanks @nickwheeler and a bunch of others.

So today I actually drove the car for the first time, going beyond 3rd gear, which was as much as I dared do out on the farm road.

I drove to the scrapyard where so many bits of steel and scrap has come from over the years for various projects.

Onto the Weigh Bridge.

Me inside (120kg) and about 35-40 litres of petrol.

All four the testers in the centre came to take a look, pointing a few things they liked, out.

One thing that became apparent once the front crossmember was in the air and the wheels and bearing were being inspected was that though within tolerance, the passenger side wheel bearing needed to be tightened or replaced.

Other than that, the comments ranged from awesome, cool build and tidy installation to I wish I could drive this on a track.

High praise indeed.

I will take out road tax next month from the 1st of March as paying a months tax for one days use makes no sense.

I will check out and probably replace the front wheel bearings on both sides.

Also take it for full alignment on a digital machine.

Tonight I am really pleased, thankful and happy for all this community and helpers have helped me,create and achieve.

Checked out the tax online for the car. £295……. That’s a lot of money. If you add £110.00 insurance, £202.00 recovery service and £50.00 MOT test, getting on the road is not cheap.

Still, the more you drive, the cheaper it gets.
