Pulled my old 3/4 out of the back yard, gave it a quick bath and fluid change. It's nice to have it back on the road.

Are you shorting the rear end yourself? I have a 5.3l that just blows the tires off...I would like to see more of this build ! ! !

I am not going to shorten the rear end or narrow the frame. I ordered a set of 15x12 wheel hoops from the EBAY and I am going to have the centers welded in so I can have a custom backspacing and keep the stock width.

The wheels in the picture are going away.

Installed Taylor spark plug wires and looms. Had to cut to length and crimp on connector/boots. Initially it was a PIA to get the wire through the boot, but once I figured out that liquid soap and a pair of hemostats were the ticket they went together easily.

i took pics of the rear end i found to see what it came off of. so far ive had zero luck identifying it, the casting number doesnt make sense and the stamp on the passenger side axle tube doesnt decode from any site ive been able to find. it starts with THS which isnt anywhere on any site. i also found 4 wheels and hub caps from a 2000ish astro van for it. i guess ill have to pull the cover tonight and see what is inside. may as well change fluids while im in there.

Finished replacing my upper and lower ball joints. She's riding nice and level now that the passenger spring is seated properly and the driver's side is now right side up (put it in upside down after spraying brake cleaner in my eye)

I picked up my renewed gas tank today and I must say, it does look impressive. I still think I'll go on and order a new one, just to be sure.

I also called around and found a service center that will turn my drums for $15.00 each.

Re : Brake Drum Service

I took Bendix Factory brake service training (they're the folks who designed your brakes) and they were adamant that Mechanics NOT automatically turn the brake drums because each time you do this , you remove metal that's important to have so your brakes dissipate heat properly and don't fade just when you need them the most ~

They said the only time you should turn / machine brake drums is when they're so out of round they cause brake pedal pulsations or if they're bell mouthed over .020" .

When asked what about when the shoes went metal to metal , he said usually this means the drum is way past spec so it's junk anyways , if you *must* re - use it , use some really coarse sand paper etc. to remove the sharp edges in the grooves then mount it up , the new shoes will bed in to the grooves and actually make the brakes work better .

I trust the Engineers who designed the brakes more than the old guy who tried to teach me to turn the drums every time , in the end this only sells more drums and puts dangerously thin drums back on the street .

Well thanks man! That's why I joined this site, to get info I couldn't get elsewhere for the same price.

I'll hold off on the drum turning....

I did get one coat of red primer on my "renewed" gas tank. I hope to finish it tomorrow depending on the weather.

I plan to paint the tank "hammered" silver as that might look about what it did before I had it cleaned up and I'll paint the nozzle black.

Wait ~ if you took it to the " Gas Tank Renew " franchise dealer , they're supposed to paint it inside and out , all you needs do is choose the silver / grey color you like and it's good to go pretty much forever as that's the guarantee :
LIFETIME .

Be aware that all new tanks are Chinese carp ,most either leak at the poorly welded seams now or will in less than one year , I highly suggest the Gas Tank Re New solution , more $ yes but it's right .

To - day I tossed some empty deposit bottles into my '69 C/10 Stepper as I walked past it , then I purchased a $600 Motocycle 100 + miles away so I guess I'll be Desert bound next week to collect that .

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Hmm.....well then....maybe I should save another $150.00 and just use my old tank then!

The guy offered to coat the outside with black material, undercoating was what it was, as "most gas tanks we fix are mounted under the frame" but I opted out since I wanted to keep the original look and I was fearful they'd get some down into the lock ring area.

He warranted the work for two years and did say the "renew" material has a lifetime warranty.

OK man...I do value opinions here....but I'd been told both ways on this one: one party thinks I should get a new tank and others think I did the right thing getting this one fixed.

Looks like a million dollars. I bought the same loom this week.

Where abouts on the Space Coast? I used to live in Palm Bay.

I put new rear brakes, including new Bendix drums, on my truck. I've replaced pads on lots of disc brakes, but this was the first time I've ever done shoes.

Re : What did you do to your truck today!

As I said : new tanks are made in China by pi$$ed off slave laborers on work camps , from basically tin foil .

You're wanting to put 18 gallons of gasoline behind your seat in tin foil ?! .

The choice is yours .

FWIW , the black stuff re new uses , isn't really undercoating , it's just thick to resist stone chipping .

You can always $pend the $150. later or , get a good used tank from one of the many who Hot Rod their rigs & re locate perfectly good gas tanks under the bed etc. , usually amazingly cheaply .

For reasons I'll never understand , used gas tanks are *very* hard to sell ~ I tried to GIVE AWAY my spare '49 ~ '53 Chevy truck gas tank for over 20 years before giving it to my local scrap guy .

I'm sure you'll be well pleased with the re new'd one .

A couple weeks ago, at the street fair in town, there was a vendor that makes signs out of license plates. I ordered one to go with my truck, then I picked it up today at the street fair in Concrete, WA.

somewhere on here, i read about using 0000 steel wool for cleaning windows. today i tried it out and found that it worked great. now that the windows are clean, i was able to start tinting. got the rear and the vent windows done before running out of light and had to get more tint

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Never heard that about steel wool, better than the chemicals I use, have to keep it in mind for future use.:c2:
