As part of keeping with my rusty on top and finished on the bottom side. I deiced to work on the running boards. These are original running boards and in incredible shape. At first I planned to sandblast the bottom side before painting with rust guard paint followed by coating it all in raptor liner like the rest. After seeing it was just surface scale I decided to wire wheel most of it and spot sandblast the brackets and hard to reach areas.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Wow, those running boards are mint! I had to replace all the hat channel supports and mounting locations on mine.

Pretty productive weekend. I got the last of the sheet metal coated on the backside with Raptor liner. I added it to the front fenders, the front splash pan and the running boards. Only the backside of the hood it next.
My friend Josh that is a fabricator at my friends hotrod shop came over Sunday to lend a hand. He as been helping me fab an exhaust system out of 2.5" SS with Hooker Blackheart mufflers. We also set my pinon angle to verify clearances of the drive shaft to the exhaust. He has just about got the more difficult part handled. He fits onsite and welds at the shop....Comes back and repeats the process. Once the exhaust is done I will drop the body back on... I will get some pics of the Raptor Lined body parts. Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Wow! That's nice.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
nice fab! he sets up at your place and constructs at his place, sounds like that is inexpensive haha what price glory though?

Marc, Did you have any clearance issues with the master cylinder now that you have your transmission and exhaust in? I'm looking at the CPP kit which is similar physical size to the one you got. How far does the lowest point of the booster/master extend below the frame rail or inward? If you can help me with those two measurements I can figure out if it will work with my set up. I really want to avoid a master on the firewall. Btw, Your burb is looking awesome. |

A few pis of the fenders and running boards that I coated. I matte cleared the front fenders so all that is left is the hood, doors and Body. The last pic was just to get an idea of how it will look laid out.

A little more progress on the exhaust. Next up installing o2 bungs and finish welding. We (Josh) have most of the heavy lifting done. The rest will be pretty straight forward. I ordered up a few more SS isolators. I'm digging the placement of the mounts. I will snap some pics once in place. I also worked on finalizing my driveline angles with the help of Nate from Porterbuilt. I used Delrin for my trans
and carrier bearing spacers which is a dense very hard plastic. Its easy to drill and lighter than a hunk of metal. I have been focusing on a bunch of little stuff like painting up the driver shaft. Just stuff that is needed prior to the body going on. My friend/coworker Vic stopped by to check out my project. Vic has about 9-10 cars and trucks. All varying conditions/styles. He drove his (real) patina 55 BBW truck... Thanks Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Nice work on the exhaust, it's looking great. Love those BBC trucks too.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
That looks great. One question though. Your master cylinder looks to be very close to your exhaust. Are you concerned about heat soaking the master cylinder?

I received a small Summit order today. One item I purchased was an Optima battery. I got it installed this evening. I purchased a nice 0 gauge battery cable kit from American Autowire. The batter box was purchased off eBay. Pretty happy.
Disclaimer....I realize my body it still not mounted. I'm trying to get as much done prior to the body going on while I wait on the exhaust. Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Looking good! I've been running Optima's for years, but I've been having trouble with their batteries having bad cells lately. Some folks on the web are saying it's because they moved manufacturing to Mexico, but I haven't researched it enough to know if that's true or not.

Well I worked on finishing the outsides of the doors. I can say I think I'm starting to get the hand of it. The doors are done ans sealed with matte clear. Because I liked how the doors turned out I think I'm going to further sand Parts of the body to achieve a similar result. i have enjoyed getting the hang of using an airbrush again....The outside of the body is all that is left.
On to the pics|||||||||| Marc |

Don't get it twisted, it might look rusty on the outside but here is an example of the satin painted backside of one of the doors. I really like the interior contrast with that of the weathered exterior.
Thank you Marc |

Impressive work!! I meant to ask, what kind of undercoating did you use on your fenders and running boards? Thanks in advance.
