In it’s short life here in the Netherlands, the truck already had such different loads to carry.
From garden furniture when there wasn’t even a floor in the bed, to different motorcycles, engines, matrasses, bicycles, wheels and tires...and lots of trash:lol:
Last Saturday, my niece asked if I could help her with getting a chair from Amsterdam.
Sure, why not
So I got up early, picked up my niece and went to central Amsterdam.

Loaded the beautysalon chair, and went home. Boy, did we get some attention in Amsterdam :lol: As if they haven’t seen an old truck in their entire life

It’s good to be on the road...

Thanks Mark, Jim!
Jim, you wont recognize the city nowadays, it changes while you stand in it...

Let me show you some pics of the brakes and suspension of the ‘35...
I will not talk sh*t about the “Professianal Hot Rod Shop”. I know the Dutch readers will know this guy..
This is only the beginning to get this right. This is the first thing I looked at, very promessing for the rest to come.

Pic #1 brakeline, it’s copper, so it has to have clamps, especially in this kind of area...
Pic #2,3 he had ordered the wrong size brakeshoes. If you do your homework, you’ll know that 2” brakes does not fit stock ‘35 drums. I did find this info after 3 minutes on Google. You can see the drum scrape the shoe, also you can’t get the hub/drum tightened up, it won’t turn anymore. 1 3/4” shoes should have been used...
Pic #4 crownnuts, I was thought the pins have to be in the crown, otherwise the nuts can come loose and and that is a bad thing when you talk suspension. I only had to make 1/4” thick rings to get the nuts where they belong, then used the proper size pins and it was ready to Roll. That isn’t so difficult?
Pic #5 didn’t get the drums off, so made me a special 1935 brakedrumpuller...
When you don’t have it, and you need it, make it:metal:

Apparently the lack of good workmanship and getting good help is a world wide problem. Lucky the 35 is in good hands now!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Maybe you’re right Doug.
You don’t want to know how much money went to this shop, it’s a shame....

I try to do it with what I have and I try to do it properly. Only thing is I don’t have any experience with these cars.
It should be a lot of fun though!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

It's crazy how some people think these things are safe to do!

I am having issues with my latest project. The previous owner had stuff towels into the main body/frame support and packed body filler in it to cover the rot.

Hopefully this will get a bit better for you.

Mark

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes Mark, I think it’s laziness or indolence from some people.or they have no idea what they are doing.

The front brakes are the same as the rear. And the good man has overhauled the rear axle and the short block. Lets hope he did that the right way.
The rest is bolt off and bolt on our way.
We’ll see.
I will post some pictures along the way if you guys are interested.

Interested! Even though it isn’t a truck, problem solving and good workmanship is applicable anywhere.

Kees, first off don't mean to hijack your thread!

This is some shots of what people do that are unacceptable!
The Rover I'm working on yesterday, I had to use a BFH and a chisel to remove the master cylinder. Upon doing so this is what I found!
No wonder it didn't have brakes.
And btw this jerk new something was wrong because he painted all around the master. The master is frozen up.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

You don’t hijack Mark.
Some things have to be shown, especially if this comes from the so called Professional shops.
I am a hobby builder, but I have an eye for safety.
As the saying goes, measure twice, cut once...this goes for all things in a car or motorcycle build.
I also read the thread Bam55 did on the redo of a frontclip, you can’t imaging how some people find this is save...their playing with not only their own life, but of bystanders aswell.
All I can say is, happy building, but do it save!!

Thanks for showing Mark!!

Yes, safety first! Was this the same vehicle you mentioned had newspapers stuffed in rust holes with bondo and paint over? Did a pro shop do this?

One of my pet peeves is shoddy work, especially intentionally shoddy, as it gives all of us a bad rep. Has probably been going on since the first wheeled vehicle was brought in for service.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes, Same vehicle.
I think it was a private owner that just covered everything in POR paint to "hide his crimes" and called refurbished! He knew ALL of the issues and sold it this way! Shame!!!

Ok guys,
I need some advice on the brakes of the ‘35 Ford.
He is willing to help me with that via pm??
Thanks!

Oh and I’m in the running for a ‘57 Chevy 210 Wagon again...

Advanced Design 01-16-2019 10:00 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Kees, I know zero about brakes on a 35 Ford though I am sure someone here will step up.

Good luck on the wagon!

RockinKees 01-17-2019 05:18 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thnx Doug!
The brakes aren’t really the problem, it’s more about the difference between the year of make in the spindles...late ‘35 to ‘36-‘37....
We sorted the rear brakes out already.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

New to this forum, and just finished reading a couple of builds.
Kees I love your stick-to-itiveness, especially with your header issues. I would have probably given up after header #3 and put the problem on a shop to figure out, so I salute you.
I also love that you and your son are involved in this car culture thing that we love. I read somewhere that only half the kids nowadays bother to get their license before age 18… it’s not about Ford vs. Chevy, its which smart phone, Apple or Android.
Anyway, great work, and stay healthy… John from CA.

RockinKees 01-19-2019 12:50 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thank you John for your kind words and taking time to read my little overseas build!

Taking things to a shop to solve problems is not my thing, always do it my way.
Sometimes that is a bad thing

Your right about the kids these days, I guess I’m lucky!
It took him a few years to get really interested in the hobby, but now he goes with me whenever he has time :metal:
Yesterday we went to see a ‘57 Chevy Wagon together, a roundtrip of 300 miles, good times!!
The Chevy didn’t fell through tho...
The rivalty between Ford and Chevy, Well I never understood that anyway, we are in the same hobby, right?
And Thanks about staying healthy....probably not gonna happen, but I’ll do my best! :metal:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yeah, I'm lucky as well, both my son and stepson own older cars. Recently I was looking for a tri-5 2door wagon and/or either a 53 to 56 Ford Stepside or a 55 to 59 Chevy truck and wound up (3weeks ago) with a 55 Chevy Stepside. I've owned over 40 cars in my life and if I see something older and still on the road no matter what make or model I'm grinning ear to ear.
It's cool that you have meets with older American cars there in Holland. Years ago I was in Amsterdam and saw a "Rockford Files" style Pontiac Firebird with a big crowd of people around it, which was cool.

RockinKees 01-20-2019 05:47 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yeah, we get lots of attention with our old cars.
But I think, or am sure, that the car culture we have here, is nothing compared with the carculture in the USA.
Always nice to meet likeminded people!

Projects going Well Mark.
Been drawing electrical diagrams for the 35 Ford. It’s getting modern electronics inside :metal:
Better safe than sorry...

We had the first snow today, on my way to the Hot Rod Shed:lol:
Almost winter :metal:

Pic 1, on my way to the shed
Pic 2 modern electronics in the making....
Pic 3 on my way home.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Are those bicycle lanes to the left and the right?

Good start on the electrical! And I hope we don’t get any more snow here...Saturday was enough!

RockinKees 01-23-2019 05:40 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yes, those are bicycle lanes. This is in the “polder”, don’t no how you you call this, land that is being made out of water/lakes.
It is a 35 mph zone, we have lots of them in the country.
You are very right about the snow, the temperature can rise now....

Electrics are going Well. I use so many relays because we wanted to use the original switches. They are intended for 6Volts, now we use the switches to control the relays, at 12 Volts. All new wiring goes in as well, homemade. Did this before and works great!
Have to wire for a few days at my speed, but it comes along.

For the brakes, there is a difference in spindles from 1935 and 1936/37, so with upgrades brakes we have to use newer spindles as well.
Rear we must use new hubs and drums (brakeshoes were ordered wrong by that shop,so we can’t use the original drums anymore), for the front we are in doubt for drums or discs. I lean towards discs...but it not my car unfortunatly.

I have just read this build from the start (only just joined the Forum).

What can I say? Well done on your build, a real inspiration. love the photos and your honesty during the build. Such craftsmanship and ingenuity and problem solving.

Thank you for sharing your build, it was a very interesting read and has given me confidence and inspiration to complete work on my '57.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

No update today, it comes in the near future, on the ‘35...

I have a question for the members living in the Los Angeles or Las Vegas area.
We, my son and I are in LA from April 10 until April 13. We stay three days
in Culver City for the night. Try to see a lot of things Santa Monica, Malibu Beverly Hills, all we can do :metal:
April 13/14 we are in Pomona and visit the Pomona Swapmeet, and after that we’re of to Vegas until April 22.
On April 25 we fly back to Holland, from Los Angeles again.
Is there a member who can help me out?
I want to buy a camshaft kit from Lunati.
They sell it at Jegs and Summit, and ofcourse at Lunati.
But they all have no shop in the area we are at. I have emailed the SoCal Speedshops in LA and in Vegas, but no answer yet.
Some said to sent it to the motel or hotel where we stay, but I don’t know if that is a good idea...
Maybe if there is some one living in that area who is willing to help me out, please send me a PM and we can try to work something out?
Or any other tips are very welcome too!

Thanks!

RockinKees 02-22-2019 05:45 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Ok guys, problem probably solved.
I did get an email from SoCal LA last night, after two and a half weeks :metal:
So if the price is not too much different from Lunati, I pick it up there.

If not, well, you’ll hear me again :lol:

Thanks!

If he has a friendships discount that’s worth taking a D-Tour...;)
Riverside was not on our route, but who knows?

Thank you Steve!!
Unfortunaly it did not work out, if it was more on my route, I sure did get it there.
Thank you for asking him and spending your time on me!!
Appreciate it!!

So if anybody lives in LA, Santa Monica, Culver City, Pomona or in that area, or in Las Vegas and want to help....?
I only pick it up, I won't stay ;)

(I will also make sure you get the parts I need, I order them :metal: )

No worries Kees! maybe open a separate thread in the "general discussion" section asking for a forum member in LA?
or do an advanced search in the member list, there you can select location and send PM's to them.
