Got back from my trip this evening and had time to bolt in the radiatior, front filler panels and hood latch. All is looking good. As you can see I haven't bothered to get rid of the lightbulb mounted on the hood. I've actually been using it to work at night

Re: Nik's 62 build
Nice job man! I had the day off school for spring break and spent a good portion of the day working sanding the interior firewall and floor of the 66's cab. Tomorrow(saturday) morning I should be priming and painting. Have to be somewhere around noon so not sure on the paint....but primer none the less! :bann:

Re: Nik's 62 build
Looks good !! :metal:
The light-bulb is CHARACTER! |

I decided to try to make the power steering high pressure hose instead of trying to find one with the correct fittings. The metal part of the line had a 90 degree bend in it and was far too long, so I straightened it out and cut it to the correct length. |

I then made a nice Double inverted flare on the end and put the correct bend in the line. Here it is installed.

Today was the last day of my springs break, so I decided to get a few things done. First I cleaned all the grease and crap off of the oil filter canister and metal lines and painted them black. I wanted to leave the original sticker so I taped it off to preserve it while painting. Here is the finished product.

The top was aluminum so I just left it raw and polished it.

I wanted to do something a little more fun so I decided to install the gun rack I picked up a while back. Here is my 1970 slavia 620 testing it out.

Nice!! Yeah, today is my last day of Spring break to. :waah:

Today's project was to get the proportioning block mounted. I chose to mount it to the frame rail area below the brake booster. I welded two bolts on to the frame. |

Not a great pic but here it is with the nuts tightened down. All I need to do is bend and flare 3 short pieces of brake line and the brake system will be complete other than calipers and rubber brake hoses.

Also made the clutch pedal stops. One for setting the return height, and one for preventing the master cylinder from bottoming out. They are both adjustable in both directions.

Here is the clutch pedal set to the same height as the brake pedal.

Re: Nik's 62 build
Nice job on the power steering lines! Sure is nice when you can make the stuff you already have work.

Got a little time today to mount those hooks I got from the blue 61 one ton cab, I mounted them in the same location they were on the 61, not sure if they're gm or not, but they're certainly era correct.

Also made some more progress on my dads burb, since we could not find a suburban door he bought these pickup doors a while back and I already repaired the lower rust. As you can see the window frame is a completely different shape, the burb is square and the pickup is rounded.

Since the old rusted out suburban doors still had good window frames and glass I cut the window frames off and removed the glass. The suburban frames were welded into the pickup door, quite simple actually. My uncle (an ex bodyman) assisted with fitting the glass and lining everything up so the door gaps are equal everywhere.

Re: Nik's 62 build
Nice work on those doors!

Real nice work Nick.It has been a while since I seen someone convert a truck door to a burb door (or vice versa).

Today I went to go treasure hunting at my favourite little junkyard again and found this 64-66 swb stepside laying way in the back on a mountain of old rims. The cab was actually completely rust free, but unfortunately the roof was screwed up terribly. I grabbed a few parts from it. |

The main thing I got from it was this set of west coast style mirrors. They were in pretty good shape but just filthy.

The backsides, the arms will still need to be stripped and painted white.

Mirrors look nice! I wish there were junkyards that still had old trucks here.

Re: Nik's 62 build
Nick, I love the way you just quietly get on with stuff.
Changing the rounded door frames to square is really genius, and you guys did well there. West coast mirrors, I love them. Not right for my trucks style, but they always look great. Glad you found a good set, for presumably sensible money. |
Re: Nik's 62 build
Nice find on the mirrors man. I'm gonna be keeping mine for when my 66 is done. :chevy:

I've been busy and the weather has been bad for the past week or so and I haven't got much done. But today was the first day of a four day long weekend so I got to work on the panhard bar. I decided to use the stock 60-62 panhard bar and bracket, so I cut the bracket off of the old rear end. I bolted one end of the panhard bar to the frame and made sure the rear end was centred under the frame. I then tack welded the bracket to the rear end and checked to make sure it was all good.

Once confirmed it was in the correct spot I welded it on solid. It still needs painting just as the rear end cover does as well.

Re: Nik's 62 build
Way to go on all counts of your truck build.
The attention to detail and the over all way you have crafted your mods. is very inspiring to me. I'm just plodding along trying to figure out how to do some of what you have done. The power steering sector to frame mod. is too cool. I had wondered about doing something similar and notching the frame to allow the sector to mount like on the late model frame. I had also thought about cutting the frame where the sector mounts on my donor truck and wielding that section into the 62 frame. The way you built your on power brake and clutch master cylinder mount is really impressive as is all your work on your truck and your dad's. I had a very rough time getting the control arm bushings off of my donor control arms too. Congrats. on your progress and on a very nice truck. Also this is one of the best build threads on the forum. Thanks too for your kind words on my thread. |

Today I spent some time on brake lines, I cut one piece that goes from the proportioning block to the front drivers brake hose. I made double inverted flares on both sides. |
