Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Stood in line at the DMV for 1.5 hours with the idea I could put an original 1964 Arizona license plate on my truck instead of the silk screen style of the modern plate.

Got to the lady at the counter and she said" that plate is too old, you can't use it"

Normally I would have ripped her head off right on the spot, but I said in a very calm voice that I thought she was mistaken and maybe she should ask someone else.

She looks over at the lady sitting next to her and was told...."yeah, I think it's too old so NO he can't register that plate.

Now I am not a patient man and my frustration was starting to show but instead I told them that I was positive that they were wrong and that I would just go home and do the registration on-line.

I searched for what I needed on the computer, filled out their form, downloaded the instructions and the fee schedule and had to drive back to the DMV. I explained to the receptionist that I had been there that morning and already waited an hour and a half only to receive the wrong information and that I was not willing to wait again.....

To my surprise she took me directly to another clerk who had to call a different clerk because she had never done an antique plate before. Every time she got to a new question on the form she had to call. I asked her if it wouldn't be easier to have the person she was calling just do it and that way I wouldn't spend another 1.5 hours while she figured out how to do this.......good idea, she said.

Anyway, it got taken care of and for the next 5 years I have an original '64 Arizona plate. Just cost me $135.00 in fees and the $2.00 I paid for the plate at a yardsale.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Here in California I have the same problem. I ended up purchasing the California Vehicle Code book. It's a thick book, walked in the DMV with it knowing full well I was going to get the runaround they still didn't want to do it until I told the gal that I wanted it in writing from her that she wouldn't do it or get me a supervisor because I wasn't leaving. The supervisor didn't want to do anything for me either until I told her then put it in writing cause I'm not leaving. I got it straightened out but I was still in there for over an hour.

I put tranny fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant in the truck today and started it for the first time in over 6 years. The 89 BB had the lobe for a machanical fuel pump ( I put a q jet on it) and it works just fine. Oh did I mention I put fuel in it also.. It purrs and on the first try.. Had a few tranny leaks. I forgot to tighten the cooler lines and I dont have a gear in for the speedo cable.. OOPS... Bone Yard here I come. It is a 700R4 tranny from my 4x4. I put an output shaft in it. I had a big :D on my face for the first time in a long time. Now I just need to get it buttoned up so I can drive it.

Got sick and tired of the POS aftermarket replacement turn signal not quite working right, so I took it apart, figured out how it works and modified it. Now it does what it's suppose to.

If you hear the signal but the dash light isn't flashing unless you push the turn signal up or down, this might be your fix. Test it out before putting the steering wheel back on, it takes some tweaking to get it just right.

[QUOTE=lasher78;6171685]what did you get the gearbox, pitman arm, pump and lines out of to use?

Gearbox and pitman arm came from a 78. The motor in my truck is out of a 72 nova so the pump and brackets came from the same car. I bought a pressure line for a 72 c-10 with the same 250 motor. The fit wasn't perfect but it works. The adapter plate and rag joint coupler came from captain fab on this site. Couldn't have gone smoother.

Started the process of wiring the dash cluster. Still need to send off the Tachometer to have it modernized, you no longer need a transmitter unit with the upgrade. The only change I would make now is that I would not order the gages with the Dolphin, they did not make them that way 5 years back however.

I tested the clock and will prob. have it upgraded as well. There service cleans and polishes the bezel and make the movements quartz.

After a very long year I finally put some paint on this thing. Turned out very well, I'm pretty happy with it.

Finished the install of the filler neck on my 64 stepper. I am very pleased with it. Photos will have to wait. My wife has the camera and she is with our daughter waiting on the last few days of her pregnancy.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Well, work and training has kept me quite busy this week, so I did not update some of the trucks progress.

McMurphy up in North Pole sent me some parts to get started at fitting power steering to the truck THANK YOU !!

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psed090bc4.jpg

On Friday afternoon, Mickey came around bearing a stupid grin and shouting "That blooody truck of yours..... Here's something for it."

And proudly handed over the parts that must have been brought over by Super Man, with the speed of delivery.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps00fe5158.jpg

Until I have all the parts together for the PS conversion I will just stash them in the trucks cabinet in the garage.

I have also bought this boat tank to convert into a slightly different, pinstriped Jerry can for the truck, when we do long distances with the teardrop, as I have no idea what the fuel consumption may do.

Clearly it will not be a Suzuki tank once done.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps26588e0f.jpg

After various tasks today, by about 4pm I got started on the Steel trunk I am bolting into the rear of the truck to keep the jack, some tools and anything else "valuable"

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3533140b.jpg

Firstly I hand sanded the trunk, then in a fit of genius popped into the woodwork shed and got this little beauty out (found it at the tip years ago)

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5c979f29.jpg

Photographed the latches as well, as it seems there may be somebodies military force number on the side latches. If anyone knows how to research the numbers, please do and fee back on here.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3207571a.jpg

POSSIBLE LEAD AS TO ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd65f5dc0.jpg

Once sanded back, I cleaned it three times with fresh cloths and thinners.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps47f2f90e.jpg

Then laid out the letters to get an idea of what size I will need for the name I want to add. Just in case you are trying to decipher, it will be 1966 in the bottom line, I just did not have another 6 stencil.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4c663f11.jpg

Masked it all off.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf7ef1941.jpg

The process I am following is being made up as I go along, so never done it before, but logic says it should work.... to create a look of Fake Patina I am layering paint and colours randomly. I will leave this to dry and harden for the week, and then sand it back a lot by hand with water paper, untill it looks right. Then I will use the stencils one letter at a time and either spray or use a bit of foam to dab the paint over the letters, then do a very fine flatting again, after which I will coat the whole thing is Clear lacquer.

Couple of thick coats of primer to use as base.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps50d96d32.jpg

Then a load of random colours, interdispersed with gold.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps50d96d32.jpg

Finally a coat of Gold, overlaid with the lovely lurid green you can see.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse79fbd5a.jpg

Unmasked and put away, I was so tempted to stencil today as well.

Hopefully will get around to the grease gun next weekend.
