Thanks Din, much appreciated.

As this is from the tip, recycling tip that is, but it did cost me six pairs of rubberised gloves and a fiver for the wheelbarrow load of stuff excluding the Jerry can, which was going to be turned into a small booze cabinet. But I tossed it back.

I went to my friendly local tip this morning to see if I could buy a Cole of 2 ton pallet trucks to sell on at a bit of a profit....... Ooooooopsss, the guy who makes the decisions was not there.

So I managed to spend two hours chatting to the guys in the yard and collect some bits I thought were worth having.

In fact a wheelbarrow load of ****e.

In the end, I left the Jerry can that was going to be a mini bar, behind.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psj8lxtqee.jpg

Came home and sorted it all out

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psabkdsc20.jpg

The wood clamps will be handy when I make up the bed wood strips, joining two, strips at a time.

The electrical, fuse boxes are part of a future project that Nicola will hopefully like.

The little bottle jack up front will be incorporated into a small bearing press I want to build from bits I have around.

After cleaning, one German made 5 liters pump up pressure sprayer that will work for applying Gunk Degreaser under the cab and chassis as well as Roundup weed killer to the driveway.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psi9pegat8.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstp6brabe.jpg

Something a bit retro.... Gas heater. May well be for sale.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psudwf9iu6.jpg

In my job lot of trash there was a 750 watt, 3000rpm bench grinder, Made in Holland.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqnldyspi.jpg

It is to be an ally and stainless steel polisher....... I am going to look for 15 mm inner diameter spindles for it to get the total width down

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psbyduaav6.jpg

In the pile of bits you may have noticed two, chainsaw motors too......l

They have little 35cc Pistons. Which are time consuming to remove, but possibly worth the time.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnbpoujru.jpg

Perfect for a key ring for the garage keys, in case they go missing.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmtqi4grc.jpg

Lastly, Nicola went to see her dad this afternoon, he lives only 3 miles from us, so we pop in regularly, and he often pops in for a cuppa tea and to release Ruby, his retired Greyhound who loves to stretch her legs in the back yard.

Today he had bought me a very cool high end metal poster for my garage.

I love it.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseaybwilr.jpg

So that is the lot for today.

Tomorrow it is Bootfair, but I suspect it will be rained out.

So time to get up close and personal with the truck, to use the new pressure sprayer.

That poster is hilarious :haha: The mini piston and connecting rod are cool too. I'll have to think of a way to use one on my project.

Thanks guys, they take way too much time to get out as modern stuff is built not to be maintained.

Still, great little conversation piece.

The second one was better, but I nicked the Conroe twice with the grinder as its crank case was a sealed unit.

Well, both Bootfairs were a bust, they were on, but all I managed to get was one small vintage Butlins holiday camp peanut plate for Nicola @£1.50 which is more than double what I would normally pay, but she grew up with the Butlins holiday camps and will be going there next weekend with a group of her school mates.

Carburettors from the chainsaws added in pic.

Plate is smaller than a Victorian saucer.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstu0r01lt.jpg

I am often appalled at what gets tossed, so much new stuff.
Yesterday there was a load of heavy duty Dexian shelving and framework, all obviously new......

Still, I will continue to exploit other people's stupidity and glut, to feed my own habits. Every time I get something free, and can pass it on, or use it myself, it releases money to go into my mortgage. Easy.

I did buy some 16mm spindles for the bench polisher on EBay last night.

So hopefully those will be here this week too.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Bootfair sucked big time today.

So came home and completed a load of small tasks that should have been done a long time ago.

Including the redesign and repair of the relocated battery carrier.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuddpplmo.jpg

Also sleeved the threaded bar.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pss37ti2fz.jpg

Happy with the result.

Earlier today I made a two faced robot from the bits of left over chainsaw as well.

His name is Bazateer or Reetazab depending on which one you speak to.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psna05ndyv.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmx0126yx.jpg

I also had mate Gene pop over for a few hours for coffee and a chat, and to collect the small hobby lathe I Freecycled on a truck forum.

Gene is a popper traditional hand written Sign Writer. And I for one love his work.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Rain and more rain.

Perfect for a public holiday Monday when there are so many shows etc planned.

I was going to find some procrastination project to do, then realised the inner fenders will never clean themselves.

So armed with about 3 liters of petrol a couple of soft and hard brushes and a putty knife, I started on the greaser, dirtiest one of the two. Sat outside in the rain, I got thoroughly soaked, but the first one followed by the second one which was not as oily, got done, then I washed them both with the hard brush and about 3/4 bottle of Cif/Hany Andy ammonia based kitchen cleaner to get the oily grease off, washed and rinsed with buckets of water from my perpetually refilling water butt, I was eventually happy.

Both sides are now ready for paint prep, primer coat followed by Satin Black Two Pack paint.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps7eugziyu.jpg

Yesterday I started to reassemble to cleaned, painted and MX5/Miata Motorwd heater unit, only to realise all the screws, 32 of them, were dirty and not very good looking, so steel brush, poked through some cereal box cardboard and both the heads and threads satin blacked as well.

So today after the inner fenders I finished reassembly of this unit and packed it away.

The lid is away with Ian Brown for some special under hood treatment.

The red you can see is a high density foam gasket I made to seal the fan to the metal case.

A while ago I agreed to put some stripes on the "blower box" lid for Rian's truck. Now before you read on I have to point out that I'm no expert pin-striper, but it is something I enjoy doing but I'm along way off the standard of the pros we all marvel at.

I collected the lid when we were all at the Supernats early August. Rian had blasted and painted it for me, unfortunately the primer Rian had used had reacted a little so rather than take any chances I stripped it back to bare metal, then etch-primed it followed by a good old coat of 2K black.

Attachment 1442702

Attachment 1442703

I asked Rian if he had anything in mind design wise and he said could I do a growling grizzly bear? I made a stencil and this was also put on in 2K as you can flat it right out and polish it smooth

Attachment 1442708

Attachment 1442709

Next I marked out the outside border for the design, with it being under the hood I wanted a heavy (ish) line so it would be visible from a distance

I used an Excalibur 00 and 1 shot (what else?). I always pallet up on an old catalogue as the paper is ideal for loading your brush and you can just tear off the page for the next clean sheet. (It also has the added advantage of becoming quite interesting when you get the underwear section ).

Attachment 1442711

White first

Attachment 1442712

Attachment 1442713

Then red

Attachment 1442714

Attachment 1442715

It's not perfect, none of my stuff ever is, but as Rian said it's better than rattle can black and a couple of stickers.

Agreed Johnny.

Guys, I am certain we all feel the same way in this community.

I feel blessed and privileged that Ian agreed to do the striping and whenI said Angry Bear, I did not expect him to go this far.

So I have a good reason to open the hood at every opportunity when the truck is completed.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

I do love the roads in the UK........ Did 162 miles in 6 hrs yesterday.

Huge delays everywhere.

However, sometimes weird stuff happens for good reasons.

Had I been to see the customers I had planned at the time I had planned and not got delayed, I would have been in Romford, an hour from home by 3pm.

However, I found myself waiting for a customer at 3.30pm about 2 hrs from home.

When I came out from seeing the customer at 4pm, there was a message on my mobile to say my front end rebuild kit for the truck had arrived in Watford from New York where it got shipped from. I checked with Steve Lang to see where he was, and by a stroke of luck he was about 6 miles up the road on my way out to the M25 motorway and seeing as the motorways would be swamped with afternoon traffic and my local motorway the M2 was in a bad way, I decided. To go pick up the parts.

Langey's Hotrod Shop as he is known, will import parts on your behalf at direct - $ for £ - exchange rate. This allows him some profit, covers the import duties and VAT etc and gets done pretty pronto. The alternative is EBay or local shops at pretty much the same price.

Meeting Steve to collect my parts, we ended up talking cars, engines and life in general for nearly an hour....time flies like that.

He was working on his Willys Gasser Pickup, fine tuning the door figment.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8cdq0t8o.jpg

This was what had cost me £260.00 landed, in my hands for the truck.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5yva59zm.jpg

Photo stolen off the sellers Ebay description.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2oyelg6x.jpg

I was absolutely shattered last night and did not even unpack, inspect or gloat about the kit, or the latest painful hiding I had bought myself.

Next job will be attempting to undo all the existing parts without destroying my knuckles or and threads, and fitting the we parts successfully.

I feel much pain coming my way, but it's the only way to do this truck so that I can enjoy it in the long term.

I have yet to look at them, tired getting home every night.
Got home tonight and found this had arrived in the post.

A plate from George in Manilla.

Take a look at his great thread : Letter from Manilla it makes for great reading.

In other news, another surprise parcel arrived from Ian Brown today.

I already reported on this cover, but have to say, in hand, it is even more impressive.

I am seriously pleased and impressed with it. It is so difficult to capture the texture and look of this piece in a photo.

Grizz1963 09-12-2015 06:00 PM

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Another day that proved to end very differently to the way I would have planned it to......

As this build has unfolded, I have found more and more damage, bodges and general wear and tear that needed to be addressed.
A lot of it was and is safety paramount, things like brakes, suspension etc.

I decided to replace all the front ball joints, steering parts etc with completely new parts some time ago, so ordered a rebuild kit as advised by Ian Brown who had used one for his Tennessee Honey truck.

So today I managed to persuade (asked nicely) mate Martin to come over and help, and supervise the replacement process. Thinking we would be done before dark.

Yeeeeaaahhhhh Riiiiighht.

Started by disassembling the Wishbones, suspension and steering.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psawq7fuxl.jpg

The sort of chaos that gives me a massive headache.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psx9uzsitd.jpg

Drivers side hub and ball joints were a problem when I lowered the front end, after a load of bashing, it still did not relinquish its hold.

Ended up cutting the two bolts' heads off to get the nuts off. They were replaced by parts from the hub Ian had given me.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssl1winft.jpg

Also decided to buy a full front bearing replacement kit while at LMC or similar. As the bearings are an unknown, and could be as old as the truck @ 50 years.

Drivers side wishbone or A-Arm was obviously in a hard impact somewhere in the past, thankfully Ian had a spare that he donated a few months ago, along with the front hubs he removed when doing his dropped spindle rebuild.

Note the buckled metal and displaced end cap.

This was just as it was unbolted from the truck, surprisingly it tracked just fine and you could not feel anything untoward when driving at motorway speeds.

When we removed to upper cross arms, the passenger side had the same 3 shims per fixing, but the drivers side had double up front and one extra on the rear mounting.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psyiyya5h0.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pst2ygxn4w.jpg

Also realised the brakes were not good, so new parts will be bought when in the USA during October, best to replace these parts, than to paint and doll the truck up, and then putting it sideways into a Honda or some builders van at speed because the brakes failed.

Where does the water come from?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjpufajq1.jpg

Previously ignored them, but my front hubs (possibly the rears too) have these springs wound around them.

Any idea why they are there, and can I remove them without expecting a blow up?

I want to remove them as they seem to serve no purpose, so that I can clean up and paint the hubs.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps6u3z0bqg.jpg

Thanks again as always for your help and knowledge.

At this point I needed a strong coffee.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfyjeh9dg.jpg

Martin did not need to convince me very much to drop the front cross member, so that was a quick 7 bolts if I recall correctly.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psm6wrdybz.jpg

Of course with the front subframe removed, I can clean it up better and paint it up properly. Also under the frame and unfolded the cab.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0nxfv6fz.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshwpuve2e.jpg

One of those tools you rarely use, came to its own today...... Punching and marking certain parts that will be cleaned and painted so that reassembly will be a bit easier.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psw01lymoc.jpg

Wishbone stripping prior to cleanup.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psriglfm8r.jpg

Truck as I left it tonight......

No Problem with helping . I am just glad you took my advice , and stripped down the front brakes , as it would have been a shame to put it back together and then have the brakes fail. I think helping each other also helps with motivation .
