pulled motor and trans (454-th400) out of downer 78 suburban, also pulled out fuel tank and outside mirrors. Was going to just pull it and stick it into the 65 1 ton camper, but soft plug above starter is starting to leak and rear main seal leaking. So decided to pull heads and replace all gaskets, seals and check out. Cam &lifters look good , cylinders and brgs look good, timing chain not so much! So gasket set, soft plugs, timing set, flywheel, and harmonic balancer ordered. will try to remember to take picks of assembly, forgot to take picks of removal and tear down.

Re-adjusted my rocker arms and put a new valve cover gasket today. Discovered a slightly bent pushrod....far from scary and a possibility of a blown head gasket. Still running strong though! Like a chevy does so well!:chevy::sumo:

Posting up on behalf of Martin my mate who cannot be bothered with posting, as he is too busy building :mm::mm::mm::mm::mm:

His step sons twist and go scooter was stolen at work on Thursday evening at work, literally behind the filling station building where he works.

So his manager gave him three days "off" to find another mode of transport, because he lives about 20 miles from where he works.

This left martin holding the an, as he knows a bit and has the truck, his tow car that we used a few weeks ago to fetch the V8 engine and gearbox with is not well at the moment...... so the Chevy was put into service, doing about 200 miles on Saturday to go look at and ultimately buy another 125cc learner sized bike for Mikey.

Little bike looks minute on the back, so hopefully the V-Rod will fill the space better when the truck is done.

I had a couple hours available today, so I swung by the shop and deleted the factory firewall holes for the engine harness, oil pressure line, and headlight/horn harness, along with a few other small holes (six holes total thus far). The engine harness and headlight/horn wiring will be relocated so that the wiring is hidden from view.

Martin had a tyre de-laminate last week, lost most of its tread.

Then he got lucky on Ebay and bought two 1 inch white walls, almost new for £80,00 fitted....... now that is called making your own luck.

Nice idea on getting rid of the firewall holes and hiding the wiring harness, have done a lot of that on builds and most customers are so happy with how clean it looks and don't exactly know what I did, but like the underhood a lot better. I usually don't tell them either.

Traded $2,000 labour on a TJ Jeep lift and engine mods for a 99 S10 ZR2 4x4 and did a quick going over on it and a few mods of parts I had saved then sold it for $2,800 cash to pay for my 40" Mud grapplers I ordered 2 weeks ago for my truck, have to do the barter system to keep the wife happy these days now that my twins are graduating this fall and leaving for school will be a bit low on cash. Next Mods will have to be thrifty.:lol:

What did I do to my truck today?.....Drove it! Just like every other day-the 'ol '65 daily driver is just that.
Been gone a while, re couping from surgery on my hand and the Mrs getting a 2nd total hip replacement this year(now has a matched set of shiny new ones, LOL)

Did do a dual reservoir master cylinder upgrade and all new brake lines and hoses. Kept with the drum brakes. Had to opt out to the recommended ECM that Painless suggests for a Camaro. Mine was from the '91 Olds donor and wanted to keep setting an "intake air temp low" DTC(of which there was no sensor or harness for) Check engine light off all the time now, running great and getting and average 15 MPG, but that is all stop and go, in town only driving. Highway numbers get closer to 19 mpg,but lockup on the TH350C not always engaging. Switching to computer controlled 700R4 soon.

This is a bit of a cross over reply.

I bought a 210 liter compressor from a mate for £100.00 a while ago, but the thing is £&%$$%£ Heavy.

So I decided to add some wheels.

Original plan was to buy four with single bolt fixing......

But then I said to Mickey next door that a shopping trolley would work well.

He then got me a broken bakers trolley from a skip at a job he was on.

So the trolley was the Tip Treasure.

Was going to engineer and drill holes, recess the heads etc, to recycle the allen head screws and nuts, but decided it was a PITA not worth pursuing. So welded the holes onto the plates and tacked the corners and edges.

Went out for the afternoon, getting home around 16.00 and then back to the garage.

It was already getting dark, but then who needs light when you weld??

I used the small jack to lift the tank to the right height and a couple of magnets to hold the wheels in place.

Today I took pictures of the truck and whored it up on this forum. Yesterday installed rear trac bar, lowering blocks and new u bolts.

Opinions and advice sought please.

When I bought the truck, I knew it would need a complete resto and repaint to get it looking the way I want it to be.

I originally had a colour change in mind to a traditional mint green and white combo, or a real farmer brown green colour with off white detailing. But within a week of buying the truck, I knew it would stay the "in your face" red that it had been painted 10 years ago before leaving California.

I also knew it had some rust, and that is was very little for a 47 year old vehicle.

However, I was surprised at the rust when I started looking around under the truck.

There are a few holes that will need new metal welded in after surgery, and then some dents and scrapes to fix. All of these I am prepared to give a go, however, I will be buying and importing some steel patch panels.

I am happy to hear from anyone who has experience in using the panels that are available in the market from the likes of LMC, Top Banana and others, which are best for quality and fit.

Below are a few pics of my fenders and also the front, bottom corners of both doors.

Passenger door underside. The fender on this side seems fairly intact, but I may just bite the bullet and replace that whole side while on the metal work and paint.

Driver side fender corner...... this is bad, it is loose, and the inner support is rotten as well.
I suspect you could pull the whole bottom off without much effort.

Inside view...... made me want to cry. I will get the whole support for this side, rather than patching it up. The passenger side seems totally solid.

As mentioned above, please do add any comments and advice you may have for me regarding repairing the rust.
The trucks sills and cab corners are completely solid, and there are small bits of rust on the inner fenders just behind the grille and front support.

The other thing I looked at today was the placement of the rev counter my buddy Tim gave me in August.

I did not want to fit it till the truck was painted, but realized that placing it and wiring it up will not stop me from the paint and prep. I plan on going for a satin black dash, or satin black and red combo.

My question is this......

Where do most people place rev counters?

Sensible, practical, visible etc.....

Here is mine, just held in place or placed in position to get and idea.

WRONG! I met grizz on here, and being the jack-of-all trades that he is--wood, vans, campers, house-construction, cars, hvac, trucks, just to name a few--I'd bet he's already got a space-saver spare hidden on that comp. somewhere! (Good luck, grizz, with your new truck.)

Grizz, you'll find a LOT of recommendations for Top Banana when it comes to patch panels here on these forums. I've installed a bunch of their panels on the '65 C10 I'm working on, and I'm happy with the panels I received.

As for the tach, personally, I'd get a smaller one with a more appropriate range. Wherever you put it, it would be less obstructive to your view, and with a smaller range, it will be easier to read.

I have a small trenching tool (folding spade) that I would use to lift up the side that needed a spare fitted..... that's how I got the jack in last night. ;)
