i got a question about this too! i get the 3" cut between the two bolts, but off the bottom of what do you cut for the 2" cut??

You'll have to cut the shaft down by the rag joint, sleeve it and weld it back together. I'm going the rack and pinion route so I'll have much more work when I get to it.

thanks for the info., i started to stare at your pictures more and realized you have to cut the shaft 3" and notch the cover plate, so it can be bolted up under the dash! i'm blonde and had a moment, lol!! i started cutting mine, should have it welded back together this weekend, and painted!!

Correct. You do have to cut both. The cover is basically a trim piece and just needs to be notched so it will fit back on after the shaft has been shortened. Good Luck!

Ha. I'm trying to motivate myself with what little progress I'm making. Waiting for the snowball effect.

When I raised up the bed floor the tubs went with it. This mod was to compensate for that. The strips that are on the table were what I cut out of the side where the fender use to bolt to the bed. There's only two inches to cut out before I got to the part in the middle of the bed that bends at a 90 degree angle. I raised the bed floor up 3" so I had to put a 1" strip in the tub to lower down the flange to get under that 90 bend. I still have to finish the welding and plug the old mounting holes. Does that make any sense at all?

I'm starting to see that getting a tight fit helps with good looking welds. Can you take your tires off with the bed on?

shrunken66stroker 04-07-2012 03:13 AM

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.

Tight fit is key, especially with tig. My wheels will barely come of when the bed is on. I still have to roll the lip of the fender under. That should make it easier.

Thanks. I haven't had a lot of time but I'm trying to finish the bed. I cut the little tabs off the tailgate that the chains hooked to when the gate was down. I rewelded the braces that hold the new gate checks on(or what ever the hell they're called) and plugged the holes in the side of the gate. Now on to filling the holes that are left and evening out the gap between the gate and bedside.

I welded and drilled a tab where the stealth latches seat and made it part of the mount for the gate link assembly.

It's easy work but time consuming. The fab on the bed is close to being done, so it's on to the body work and prime. Then the hood mod.
