Thanks Nut Case

You've got mail, Sir ;)

Thanks you very much everybody!!
I thought it was a nice simple sollution to mount the latches flat.
Glad you all like it ;)

So today I did something completely different.
I striped the white line between the red and the black.
Took me a few hours.....
One more thing off the list!!!

Thanks Doug!

Today I had a few hours, so I put the taillights on.
They are LEDs, I wanted to see how bright they are, and they are bright!!

This is normal taillight, brake/turnlight are not connected yet.

And I sanded the two front fenders, almost ready for primer and paint!

Kees !!!! Dude you are knocking it OUT!!!! everything is looking great man.

Those latches are killer! I used the MAR-K stuff but wish I had done something like yours.

TIP: (from MAR-K) When you drill your hole for the tip to go into the fender channel make it big enough for a rubber grommet to fit. This will keep the pin from RATTLING in the hole when your are driving down the road.....

Cant wait to see it on WHEELS and on the ground! ;)

I looked at the Mar-K stuff also and came to the conclusion I could make it myself :metal:
I even got grommets :lol::lol:
Wheels are now 5 inch off the ground, give me a month.....

It sure is productive this week ;)
All parts are now black.

I put the tailgate in and mounted the homemade roll pan, it looks good :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dn...z=w702-h935-no

Maybe I should paint the "Chevrolet" letters red with a white outline?
What would you do??

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/P0...=w1247-h935-no

Most of the wiring is also in, just have to find a diagram to make the wiper switch work with the wiper motor via this relay...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sI...l=w697-h935-no

If this will work I have High Speed, Low Speed and Park/off.
Park/off didn't work with a 3-way switch...

I found a diagram, I think this is what I can use...
We'll see tommorow ;)

Kees

Out standing. Just a thought maybe some bright gold pin stripping or do the tailgate in bright gold instead of white.

Gold would make it really pop as well as white.

I'm jealous.

Thank you Sir!!

I'm not a fan of gold, so I won't go with your option ;)
Think of doing what I was planning, red and white, just as the rest of the striping.

Yesterday was a "fun" day, reaching a milestone!
My buddy Niels was over to help start the truck.
After resetting the distributer a few times...we get it at finally at the right timing.
Started really good and sounds awesome with the new exhaust.
At first I found it a bit loud, but after setting the timing right, it sounds as it suppost to be :metal:

So letting it run a few minutes, checking for leaks, we found some small leaks to take care of, nothing special.
Then all of a sudden, hell broke loose :ack:
I was standing at the left side, Niels at the right side of the engine.
The upper waterhose came loose with such a force, never saw that coming.
I stood in the line of fire, getting all the really hot water over my arm and belly... Niels got just a few drops fortunatly!
Man that was HOT!!
So to the tap and cool some off.
Really carefully took out my shirt, the damage was little I thought, my forearm was more damaged.

After cooling we wrenched a bit further, cleaned the truck a bit and mounted the hood. But after two hours or so, the pain wasn't funny anymore, so we quit for the day.

After comming home, the damge to my arm was getting more and more visible, talking to my sister in law, who works in a hopital at plastic surgery unit, thus seen a lot of these wounds, told me not to work at the truck for some time, to get bacterias out the wounds. My arm is badly burned, second degree wounds, skin hangs loose, a lot of blisters on my arm and belly...there goes my Flame Tattoo
Well, today is a lot better then yesterday, luckily almost no pain!!

I think the stainless steel hoseclamp on top was defective. Now I don't trust those SS clamps anymore, I bought all new ones this morning...

After the explosion:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BK...T=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1l...Z=w697-h935-no

Niels and I put the hood on, so I can build further on the front:
(sorry for the bad pic)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7A...=w1247-h935-no

So, when I ready to rumble again, you see the updates here :metal:
Niels filmed a bit of the start up, will see if I can upload that.

Niels, THANKS for your help buddy!! (Niels is lurkin here too ;))

Sorry about your burns. Hope you heal up quickly.
Hard to see if there is a lip on the pipe.
If there is no lip on the pipe going into the rubber hose it may not be a bad clamp.

Wow Sorry to hear of your burns, hope you are doing ok. It's too bad when you where on such a high with getting it running then that happened. Take care. Congrats on the start btw.

Damn Kees!!! sorry to hear that, hope you heel up quick.
I 2nd that, I did notice no lip on the upper tube going into the rubber connector
that's your colporate!!

Wow Kees, so sorry to hear about the burns. Here is to a quick healing! Saw you and your buddy getting it going on FB.

Our hobby is expensive, physically demanding and as we see here potentially dangerous. And I hope to never give it up.

Jesus Kees, be really careful.. Burns get infected very easily and then you're in more trouble. Hope you get wel soon! I've never heard of a hoseclamp failing in that way

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

So sorry to hear this Buddy! its suppose to be ALL JOY at this time..... -- take care of it and keep it covered and CLEAN!

the pipe needs a lip, cut a piece of the pipe (about an 1/8") off the end or if you have more of it - use that.

slit it so it fits over the end of the pipe then weld it into place about an 1/2" back of the end of the pipe. The hose clamp has to be behind the lip to hold it from slipping out. Should have one on each end....

good luck my friend! ;)

RockinKees 05-27-2016 05:22 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Update again!!

I want to thank everybody who's wishing me well!!
I'll survive ;)

I've inspected the whole lot, there is little to none lip on the pipes, you're absolutely right in that.
AND, the clamp was indeed a faulty one, so 2 points for not having a normal lip and 1 point for a faulty clamp.
Sooner or later the waterhose had to come loose.
This, my friends, was a painfull lesson learned!!!
I hope some will learn from my mistake!

Now I have all new clamps, I did not trust the "nice" stainless steel ones again...
And I listened to my great friend PTC, I welded a new, big lip on the pipes, only I have not much room, so I did it this way:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/aR...s=w664-h891-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3r...r=w664-h891-no

The rubber hose went over it with a little force, the new clamps are sitting good and have their room.
I'm confident with it now.

Also, my buddy Niels was with me Thursday evening, we put in the backglass.
Little by little I get things of the list...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e8...=w1188-h891-no

In the hunt for small parts I need for the vent widows I drove by a friends business, he has a custom paint shop in out town, and this stood at his doorway:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/z_...=w1188-h891-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0k...=w1188-h891-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MF...=w1188-h891-no

You don't normally see things like this in our neighbourhood....:metal:
