For those how have never seen a '64 Ford F 750 before or at least in not in this condition. Not mine, great running with air. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Ford-O....c100667.m2042

Impressive Ford.

Not my brand but a fine example of a nice 750.

Sometimes condition over make is in order. I would have liked to see an original 391 with 4BBL Holley under the hood ( those things are brutes ) and a little less gingerbread ( wheel simulators, rear fenders and tool box ) but, like you said Bill, it is impressive in this day and age to see this model ( not as common as the 2ton F 600) in turn key condition. Before 1966, Ford truck engine valve covers were painted all different colors, black, white, silver, gold and red, a few that I'm aware of.

I lived on a farm that had a '66 F650 flatbed I liked to drive. Hauled hay mostly.

I just searched and only got the late model trucks. But I did find this slightly newer MD Ford. I'm not a fan of large pickups but this one does look kinda neat. I'd like it better with a wrecker rig in the bed

I've worked in a neighborhood where there is a super clean early 90's Dodge with a cummins diesel. Every so often the guy pulls up in a totally cherry 1960 F350 flatbed with a signature Turbo Cummins sound coming from it. Both are VERY nice trucks. I really need to ask him the details.

Had some driveway work done and the contractor who's company has been in business for 50 years showed up still using a '58 Ford 1 ton for dirt and gravel runs. These old heavy duty 1 ton trucks can still can earn their keep and be money makers for local work, just can't do this with a 1/2 ton.

I think you'll like this one. I'm betting this one is the extra heavy 6500 with the 478.

You're right !!

She's a beauty.

A '62 6500 with the Chrome package to boot.

Will have the 478 for sure.

Extra Heavy Front Springs. Never seen one that high.

Thanks for posting it. I noticed that too last night. There is even another picture of the '62 6500 with 2 little kids in the picture. The 2 GMC's in the middle picture are different trucks though, in case someone did not notice. Long time successful business started by their grandfather still in operation today as you have indicated.

Photos are better if you don't pose in front of the most important details. Here is a shot of the emblem and wheel of a 6500 . Emblems would be chrome, not painted, on a Custom. Like Bill eluded to, the 4000 is nowhere near the truck of a 6500 series. More is known about the more common, underpowered 305, but the 478 was the real star of the V6 family.

C10 - C90 Bill 11-26-2020 11:49 AM

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

Good post.

And the write-up delivers every bit of the truth of the 6500 with the 478.

Interesting opportunity to get to drive one.

special-K 11-26-2020 06:24 PM

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

The 305 is better known because they were in the more plentiful light trucks, where they gave great performance. I think the important detail in that picture was the proud owner shown with his truck. I can appreciate seeing who the man was with such great taste in trucks. You can't beat factory pictures for showing the trucks' details off

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

Anyone notice one certain thing about the owner of the Towing business?

He didn't like Spoke Wheels !!

Just about every one his trucks and all of the GMC's have Budds.

Which was usually a West Coast thing, but goes to show that you could order what you wanted back then.

Now that you mention it. Good eye.

Fresh fuel, oil, filters, and batteries it would probably fire up. Not sure I'd trust the rubber though . I saw this last summer while up visiting my mom

A '58 ford in the same weight range as a GMC 6500. Not much plastic and fiberglass on this one.

Some nice looking Ford's there.

My first big truck ride ever was in a '49 Ford F-5 very much like the Green one, 4th picture down in post #1459.

I was only about 9 years old and was in awe.

Love those transmission whines.

Those trucks were bought for serious service. Now it's hard to believe the Big 3 were building real heavy duty lines of trucks. All the brands gone now. Growing up it was GMs hauling GMs, Dodges hauling Dodges, and Fords hauling Fords

NewBayColony 12-29-2020 10:02 AM

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

That's why M&G had Dodges. They hauled for Chrysler. I live in a town where at least 5 guys worked for Anchor Motor Freight and the hauled out of the GM plant in Framingham. Most of their tractors were Chevrolets and the rest were GMC's.

I got to drive the old stuff. U Model Mack with no power steering. You learned very early on that you just did not turn the wheel unless you had some sort of roll going on. Clutches that wore my left knee out, I do have a replacement, and I need hearing aids from the noise especially all those years with the GM 671's. It always surprised me that the people that would spend 10 hours a day would have to drive something that was designed so bad for the operator. The new trucks are a million times better for the health of the driver but they take away some of the skills that we used to have to learn. Learning to drive a triplex, quadbox or even the much easier Road Ranger transmissions to me was fun. I have a friend who owns a trash company and I fill in for his trailer driver from time to time. I enjoy hitting 16 of the 18 gears correctly with a 100000 lb load even though I don't need all of them,

Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

With that Front Bumper on there, it looks like a 6500 to me. But there again, it looks like the hood has a Toro-Flow emblem on it, which would probably mean a 5000. Either way, it's either a '64 or a '65. Strange no Cab Lights, but even though most trucks like that had them, it was still probably an option you needed to put in for. Also, now that I think about it and without looking it up, I believe the "D" in DWA stands for "Diesel".

Also notice the "45,000" on the dump bed. It probably has 11 Fronts and 34 Rears.

Yes, 'D' is diesel, 'W' is tandem rear axles, 'A' is air brakes, but that is only used if the air brakes were not standard on that particular model.

That would add to the proof as not all 5000's had Air Brakes.

Good info, thanks.

Any idea when did FMVSS start mandating cab lights on vehicles over a certain height or a width? I'm pretty surprised that that era truck does not have them.

One of my favorite Dodge photos. Makes you wonder why the other manufactures didn't keep the old cab styling a little longer.

Since no one has answered yet, I'm going to say by or somewhat before 1972. But maybe someone will jump in with the exact year it was implemented.

I don't know exactly either, but I believe '68 may have been first year. Many automobile safety standards went into place in '68, including side marker which were also required at least on light trucks as well. '69 was the first year light trucks had clearance (cab) markers designed into the truck, not just an add-on. I think all dual rear 1t trucks left dealerships with the clearance lamps mounted. Since only 1t light trucks can be registered over 10,000# I assume that requirement was for all commercial trucks.

I'm going back to big Fords for this post
