Re: PO has me PO'd
Jim, you close to driving that thing yet? :)
I'm hoping to fire mine up next weekend. I need to start a thread with all the picures I have taken. I'm glad you got to spend some time with your boys. I only have 1 at home the other 2 are alot futher away and I don't get to see them very often. Doug |

Good luck with the engine start, and yes it is always a good time hanging out with the boys. Be patient, they always seem to drift back home eventually http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip171.jpg seems like the 3/4" fastners work better than the 1/2" ones, just to short to grab! The bottom corners are the worst, no clearance room to swing the fastners up, My idea of using a hook tool to grab the fastner and swing it up was somewhat a success. I only stabbed my finger once, no where near as bad as Levi, that thing had to hurt http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip172.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip173.jpg |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Well had a couple hours to mount up the oil pan, dang PO had the rear passenger side cross threaded...put some grey RTV silicone in the top 4 corners where the block meets the gasket. Had to drop the oil filter to get at one of the oil pan bolts
Much easier job with the DIY4X4 crossmember flanged, no support this time from the top of the motor Once I get the valve covers bolted down, I should be able to add oil and prime the engine thru the dizzy hole. Big improvement from the days of finding plastic chunks from the timing sprocket in the oil pan http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip176.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip175.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip177.jpg |
Re: PO has me PO'd
mmm, shiny and orange..
That timing cover is sweet too! Is there another part of the cover that goes over the cam? |

VORTEC'D with small runners:smoke: and a .464 lift Comp Cam! Heads have dual bolt patterns for the Valve Covers and the Intake
More to follow http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip196.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip197.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip198.jpg |

Looks good Jim!

Re: PO has me PO'd
Thanks Guys, more eye candy, but first FUBAR
Took the head out of the box to paint, got going on the coating and something didn't seem right. It was the machining on the v/c mounting surface!!! The angle was wrong, and to correct it, they remachined it at the proper angle and relief cut half of the v/c mounting hole boss....afreakin'mazing from GMPP! So, my call goes out to Jeg's customer service, not another one in stock, crap! Her supplier is 5 days BO, but she pulls the ace of spades out of the deck and says " SUMMIT has it in stock " I wanted to reach thru the phone and kiss her, yesterday the head arrives Gotta send this girl some flowers |

Good Luck to ya Thank you God for sons, with out Jon, I would have never pulled this one off!! More explanation when I get some timem but atleast you all have pics to look at http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip205.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip206.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip207.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip209.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip210.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip208.jpg |

Looking really good Jim. That engine should purrrrrr.

Re: PO has me PO'd
what's the part numbers on those heads? looks nice

Mike, gotta get back to you on part numbers...congrats on the Masters first attempt on the flange removal was a bandsaw, to get most of the meat off. Then some creative grinding, couldn't find my hub nut removal thingy, so I just used the cutoff wheel. It got into some tight spots, so it worked out. Don't use it without the guard!!! Studs had to be chased, junk part that needed extra work! A little anti-seize, a coat of Eastwoods Stainless Steel coating and I will be good to go http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip213.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip211.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip212.jpg |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Got an hour or two to work on my fuel line over the weekend
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip214.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip217.jpg IMHO, GMPP got this one wrong, 1/8" gap between intake runners and heads.Intake bolts up, just doesn't cover the intake ports...gotta buy another intake http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip218.jpg |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Looking good Jim.
When are you driving it over? |
Re: PO has me PO'd
That's amazing to me. Is there going to be an intake out there that does cover those gaps?
|
Re: PO has me PO'd
Those heads appear to be the Vortec style bolt pattern with the taller intake ports.

Why they even bothered to drill and tap holes for the early style intake is beyond me Jeg's said they run into this guite a bit |

Man, that engine looks like it belongs in the space shuttle!! Looks good Jim. Sorry the intake isn't going to work. I hope to start driving mine before the summer is over up here. Just gotta get this dang A/C figured out.

If I understand this correctly, they weren't the heads you wanted in the first place but you installed them anyway?? You won't have to worry about lack of low end torque with vortec heads. They only have 170cc intake runners, and with the taller ports they have a better short turn radius. They make gobs of torque. They are actually a much better choice than the standard port heads you initially wanted. |
Re: PO has me PO'd
AHHHHH, now I see. Didn't realize that was one of the differences with the Vortecs. I'm not as amazed now...
I can see your frustration, though. If it were me, I'd probably get a SCREAMING deal from Jegs on the right intake, like their cost plus free shipping. They're going to turn around and get the money back out of GMPP anyway... |

[QUOTE=Firebirdjones;4119502]If I understand this correctly, they weren't the heads you wanted in the first place but you installed them anyway??
---------------- At the time I installed them, I thought they were the heads I ordered, until I realized it, it was to late. My focus was on the poor quality of the machining, and I just forgot to check the details You won't have to worry about lack of low end torque with vortec heads. They only have 170cc intake runners, and with the taller ports they have a better short turn radius. They make gobs of torque. They are actually a much better choice than the standard port heads you initially wanted. ----------------- THAT makes me feel better, hope it holds true |

Talked to them today, even had a case started, the smmmmaaaalllll print states that you must use a extended runner intake manifold (by .200") to run Vortec heads, seems that even though the early style intake will bolt up, w/o the extended runner design there will be a gap My apologies to GMPP, you were right, I was wrong. Should have read all the printed information on the page, as it states to use a specific intake |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Bummer!

Re: PO has me PO'd
back to where I was a month ago...got to do some engine wiring for the engine temp. and fan wires, still working on the electric choke
March was kind enough to send me the bolt and spacer for the alt. at no charge w/ shipping since I lost it in the workshop, well, its not lost just put it in a safe place so I wouldn't misplace it http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip221.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip222.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...hinTrip223.jpg |
