Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Teamwork..... Well, working together does make a huge difference.
Chassis prep went off while we sorted online info. Then I pressure cleaned the top and bottom of the chassis, Martin got his new compressor up to pressure and used that to blow all the excess water out of every crease, crevice and joint. While he continued with that I went into the carport and pressure cleaned all vertical and horizontal surfaces, now that space is ready to paint the chassis in as well. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psr6mojauw.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0vmiruv6.jpg After all the blowing, spraying etc we carried the chassis back into the carport, with Martin's Amanda moving the chassis stands for us. Next up we set it all even higher so painting will be easier. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps96otmuvk.jpg While we were busy here, Nicola had gone for a walk on the farm and sent me this envy provoking photo. I think she wins on the best way to spend a few hours after work scale today. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pszk0l1fq7.jpg There you go then.......... Counting down now. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Aaaahhhh yes Don.
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstuyncbip.jpg On the way home I popped into my secret yard. I wanted to see if the guys possibly had some old metal gallon petrol cans for a friend who wants a few for his garage as decoration. No luck, buggerrr. But while I was there these were brought to my attention..... Would I be interested? Thanks to modern technology, a photo texted to Nicola and an offer to purchase the Silver Cross pram (go Google them) she now is the proud owner of the burgundy unit (which I will have to restore. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfrjkmayy.jpg While scavenging around the yard I also found this large jack for mate Martin, at £5.00 it would be rude to say no thank you. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psiegavbpc.jpg Lastly, I got a 20 litre plastic drum from the guys to use when I make my dust extractor catchment drum for the sand blaster. I also got these pieces for nowt, they will be part of some Steam Punk piece I will be making in the future. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psenohkkq8.jpg Tomorrow it is currency exchange first thing, then off to press the lower ball joints into the wishbones. That will a great step forward as it puts the reassembly one step closer too. In the afternoon it will be the rear half of the chassis and suspension to be cleaned up and hopefully painted. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Another weekend that seems to have played into my hands........
Nicola wanted to go check up on her son at university, carry in food, soap powder, books and also see her daughter. Unfortunately, at age 20 and 24 the kids have no interest in me or use for me........ It does hurt, but hey, they have a good father and my wife is a great mother, so I should not take it personally I guess. So today I had an early appointment with mate Martin to go to Maidstone to see if we cold get the ball joints pressed into the lower wishbones at one of his dealers, but alas, no luck. Then down to The Money Shop to get some pounds changed to dollars, including a guaranteed fixed price buyback for £4.00 From there back to his place to drop him off, move his chassis about. Then home to get started on cleaning up the rear half of the chassis and diff etc. but only after coffee and a sandwich as it is now lunchtime. As I made the coffee, I heard a motorbike pull up outside and it ends up being my buddy Kevin who came over to show off his new R1200GSA So in the end, we went for a ride, he on my bike and me on his, well, now I have serious bike envy. In the end we parked up in Rochestwr and had a coffee and chat, then home. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psk3hl9ncw.jpg Once back home and in my garage clothes I started to clean the rear half of the chassis, but soon realised that I would have to remove the rear mounted tank as well. Found this damage where the breather had been bodged into place with some form of epoxy. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8cqgg3rz.jpg So I emptied the rancid, dirty petrol, after getting a mouthful when siphoning to start off the pipe. Jacked up at an angle, I got pretty much all of it out. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps32t1teta.jpg Dropped it with the jack after undoing the steel strap under it. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2lat5d8v.jpg Then scraped and cleaned the tank, followed by a petrol wash, and then allowed it to dry. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps9yurwlp2.jpg Once dried off, I painted the rust converter as well and shut shop to allow the tank to dry. A lot of rust on the surface. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspewckgf4.jpg Finished here tonight. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuwzxriji.jpg So tomorrow it is back to cleaning up the chassis, then petrol rust converter and possibly paint. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspj8vhsnb.jpg |

Woke at 04.00 Don't we just love getting older. Went to help Martin flip his chassis at 6.30 Bootfair by 08.00 and home by 10.30 to start painting the tank. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psr22aftib.jpg Spent the next six hours till 18.00 under and over the chassis, scraping crud, paint, rust and grinding a few screws off. It gets interesting under the diff with everything lowered. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgv6u98te.jpg Loads of old grease, crud and rust removed with a chisel and sharp knife. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pszmyllxul.jpg Fortunately I have bought a new panhard rod which is waiting for me in Arkansas. The rubber seems gone on this one. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5u1jzqmj.jpg Finally, brush washed the chassis, dice etc with loads of petrol and left it to dry. Did not get time to get the rust converter on, maybe tomorrow evening, followed by paint on Tuesday. How I ended the day. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0a5tdbz4.jpg |

At the weekend I bought this trunk, ideal for a rat rod truck build. Spent an hour cleaning it up for market. Pity I do not have a rat rod that needs a nice trunk like this. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psya60c36d.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psiyigtv1v.jpg I also spent some time on cleaning up the Silver Cross pram for Nicola. Ideally it needs a resto but I have other fish to fry at the moment. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psaaehhr7k.jpg After all of our attempts on Saturday to get the ball joints pressed into the lower wishbones, Martin managed to get them done today. So that's another little job done and one step closer in the reassembly. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psluyvvqsi.jpg |

Thank you Bill, I suspect we will. Along with the face to face time with a load of amazing good guys from this forum in various places. Mike, the trunk is for sale, as is everything in my life, except my integrity. Booked our seats this morning when online booking opened. Until we booked, the seats we wanted, twin row, right at the rear, meaning more space and less people crawling over you, were for sale as a pre-booking option at £43.00 per booking. So by waiting till it opened, I guess we each now have another £43.00 or $65.48 to spend on spares. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8snutst0.jpg Now we can probably say....... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxkclf39i.jpg |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
A Road Trip for the ages.
It may not compare to your bike road trip in Africa but there are a few more truck parts here in the states that you might need. Looking forward to meeting you guys here in Arkansas. Vince |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Typically, I could not leave well alone.
So late afternoon I went and dragged out the truck and used the last of my rust converter on the chassis. I left out the prop shaft and diff, will do them when I get back and get more Vactan. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrvtwvdmc.jpg This will be the last work I do till I get back. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
I know how you feel . I finished packing and went into the carport sanded down the underside , and put another coat on , as its now the other way up after we flipped the chassis over on Sunday

It was nice meeting you at Clem's Saturday! Clem's place was full of so much cool stuff, no way you could see it all lol. I would have liked to stay longer, but I was with my pregnant wife and my brother brought along Leila, their 3 year old. Hopefully next year the truck will be ready for the long ride.
