Looking good! That's sweet you were able to use the stock glass. I'm replacing mine on the 66 as it was scratched and hazed pretty bad. Had to do Crustine the 64 because of a rather large spider crack years ago.

They were stripped, enlarged, and had 3 different size screws holding it down. I got everything aligned how it needed to be and surprisingly five of the existing holes were aligned with the cowl holes. The 2 on the outside were a bit off. I got all of the holes drilled and the nutserts installed. I think it worked well. I'm also ready to assemble the wing windows. I just need one more coat of paint on the frames. The last thing is a big setback for getting on the street, so I decided to get things rolling now. The differential needs serious help so I'm going to rebuild it with an Eaton tru-track limited slip and replace the ring and pinion and whatever else. We are leaving for Oregon in 2 weeks, so I am starting to finalize a few things on a few of the smaller truck projects I've been working on. Yesterday I finished the window cranks. lubed the crank mechanism with lithium grease and put them back in their place with new rivets. I'm going to throw a little paint where needed and they are ready. I'm also trying to get the wing windows back together. I've decided that I'm going to replace the rear diff. with an Eaton limited slip, a new ring and pinion, and everything needed to do the job. I should have done this earlier but I was reluctant to. I've got new dutchman chrome molly axles, new outer bearings, and all new brakes all ready installed. It's not going to happen until we get back but I'm hoping to get all set up. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks and we're having 100+ temps to go with that.

Well, I had hoped to have Sanity on the road by now but my rear differential woes is the set back. Everything that I need to do yet will not keep from getting inspection and licensing.
We are leaving for our annual trip to Oregon to visit family and friends in a week so I am getting things ready for shutdown for about 6 weeks. No more work on Sanity until August. It's a disappointment to not get done but it' getting too damn hot to get much done right now. I'll be looking in to keep up with all that's going on. |

Hey, I just thought I'd post a little update. We are still in Portland, Or. having a great time with family and friends. Next week we are going out to the Oregon coast. We'll spend about a week out there and then start the long trek back to Tucson. I'm ready to get back to work on Sanity.

Hey there. We've been home for about a week and we've finally got everything put away from the trip. We've been getting hit pretty good right now with the monsoon rains. I'm finally getting ready to get back to work on Sanity. The diff. is the first thing that has to be done before driving, so I ordered everything I need to convert to an Eaton limited slip with a new ring and pinion (keeping the 3:73 ratio) and all the parts to replace everything needed. I already have new Dutchman chrome/moly axles and new outer bearings. The parts will be here tomorrow. That's 2 days free shipping. I love Summit's customer service.
So that's what I'll be doing in between the heat and the monsoon rains. At least I bought a 30" fan to help. |

I started taking apart the rear diff. yesterday afternoon and my parts arrived for the rebuild. This thing is toast. It's a good thing I hadn't put any torque on it because it would have blown up. Today I hope to finish the disassembly, get everything cleaned up and I'll probably start the rebuild tomorrow. The afternoons are just too hot to work. A lot of metal ground up.

Good catch. Those rearends can do a lot of damage when they come unglued. Welcome home and stay cool. I don't ever remember a summer this hot. The temps are higher for you but the humidity is killing us. Without our fans, we would have melted.

Progress is looking good. I looked for details on what tank you used, but there are a lot of posts to go through! I learned it is a 16gal unit, but not sure what the OE application was for. Look like a mid 60's mustang tank. What tank is it exactly? Looks like it might be a good option for my '65.

So, yesterday I got the rear bearing installed on the pinion gear shaft. I heated the bearing in a toaster oven for about an hour on convection at 450 deg. I also decided to put the shaft in the freezer. I put the spacers on and the bearing slid on like hot butter. then installed the gear into place with the crush sleeve, outer bearing, rear seal, and the yoke. then the washer and nut. I tightened the assembly as tight as I could and now I'm ready to torque everything down but I forgot to pick up the tool I need to hold the assembly while I torque things down to spec. I need to get around 150 lbs torque or more to set the 20-25 in/lb of resistance on the rotation. I will have the part tomorrow so I'm taking the day off from the truck. I've also installed the ring gear and torqued it to spec and the side bearings have been pressed on, just waiting to finish the pinion.

Here is where I'm at as of this morning. Waiting on tool delivery today. We're in for some serious rain for the next couple of days so I'm hoping it doesn't slow me down. I'd really like to button up this project asap.

OK Sanity's Eaton Tru-trac project is done. I got the pinion torqued to spec, the Eaton installed and shimmed to spec, the axles installed, and the brake drums and wheels put on. I got Sanity off of the jack stands and got it started. So I backed it out of the shop and drove it around my yard a bit and it seems to be working great. Sanity will get a real test when I get the front end alignment done. I am so happy things worked out and I can put rear differential rebuild on my "things I've for the first time on this build" list.
But right now I'm on my way to Vegas for a week to party down and listen to some great music at the Big Blues Bender Festival which is for the most part all indoors. We're leaving in the morning. The drive is about 7 hours. I just hope we don't get in any monsoon rains on the way. |

Hey all. I'm back from Vegas and ready to get back to Sanity. The rear diff is done, and I did a little run around the driveway and it seems to be working great. I'm basically ready to get the front-end alignment done and I can start driving the truck. A few small things to do before inspection and licensing but that won't take long.

Glad the coast trip was fun and ya beat the smoke. It's been badly smokey here now from the fires. You'll like that posi unit. I had a power lock unit in my dodge cummins and that sucker would lock no matter how much torque ya shoved on it.
