Dude....

Every time I come to this thread I learn something....You have a great eye for detail, and some mad skills.

If you're going to take this project on make sure you have plenty of wire in your welder, gas, flap disks, and patience. It took almost two full days but it's well worth it.

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.

Yeah, after making templates, cutting, forming the pieces, it's basically two stitch welds all the way around the top of the cap. Then grinding and more grinding. Looks nice though.

16 or 18 gauge will work. All in all it took about 9 hrs.

I had a new 10lb spool on there and didn't run out but there probably isn't much left.

I made an engine hoist plate today out of 1/4". I'm going to have to get new engine mounts, because I'm going to buy the NoLimit rack and pinion conversion and in order for it to work I have to mount the engine in the rear holes. Once I get the mounts and rack worked out I can figure the headers out and make sure everything has clearance.

Both sides of the rear come off at the same time and are connected with the cross sill. I used a piece of angle I had and bolted it where the tail gate chains go. I also braced it in the center the same way. When I put the tailgate back on the gaps and alignment were perfect... or as good as they were before.

Shrunken66stroker,

Great thread, apologize in advance if my question is answered some where in your build thread....I too have a long bed, just panels and rear end cut off, and want to know what is the exact length in front and back of wheel well? Basically want to have someone weld it up into shorty....ANy info would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

I cut 12" out of the frame and bed infront of the wheel and 8" out off of the end of the frame and bed behind the wheels. I believe the wheel base of a stock short bed is 115" and the wheel base of a long bed is 127". If you want I'll take a picture of where I cut the frame under the cab. If you want specific measurements I'll be happy to get them for you.

I cut the old trans member out today. I should have done it long ago but didn't know where this project would end up so I left it. No need for it now.

I stabbed the engine and trans back in to figure out the engine mounts. I'm going to a 4x4 shop tomorrow to see if they'll bend me a couple 1 1/2" chromoly 90's so I can fab them up myself. After I get the mounts worked out I'll get to the drive shaft, rack and pinion headers and fire wall.

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.

I was going to make my own mounts also. Looks easy enough. ;)
