Tuned up the 68 anniversary truck. Was going to get the carb rebuilt but noticed that the gasket to the manifold failed . Replaced it and the plugs truck sounds nice

Not to my drivers. But I removed and sold three fenders a steering collum and two doors from 73 thru 79 chevy trucks and sold them. That's the last of the real good front fenders We had. Still have some good 80 thru 86 left.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Performed a little work on my carb - did a vacuum check and installed the correct step up springs for it (they had not been optimized since I rebuild and got timing dialed in). Engine runs great, and is much more fun to drive. Met friends at a local cruise night and braved the rain to get a nice drive in.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Pulled the carburator on the 68 anniversary to send it out for rebuilding. Found the base gasket was bad and had been for a while as there was heavy rust on the manifold around the front ports . New gaskets and plugs truck sounds great. Still going to get it rebuilt but now it can wait till winter.

Been working on the raised bed lately. Yesterday I was able to build out the battery mount area on each side as well as install a bear claw latch for the floor.

Not what I did today but the most recent. Jim (aka Boog) has seen this photo already. Got the front end all back together minus brake hardware and could not resist slipping the wheels on for a quick look. The wheels will be powder coated and thinking about going one shade towards gray instead of the factory silver.

Theoretically, once I get brakes, wheels/tires and a front end alignment this truck would be road worthy. A ton left to do but I could then drive it to the exhaust shop instead of trailering.

This photo made me notice the dent behind the passengers side door. Although it may sound funny on a truck that looks like this I have since worked that out with a hammer and dolly.

Awesome progress. It looks like a super clean truck to me. I would be proud to drive it! Are you going to run new Fender and grill emblems? I have my old ones that I could send to you if you want, as I will be using trim parts emblems on mine.

Thanks, KMC. Got a little rust repair in the floors I want to do over the winter and will tackle the other stuff later on when I jump into actual finish work. I'm planning on running either the fender and grill emblem I currently have or getting others that might be a bit better. Figure new ones would shine like a diamond in a goats rear end for now. The roughest of mine are the custom ones on the doors.

Been fun for the first 16 months of ownership. I'd like to have it road worthy by spring. I know it will not have a complete bed yet but for the most part drivable. Not too shabby given it sat for 12 years or so. At some point I've got to make up my mind on keeping the 283 or moving to something else. At that point I'll go from 3OT to automatic.

Borrowed a dealer plate from a friend . Drove the 68 anniversary about 15 miles to and from the hardware store. Drove nice stop well but the tires made the truck a little bumpy. Bad flat spots and the rear are bias mud and the fronts are radial. Not good

Finished the hood and got it installed. The hood was in bad shape before I tackled it and I made it worse but pressed on. One corner was bashed in and poorly repaired with lots of mud...that repair went ok. But, the other corner had lots of body filler and some high spots. I did a little hammer and dolly work trying to knock the high spots down only to create oil can issues. I ended up chasing the oil canning from front to back of hood. Of course, this took the curvature out of the panel...sooooo, what is one to do but slice the hood from front to back and weld it back together. That got rid of the oil can, but resulted in more body filler than I started with. But, at least it is less than 1/4" thick anywhere. I got stubborn and would not let the hood beat me especially since new hoods are at least $600 to my door and then would have to be "fit". Ugh!

Oh, I also put the curvature back into the hood spine...that operation went flawless and was rather easy.

Before: Template shows where corner should have been
https://i.imgur.com/ckeTS1X.jpg

During: Slice was necessary to get metal back out where it belonged.
https://i.imgur.com/qmyUUXx.jpg

After: Looks good, don't tell anyone what lurks underneath. i feel like a mud sculptor. Hood is not latched closed yet...still need to adjust.

I tried ordering a windshield from Summit, but they were backordered for two months out, so I bought one locally. Paid $140 for it. I'm a little annoyed that it is made in China, but that's the way it goes these days. At least it has a nice green tint.

Replaced the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Had to contend with a snapped off bolt the PO left for me. Bought a right angle drill from Harbor Freight to access the hole because it was right above the cross member. Hammered a Torx bit into it and fortunately it unscrewed. I felt like I won the lottery when that happened. The PO also used RTV on the entire rear main seal, so I had to make a scraper to very carefully clean out the passageway above the crank.

It sure was a lot of work. I'm not sure I did anything unique on this repair. I followed various pieces of guidance I found from searching the forum. I used pieces of wood to support the hood while the hinge was removed. I removed the inner fender (I had already removed it to do some rust repair and paint). I had a hard time separating the heater box from the firewall because the previous owner had glued it on there with an excessive amount of RTV silicone. I purchased a copper/brass heater from npdlink.com based on lots of comments about the aluminum cores not fitting. I purchased a heater box seal set from GMC Paul's and glued the round seal and air box seal to the air box with weatherstrip adhesive.

I got lucky with mine. The truck was all apart when I got it and had 3 cores and housings
in the boxes. One tested good and was an easy install with the whole front end off the truck. I hope I never have to go back in there.

Drivers side kick my butt today . I’m used to having the passenger side worse than the drivers it this was a farm truck. So I guess all the slop ended up there. Made all the patches myself most likely would have been harder with aftermarkets also put two coats of pour 15 on the passenger side.
